The David Dance (2014)
Touching tale of family and relationships
I just saw this film at the Cinequest Film Festival in San Jose, California. I thought it was an excellent, touching story. The casting was done in an interesting way. Without giving anything away (in other words, no "spoiler alert" needed) I can tell you that the film addresses current social issues, but ultimately is about relationships and the importance of family in our lives. Central to the story is the relationship, both as adults and - in flashbacks - to their childhood, between David, a shy fellow, and his delightfully quirky sister. Through her, he finds love in different ways. David's Dance takes place in upstate New York, but there are a few scenes which take place in Brazil. As an American film, the language of the film is English. There are some scenes which are partially in Portuguese. No subtitles are provided, and that might be something to add if the movie seeks wider distribution. See this film if you have a chance!
Law & Order: Special Victims Unit: Harm (2007)
What does it mean to do harm?
I just watched this episode again. It concerns the death of a young woman who helps immigrants with her Arabic language skills, and the death of a New York City taxi driver, and the connections between these two victims. I think it is a fascinatingly complex story of two people who died, their families, and those who may have been responsible for this. Particularly interesting is the tension between the medical doctors in the story. Medical examiner Dr. Warner insists that the Hippocratic Oath cannot be compromised. FBI psychiatrist Dr. Wong is not so sure. Dr. Sutton, who is put on trial, really believes it is right to use her skills as a psychiatrist to interrogate prisoners who are kept in "stress positions" up to 48 hours. The doctors disagree strongly about what serves the greater good. While all are sincere in their beliefs, ultimately, only Dr. Warner behaves ethically.
