The Carrier (1988)
Not for cat lovers!
This is probably the best really bad movie you probably will never see. The plot centers around a sensitive kid (Jake)in a small town full of brainless twits (comically stereotyped, yes, but barely, growing up as a sensitive kid in a small town myself) who unwittingly contracts a deadly disease that transfers itself to whatever he touches. When other people come into contact with these objects, they disintegrate and are promptly assimilated. Jake seems to be the only guy it doesn't affect.
Scenes to watch for: *the tree scene... during sex, girl touches affected tree with shocking results *the church cat scene... "Touch the wall, Jake!" *and the Hefty bag scenes... the bad guys in leaf bags, the good guys in kitchen bags, just so ya can keep track of who is whom!
Themes: *yeah, the AIDS theme, but it just makes it even hokier *the twisted christ-figure theme: too loud to be ignored
If you ever get the chance to watch this movie, it is definitely an experience: up there with Xtro and Liquid Sky! If you ever find a copy you want to sell, please do not hesitate to let me know.
Night of the Demons (1988)
This cheese is some scary Limburger!
Tenney must have taken notes and memorized the Evil Dead movies because he comes out of the box with a scary high camp bit of cinema. I rented this one expecting to laugh, or scorn... but ended up genuinely horrified. Night of the Demons appeals on all fronts... ;) As a woman of sound mind and character, I am not ashamed of admitting to a bunch of strangers that this piece of shlock scared the livin' bejaysus out of me.
Lemora: A Child's Tale of the Supernatural (1973)
Dreamlike, aesthetic, beautiful...
I saw this movie late one night; I must have been 10 or 11. What I remember most was the song of the nightbirds in the nocturnal outdoor scenes, and how I would hear the same song as I laid in my bed at night in East Texas. To my young and overly active imagination, this could only mean Lemora was in my neck of the woods, and because of this I knew for sure I was on her list of little girls to take away to experience the wonders of the night. A striking and strange movie, with one of the most captivating vampiresses on film. If you ever wanted a vampire for a mommy, this one's for you!
The Creeping Flesh (1973)
All star late night cast, with German shadow-work!
This movie is oh-so-very on my list of bizarre must-sees. Captivated by ads for late night viewing on our local Fox station circa 1980 (I was nine then), I got permission from my folks to stay up and watch it. I couldn't sleep for weeks! The skeleton is absolutely horrifying to begin with... What else could it be but pure evil? Then the thing gets a drop of water here, then there -- and next thing you know you have a cloaked YUCK-THING out to "get" folks... eewww. Shadow work reminiscent of Nosferatu really works for this movie. You just *know* you are next.
Not only must you see it if you're into classic late-night horror, but you must also purchase it for your collection. Up there with "The Strange Case of Dr. Phibes", I have a feeling it won't always be available.
