The Rules of Attraction (2002)
=/
I would in no way say this was an excellent movie.
However, i was surprised to see the reactions of people indicating that it was one of the worst movies ever.
Most of these reasons for people hating it is that they comment it was too unrealistic or the lives were way too depressing - it was as if the movie was made to show how sorry humans are.
I think to an extent, a lot of people hate it because it does depict some aspects of reality, even though it may not be common reality. Yet with satire, i believe the story has to be taken to a certain extremity and maybe 'RUles of Attraction' just overdid it.
For the people who hated it so much for its unrealistic aspects, please reconsider how unrealistic it actually is. It is very morbid, I'd agree. And almost nobody i know lives like this...but that's because I'm an American. In such places like third world countries, this IS how bad their lives are, maybe even an underestimate.
In Asia, kids are beaten by their teachers frequently and a lot of times for no reason. There is no question that many teachers take advantage of their students.
And students raping other students is certainly not unheard of (esp. while the victim is passed out drunk). Suicide is a common atrocity among teens and it is very f***ed up sometimes how we treat people, especially when it comes to relationships.
I would just like to bring to attention that I thought it wasn't stretched or over profane. Simply, the obscenities took place all tied in together. And that ALL of it was like this, made it distateful to audiences.
In recognition, it did have some nice camerawork.

Chingoo (2001)
Truths
If there were a movie out that resembled my story style, it would be this one. I guess to that credit, i gave it some unfair bias =)
The elements of the story are like most of mine: Good setup and character development at beginning Wanes a bit in the middle Awesome End Underlying message trying to be conveyed
This is a beautifully told story and the fact that's its based upon the director's true life makes it better.
My only complaint is the lack of development on the shrimpy character. THe movie starts out displaying the FOUR friendships and develops on that really well. Yet near the middle of the movie, the focus seems to be on the two gangsters and the narrator. It may be b/c that's how it was in reality, but the fourth character, I thought, needed to given more of the story, at least fictional roles just for balancing purposes.
Other than a few carping details, I loved the film.
The end owns and the quote from the beginning is quite relevant. The whole story displays LIFE and has reinforced what i believe life accounts - Memories. It is a series of memories and a series of moments that truly touches the heart and will perhaps make you realize memories of your own and how important and effective they are.

Bringing Down the House (2003)
Not right, but you can't blame anyone because comedy rarely is
Bringing Down the House was not dissappointing to me. Most people should know by now just from the previews what comedy movies are going to be good and which ones are not.
The majority are not. It is completely understandable that this one is no exception.
I do, however, believe that this is an improvement to the mass bull$hit that comes out these days, as far as comedy goes, although you can't compare it to something like punch drunk love or chasing amy.
'Bringing DOwn the House' attempts to address some important issues, whle being a humorous movie simultaneously. There were some shocking scenes concerning slavery (i.e. dinner table), but ultimately, this movie is nothing more than an honest attempt.
However, it sets a trend that a lot of directors should take with them (if they hadn't already been getting it); that a movie can be more than just entertainment. It is a voice of expression. Though I'll agree that they are great old movies, the industry is constantly changing and we need to understand a balance between relaying a message and simply entertaining. ENtertaining is good at certain times, but it is not certainly Oscar-worthy.
Another problem i had with the movie is its irrelevance to time. Slavery has been expanded upon over and over, its often quite redundant. If i really wanted to delve into the slave persona, or the psyche of that time, I'd read Baldwin.
It's not to say that this movie wouldn't be interesting if that were the focus anyway. A little push in the right direction and i'd give a second glance at it.
But for now, the only thing that stands over the rest is Eugene Levy - one of the funniest men ever.
The Hunted (2003)
Mediocrity
'The Hunted' is certainly not a terrible film alone. It is extremely cliche though. This was an average movie for the time...which is not anything to boast.
Not worth a second view.
I felt that the ending was way too rushed. Additionally, Benecio Del Toro's character was integrated way too fast. The movie would've been much better as a character study. The psyche of Del Toro intrigued me at first, but lost a lot and we find out everything about him. They should've kept him vague and then maybe, they could make the film stand out a little.
Overall, the script's very imbalanced. The action is okay. And as far as it being overly-gory...well it fits the character right, but the characters are extremely under-developed anyway, so it wouldn't have taken anything away from the movie, because the movie never had anything to take away in the first place.

Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)
disturbing
Just a comment...
Lord of the Rings (Both), Star Wars, and Indiana Jones are all very high on the top 250...
What ever happened to entertainment AND issues?
Since when did entertainment like 'Huck Finn' (the book) turn to movies like this...and star wars...and lord of the rings...being accredited with such acclaim.
seriously. Society needs plastic surgery.
