Alaska Daily (2022)
Return to Good Newsroom Drama
Tom McCarthy's storytelling skills are so evident here. Real return to issues led journalism drama. Great cast led by Hilary Swank. Gets better every episode. The core story about the murder of indigenous young women builds over the course of the series and is supported by various strands. Issues such as high level and state corruption sit alongside tales of big business looking to take over local loved business and winning cabbages at the fair. I became invested and binged this over a couple of weeks. It reminds me similar shows from the eighties such as Lou Grant, high praise. I look forward to this getting a renewal and seeing more.
Prey (2022)
Predating Predator
A rip-roaring resurrection of the Predator franchise. Neatly transposed into 19th North America. The action scenes are set up and executed brilliantly. Like the first movie the use of special effects seems minimal but always effective. More please.
The Ballad of Lefty Brown (2017)
Pullman Magic
Bill Pullman has become one of my favourite actors. This movie plays to his strengths. His understated performance shines in this classically styled western. A bit of betrayal, a drunk haunted by the loss of his wife, another tainted by the attraction of fame and glory, the "greenhorn" kid. The simple Lucky Brown stands at the moral centre of this story and is beautifully portrayed by Pullman. The visuals are superb and overall I really enjoyed this. Recommended.
Snowfall (2017)
A 1980s Wire
Outstanding, remarkable and unforgettable. John Singleton, RIP, has created a modern Dickensian tale. The tragedy at the heart of the drugs trade in the black communities of the 1980s and the damage it brought upon the families of dealers to users. The only comparable series is The Wire and it holds its own in that illustrious company. This is a series that must be seen.
