Soundless Wind Chime (2009)
An Emotional Ride.
Poetic and translucent. A pure, intense journey through emotions, amplified by the gorgeous visual and music score. Traveling back and forth through memories, dreams, recollections and fragments can be overwhelming, though it might be intentional as to make us feel how Ricky himself is feeling, lost and confused, lonely and desolate. A journey of a love that came from chance, small kindness, small crushes, that led to a whirlwind of feelings and breathtaking moments that got me sobbing so hard. Though to understand the full scope of this film, a second viewing is quite necessary, the first time of you watching this movie will take you on a ride through the poetic quality of a Chinese film, with the intensity of an indie movie, so out of norm, so random, so fragile that in the end, delivers a fascinating, heartfelt, confusing, demanding and touching film, that will leave you gasping for air.
D-War (2007)
I should have just put on a DVD of How to Grow Cactus in Less Than A Day.
Awful. Awful. Oh, did I mention is was awful? Oh yes, I did...
First, who the hell think that some western, Caucasian dude with absolutely no acting skill can get off as the descendant, anointed warrior of destiny from the tale and lore FROM Korea! And that other, ridiculous girl with the dragon tattoo, dear god someone smack the back of the writer's head. Hard. That is on top of my movie cliché, the girl born with a mark that shows she is the predestined girl to save the world. Oh, did I mention her predecessor was a Korean, yes, a princess from some 10,000 miles away country who, in real life, was as familiar as Kim Chee to the actress.
Yes, even though it was quite fun to laugh at the ridiculous acting talent from that Behr dude, the ultra cheesy storyline and creatures that came straight from an online RPG game, this movie should have stayed inside that stupid ancient Korean box from whence the shinning light chose the young Jason Behr as the world's savior from a Korean Dragon. In the dark.
Do Começo ao Fim (2009)
Lacks the Bite
A love story circling 2 brothers is a shocker enough in a sentence, let alone be a movie. The movie starts off by having a very subtle, poetic undertone to it. The music providing a very thorough atmosphere to accompany the viewers throughout. We are given layers upon layers in understanding the relationship of the young lovers, still concealed in the name of youth. As they age and the viewers are given a very visual and rather erotic embodiment of the relationship, it starts to feel as if the movie is too naive, too perfect for a taboo and sadly, it ends with a less than climatic conclusion. Expecting a total controversy in storyline, this movie lacks the bite it appears to have.
Shelter (2007)
Perfect.
Expecting a rather shallow, coming-of-age-meeting-a-hunk kind of gay film, this movie delivers in many levels. The flow of the movie is perfectly carried, and with the ocean and surfing serving as a focal point and as an intermezzo to the journey, we are brought a cocktail of humble moments, awkward and sweet moments, intermingled with tension, crisis and topped off with a rather new twist to a happy ending.
This movie showed how to show a correct raw and intimate moment without being too erotic. Trevor Wright brought a stunning performance, adding many facets to the image of a troubled teen seeking an identity for himself and for the world around him. Marvelous movie.
