Beautiful film with tons of heart
4 April 2019
Alita as a character is so great. The CGI is probably the best I have ever seen. She is charming and her story arc is beautiful to witness. For me the relationship between Alita and Dr. Ido is really beautiful. Two broken people coming together and helping to heal each other. I would go into more detail but don't want to spoil it for people that haven't seen the film. This is a must watch, even for people not into manga. I know nothing about manga and absolutely loved it.

It is a shame that so many people have the attention span of a squirrel

This movie is sure to be disliked by people whose favorite movies are all superhero or action movies but this movie is a masterpiece. If you like movies that have an amazing storyline, amazing atmosphere and actually take the time to tell a story this is the movie for you. This is one of my favorite movies of all time.

This film literally killed Star Wars (Spoilers)
13 January 2018
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is absolutely an insult to anyone's intelligence. Huge plot holes, zero character developments. It teases things only to either forget about it or when you do find out the answer, it is pointless. Speaking of pointless, this movie is full of pointless and boring subplots that have no bearing on the movie. How can this movie possibly get a 7.5/10 on IMDB. It really makes one wonder how these ratings are tabulated. The treatment of Luke Skywalker's character was an abomination. It made no sense and was not even close to the character that the movies had established. Then they ruined the finale of Luke by making the entire thing an astroprojection, then he died from being tired. OMG. Why not just go and fight if you are going to die anyway? Leia turned into superman in space. Incredibly stupid. I can go on for pages but this is already pretty long.

Very realistic portrayal of high school
12 January 2012
One thing this movie does very well is its portrayal of high school life. The characters were pretty believable and the overall scenes were well put together. The movie starts out so well for me, and I was very into it but then the movie just stalls out 40 minutes in. Literally nothing happens for the rest of the movie until the very end. The time is not really even spent developing the characters further, or helping us to understand or identify with them. Much of the time is just like sitting in a high school watching unimportant everyday activities of the students to no end. I guess this was done to make it seem more like a documentary but it kind but to me it just seemed like filler. It is hard for me to even remember what exactly happened in detail because nothing really did for long stretches of the film. One would think that with all of the build up leading to the end, that it would finish with a really strong ending. Nope. I guess that was the director's intent (to be artsy and different) but a movie with a lot of filler and an anticlimactic ending just isn't compelling enough to me.

Awesome film
12 January 2012
This film was simply great. I got the movie over netflix and it was a really pleasant surprise. The film sets up very well. At first I got the sense that it was just another robbery gone wrong film which has been done so many times it is ridiculous. This was a very cleverly put together and fun film with some great surprises. One thing I found hilarious was the constantly changing allegiances between the characters. Everyone was so desperate to survive, they joined forces with whoever they thought gave them the best chance. The character of Boris will supply plenty of laughs as will the dim witted brothers. Bad Russian accents, low budget, and over the top but this is a true B movie horror gem. Check it out!

Not for the faint of heart
12 January 2012
I rarely comment on movies on IMDb but there are a few that I remember for all the wrong reasons. When I see they have a really high star rating I feel compelled to weigh in. I usually agree with IMDb's assessment (with the exception of "bad" horror films which I enjoy). The movie starts out with an interesting premise but it is a bit gratuitous and I would say a bit exploitative of the 13 year old character in this movie. It almost struck me as a film that was written by a pedophile. This movie was depressing and depicted a heck of a lot of depravity and even pedophilia. I love film noir, love gritty grindhouse films and stuff like that. This is VERY different from that. I got itchy watching it and as a parent, I was revolted with the sexual depiction of the young girl in this. I understand reality in films but this was just going too far to be enjoyable in my opinion. I was not entertained.

I see a lot of movies
10 January 2012
I am educated and appreciate the symbolic movies. In fact, "Songs from the Second Floor" is one of my favorite movies. Many have called this movie so intelligent, so very deep that if you aren't a genius, you just can't understand it! I laughed at those comments; I guess conceit pretentiousness is also a requirement.

This movie was pretentious and preachy as hell. It spoke down to the viewer as if they were idiots with kindergarten philosophy and cliché's. The sheer quantity of vapid voice overs was astounding. Malick really has no idea what he is talking about in this movie and he speaks to us as if he is the ultimate authority. I have an iron constitution for bad movies but this one actually made me and my friend leave the theatre after about 2 hours and 15 minutes. We were not alone in leaving, and a theatre manager was at the ready with a refund without even having to ask for it. I guess it was a common request. Some people seem to like this film but I found it to be the opposite of brilliant and metaphorical... empty and clichéd.

A slice of life film with very good acting and a solid plot
18 September 2010
This film receiving a 3.6/10 is unfathomable to me. The acting is superb and the plot develops very well. This film is about a family and their close knit friends having to live with the hard choices they make, and the price they pay for those choices. There is real emotion to this film and the characters are developed extremely well. It has elements of film noir in its gritty and detailed depiction of characters with rough edges and all but that really adds to this film's power. Ed Harris does not disappoint in his role as the deeply flawed yet caring father, who puts everything on the line for his son over and over again (not wanting to spoil anything, that is all I will say about that). An excellent film, well worth watching.

A really generic movie with bad dialog
18 August 2010
Warning: Spoilers
This is a movie that begins by spoiling the movie and then going back in time like so many movies have done before. There are so many movie clichés in this flick you could make a drinking game out if it. The characters' actions do not make any sense and neither does the ending. If I hear the scorpion crossing the river story in another movie, I am going to freak out. It is up there with "We are the same.. you and I!" The dialog is really badly written, and the characters' motivations get jumbled up so often, the characters make no sense. This supposedly HUGE powerful crime boss brings a small timer into his home (why?), gets insulted and then just lets him leave (why?). Then kills the small timer's wife and then remains at that very house. Then has next to no protection on his home, a house he showed him how to get to. Characters bust out knives when it is convenient for the plot. This generic hole filled plot was really bad and the action scenes were pretty generic too. People casually chatting back and forth while gunfighting, senseless character actions, implausible circumstances over and over again. I tend to turn my brain off for action movies, but this one was beyond brain dead. It was like the script was written by a 12 year old with no editing. Many scenes had a "come on, that is ridiculous" moment. If it was cheesy and campy, it may have come off, but this movie took itself seriously.
