Dark, scary and powerful use of sound
13 December 2023
I was searching through all the streaming platforms to find something to watch last night and came across this gem. It has the feeling of Alien at the beginning, dark and unknown and without showing the aliens too soon. I found this scary and captivating at the same time. The use of sound is particularly well done here to build the tension. As others have said there is pretty much no dialogue and towards the end I found this a little distracting but it works in films like this. The ending isn't what I was expecting and kept me thinking. Great performance from the cast and I could feel the threat through the screen. If you're a true sci-fi horror fan then this one is for you.

Modern horror with a brain
19 August 2023
Just watched this today at the cinema and thought it was excellent. The characters were all engaging and well portrayed and rather than rely on jump scares or gore it taps into the more disturbing side of the psyche, delivering a sense of dread throughout. It deals with grief and loss and makes good use of this in terms of the desire to contact the dead and the risks associated should you meet something you're not expecting. It doesn't try to be too clever with twists and turns, just good old fashioned story telling with a very dark side. You can kind of work out the ending about half way through based on some of the script but it didn't take away from the experience. Highly recommended.

It's a roller coaster of a ride

Warning: Spoilers
The show itself is ok and we're half way through watching the series. At times, it's a good insight into living with BiPolar for both the sufferer and the family. There are some real continuity issues that take away from the sense of this being real and in the moment. There's one scene where Tysons ice cream miraculously grows and then disappears showing that this was shot a few times to get the content. The Fury's themselves seem to be living in a world of contradiction. They claim to live like travellers and follow the traveller code and keep it grounded but then every item of clothing is designer, expensive and even the kids are wearing Rolex watches despite the claim from Paris that they aren't spoiling them. It's like they don't know how to accept who they are and what they've got for fear of losing touch with their roots. Tyson is the same. I drive a Passat, except for when I'm driving the Lambo or the Ferrari! And how did they not know that Molly Mae was pregnant at six months when the whole of instagram did? Clearly not close to his brother Tommy. I do have some sympathy for Tyson though, when he's getting filmed and photographed all the time by the people around and the guy who comments to him about AJ beating him when he's just chilling out on a bench shows how cruel people can be and rude. Interesting insight into their lives but I hope for their sake that they don't make another series.

First 2 series brilliant, don't bother after that
9 December 2014
I'll keep this short, if you are thinking of investing time in this series i would highly recommend the first two seasons but don't waste your time with the third or fourth as they are totally different and a real let down considering the strong start. The first two series have great story lines and plots and then it all goes wrong after that. One of the problems is that they keep using the same actors and therefore it's difficult to engage with them as different characters but the major issue is the sloppy, lazy writing in the third and fourth series. They aren't scary and by the fourth they are reliant on gore and violence to try to get a scare from the audience, when that happens in any horror tale you know they've hit the wrong note in terms of the writing. Hope that helps..

Good but not great
9 December 2014
I had high expectations for this film and i did enjoy it, however i also left the cinema feeling a bit disappointed. I thought it looked beautiful, had an interesting setup in terms of the situations of the people, both on earth and in space. BUT and it's a big but for me, i think it was too long, badly paced and by the end i couldn't help thinking it had all got a bit too carried away with it's own far fetched theories. I don't mind going along with it, even if it's all a bit of fantasy but when this film tries so hard to stick to what is theoretically possible i think it does a terrible job of bringing that to a realistic presentation. By the end i'd given up caring about the characters as i felt a bit ripped off by the last 20 minutes.

I would have liked more action on the planets surfaces and a bit less of the waffle in the space ship or at least less waffle and more action. I like Mr Nolan and i loved Inception but for me this wasn't as good as that.

Great trip down memory lane
9 December 2014
I've been waiting for this film for 20 years but at the same time i went to see it with no raised expectations. I went along with my 14 year old son as he loves the first movie as well. I wasn't disappointed and absolutely loved it! It takes a few minutes to settle into the age difference of the two main stars but once you disengage your brain and go with it, it's one hell of a joy ride with some real belly laughs. It does feel a bit more like a set of sketches with some convenient story line milestones along the way but who cares, you don't go to watch a movie like this expecting deep story lines and plot twists.

For me, it's all still there and Jim and Jeff light the screen up with their addictive characters and you can tell they're having as much fun as the audience playing these characters. I think these films show whats missing with so many comedies these days. Sometimes you just want some fun instead of improvised conversations that might hit with one joke out of twenty. For me, this film keeps the legend alive!! Bring back more of this type of comedy and more of Jim Carrey! Proper old school!

