The Last Dance (2020)
Great content ruined by nonsensical editing jumping around in time randomly.
The actual content of the documentary is top notch. Great interviews, great footage, very well produced and obviously had a nice budget behind it. However I can not get over the borderline manic editing here jumping around in timelines minute to minute without finishing a previous thought. It feels like it was edited by a child with ADHD.
It is incomprehensible at times. I was so often confused because they kept randomly jumping back and forth in time all over the place. This could have been amazing if they followed a timeline, slowly building up the story of the dynasty over the years till that "last dance" season. Instead I kept finding myself thinking "wait what year are they talking about now?" when they are randomly jumping to some other year than they were talking about a minute ago. All the storylines they tried to tell kept falling apart as they would a minute later randomly rewind to some previous year and basically the build up of whatever story they told are suddenly reversed randomly. I don't understand the crazy high ratings. I feel like it's just basketball fans excited that a well produced, high budget documentary got made about their favorite sport. This is simply one of the worst edited documentaries I've ever seen and a waste of great content.
The Haunting of Bly Manor (2020)
Felt 4 episodes too long, but with a strong ending, pales compared to season 1 overall
Definitely enjoyed season 1 quite a bit more, but the pretty satisfying ending here at least elevated Bly quite a bit for me. Enjoyed the last 2 episodes, especially Dani and Jamie's romance and just overall how the explanation for it all really put a lot of earlier scenes into context well. Just felt like the whole rest of the season could be condensed into 3 episodes or something for a total of 5 and would have been a better pill to swallow overall.
Kind of just meandered aimlessly for too long, felt dragged out with overly repetitive scenes and dialogue, lacked "horror" and spent too much time on Peter + Rebecca who were just unlikable (and not even in a love to hate them villain type way) and I didn't really feel like the actors had good enough chemistry to make their romance feel believable, relatable or "tragic" in the way the writers seemed to want us to view it.
Where as with Hill House I wanted MORE by the end (more background/fleshing out for the house and ghosts), here I wanted less, much less. Hill House got a 10/10 from me and really blew me away as I went in expecting "horror" and got so much more. This season eh more like 7/10 at best, though again I do think the final 2 episodes were really well done and tied everything together well else it'd probably would have been more like 5/10 based on the first half of the season.
The Witch in the Window (2018)
The problem with The Witch in the Window is the witch
First off the positives. I liked the main characters. The father and son had a really wholesome and charming dynamic/rapport. The dialogue was pretty well written and the actors did a pretty good job. Hate to say it but the kids in these movies are often just annoying, poorly acted and detract from the movie, that was not the case here. The drama story was decent and believable enough, although obviously nothing new or groundbreaking and a bit boring at times. Typical divorce/separation story.
My major problem with the movie was the witch. She wasn't scary. All she would do is run at the characters and let out an eyeroll worthy horror movie scream. It was corny, it was lame and it wasn't scary. As a "horror" it failed, imo. I'll still give it a 5 because again, I think the main characters did a quite admirable job.
Good Omens (2019)
Crowley and Aziraphale were amazing, everything else, meh.
Just a decent show for me as someone who didn't read the book. I absolutely loved Crowley and Aziraphale and their relationship. I also quite liked all the other demons and angels. However I didn't like basically every other character and plot point. I found the antichrist himself super boring and his whole plot felt lame. Maybe I'm too tired of annoying chosen one kids saving the world, especially when the acting is nothing impressive and the shows idea of an interesting kid character is to have a kid ranting about the "patriarchy", ugh. Anathema and her boyfriend, don't even remember his name, also just felt pretty meh.
Every scene without the main duo just made me want them back on the screen asap. Basically, I would have enjoyed the show a lot more if the whole series was just what that first half of episode 3 was (flashback). I just wanted to see Crowley and Aziraphale being unlikely best bros for life and getting up to all sorts of hijinks together throughout history while trying to avoid the wrath of the angels and demons. 6/10 for me. Glad others enjoyed it more though.
Bill Nye Saves the World (2017)
Just why Bill Nye?
Gotta be honest, I could not get through a single full episode due to the cringe worthy laugh track "audience", lame attempts at being "hip" and funny, completely pointless celebrity guests (who don't know jack about science) and focus on political/social agendas rather than unbiased actual science. I watched a bunch of several episodes but always had to turn them off in absolute disbelief that a show this awful could be produced under the guise of "science". I should have known just reading the arrogant, ridiculous title what was coming but I must admit I was still caught off guard by the awfulness of this show.
Let me be clear here, I don't even disagree with many of the social/political views being pushed here, but I just think it's pathetic to pretend to be a scientist (Bill Nye isn't even a scientist) and pretend this is a "science" show and then just use it as a platform to push your personal social/political views without much actual science being presented here. The "panels" are an absolute joke, classic echo chamber nonsense where any opposing views or data is instantly shut up by Bill with a laugh or a mocking comment, not very scientific if you ask me. Instead of many cool science experiments, we get clueless celebrities singing and dancing to present social/political views that have little to nothing to do with science. It's just absurd and offensive to actual scientists out there.
Every episode has a politcally/socially charged agenda and nothing is framed in objective and scientific ways, instead it's all just cherry picking, showmanship, echo chambers and "proof" consisting of interviewing someone for 1 minute who will give you the answer you want without any evidence or data presented to back it up.
Instead I was hoping for some actual science involving cool and interesting little experiments and focus on actual science which I vaguely remember Bill Nye being about as a kid. But you won't find that here. Stay away unless you're just interested in juvenile echo chambers pandering to your personal politics and social justice beliefs, then by all means you'll probably enjoy this. Clearly some did as seen by some of these unbelievable 10 star rating reviews just because they liked the views being pushed here enough to apparently ignore the awful "humor", annoying laugh track style audience (clearly coached/paid to laugh at literally every stupid thing Bill Nye says), pointless celebrities, disturbing lack of actual science and all the other terrible things about this show.