Ashley Greene can't save this one
31 December 2013
I watched this movie last night with low expectations. Those expectations were definitely met. Part of the problem is that the chemistry between the two leads just isn't there. Ashley Greene looks smokin hot throughout the film but her partner and her just don't ever seem like they are a real couple so you never really believe in the story. The parts that try to be tense and scary fail to get you feeling any tension. The one scene I did like was in the hotel room but again this could have been done better. All in all a pretty poor film. If you like this type of film i highly recommend the Conjuring instead. That is a far better film.

Hard to see why it's so loved
23 September 2013
Watched the film with my other half as thought this would be a good rom com with a different theme, however by half way through I wasn't sure if my wife wanted to continue or switch it off. I agree with some of the other reviews on here that the film doesn't dealt with mental illness very we'll, however I'm not sure that was the point of the film in the fist place. The first half was just a bit boring, some slightly amusing parts but not much else in the comedy department. The romance never feels like a romance as the connection between the two leads just doesn't fit properly. The performances from Mr Cooper and Miss Lawrence are very good and it has to be said I think they save this entire movie from being a total turkey. The last 20 minutes has some good tension as they approach the competition, it's just all a bit too much like hard work getting there and staying with it. Worth a watch but not worth much else.

The Thing (1982)

One of the best sci-fi horrors ever
23 September 2013
I have seen this film many times and still do not get bored of watching it. The special effects, the story, the acting and the script make this one of the best films of all time. For a film that is now over 30 years old it still feels like it could be released now and do well. I went to see the prequel and the use of CGI in that takes away everything that makes this film stand the test of time.

I introduced my 13 year old son to it and even he enjoyed it and commented that it doesn't look dated. If you are looking for something different from the modern horror movies and want to see a great Director at work then watch this film, you won be disappointed.

Evil Dead (2013)

Not very scary but still enjoyed it
17 August 2013
I am a huge fan of the original films as i watched them as a kid and think Bruce Campbell is an absolute legend! I watched this 'remake' with an open mind and not expecting it to replace the original films. I have to say I enjoyed it, however it is not very scary. Very gory but all credit to the makers that they didn't use CGI everywhere and went for traditional effects. I think they could have done more to introduce suspense instead of going for the full on gore fest, but at the same time the characters are in a cabin being attacked by evil demons. I don't think they are popping round for tea and sandwiches and to ask nicely if they can have your soul! Im surprised at all of the bad reviews talking about the level of gore as when i have watched other films like Hostel and Saw I have found those to be totally over the top. I laughed a few times at this films level of violence and gore just as i did at the Evil Dead 2 so for me I think the makers of the film knew exactly what they were doing. I would be up for a sequel but maybe next time go more for the suspense and pull back a little on the violence...

Good solid sci-fi film
17 August 2013
Thought this film did a great job of pulling together some of the best bits from other sci-fi alien abduction movies like Communion, Encounters, X-Files etc....

Thought the scares and jumps were in the right place and the performances were solid enough to keep you engaged. Nice to watch a film that doesn't rely on huge special effects or gore. Not as good as Communion but still worth a watch. I watched the movie with my 12 year old son and he also really enjoyed it. I was surprised at the budget for the film as thought they had done a great job with the limited funds.

My only criticism is the I think the film lost its way a little in the last act and seemed to rush to the conclusion.

In space you don't need to scream

Warning: Spoilers
Yet another disappointing film based on a misleading trailer. I am a big fan of the Alien films, Bladerunner, however I did not go to see this film expecting another Alien so had an open mind. It all started well but by the time the crew briefing had finished I was getting worried.

Then onto the planet and things started looking up with some great visuals and developing plot. Then it was all down hill from there. The last 40 minutes were awful. Shaw went from being an archaeologist to a doctor and medical expert. The operating scene was ridiculous as we were shown that a few staples do the trick!!!

And Guy Pierce? Surely they could have got an old man to play an old man!!!

Only bonus in the film was Charlize Theron in a tight outfit in 3D!!!!

Terrible film!!!!

Tron: Legacy (2010)

Can I have one of those Light Cycles for Christmas please?
19 December 2010
I won't go into the plot or the details of the storyline. I saw the first Tron when I was a kid and have always been a fan of the film. I have been watching the trailers for this film since they came out and couldn't wait to see it. I went with my 10 year old son, and we both really enjoyed it. It's nice to see a film that doesn't need gore or ultra-violence to make it real! Even in Avatar there were some moments where my son had to look away! I have been reading all of the critics reviews and have to say the 1 and 2 star ratings are not justified. Great family film that I would see again. My only criticism is that there was not enough action in the middle, they could have done more with the Grid games part to slow the whole process down and spread the action, instead it's over too quickly and leaves you wanting to see more action from the Light Cycles and Cars. The 3D is great but still not seen anything that matches Avatar in that respect. And yes, it has nicked parts from Star Wars, but then who hasn't??! That's why Star Wars was so great! Go and see Tron: Legacy and unleash the 'full geek' within!! You know you're in denial!!
