The Event (2010–2011)
Disappointing
22 September 2010
I was intrigued by the 4 minute extended trailer, and so I eagerly tuned in for the premiere. Unfortunately, it was very underwhelming. I didn't learn anything new from the 43 minute premiere that I hadn't already learnt from the 4 minute trailer. I actually found the premiere to be boring and unnecessarily drawn out.

Also, none of the characters really seemed all that interesting, except for maybe Mike and the lady from ER, but those aren't the main characters, so that's not a good sign.

I don't mind non-linear story telling, but, there didn't seem like all that much of a reason for the tactic here - it felt contrived. Also, this may seem like a minor point to some, but the way the "flashback" subtitles changed sizes really distracted me a lot. What's wrong with normal subtitles?

Anyways, I think I will give it one more episode to suck me in, but if the second episode is as underwhelming as the first, then I won't be tuning in.

Hit and Miss
19 September 2010
This show is hit and miss so far for me. The characters and premise have a lot of potential, but some episodes are just boring, and full of somewhat "manufactured" drama. Other episodes are better. The later episodes have been getting better, enough so that I'm sticking with it for now, but, I may give up if we get more dud episodes.

This show has some "soapy" elements. Certain aspects remind me a little bit of Desperate Housewives. But the show also has some more exciting supernatural action to it - it the writers are just trying to figure out the right balance, I guess.

Dylan is the best! And Claire and the chief. The chief's wife is a bit annoying, I feel, and most of the other characters are a bit "meh" so far. So, in short I'm still watching this because I watch too much TV, and I'm enjoying it enough, but I'm not that excited about this show. And if I was ever really busy with something, it would be one of the first casualties of my TV viewing schedule.

Love the Characters and Humor!
12 September 2010
I love the characters on this show - they are what makes it rise above the clichéd and tired episodic cop show, well, that and the "catch me if you can" inspired premise of an ex-conman helping the feds, which is handled in a fresh way here. My absolute favorite character is Mozzie - he is so endearing and funny.

While the plots are sometimes a tad predictable, the stories always feel fresh because of the brilliant acting and well-written banter between the two major leads. Also there is an ongoing mystery that carries over the course of the seasons, which adds a deeper layer to the show.

This is one of the shows I look forward to every week, I wish it had more episodes each season.

Covert Affairs (2010–2014)

Fun show with diverse cast!
8 September 2010
Warning: Spoilers
I'm really enjoying this show a lot. It is fun, with lots of action and humor too. My favorite part is the fact it has diverse characters. The lead is a female, who can kick butt. The second lead, Augie, is my favorite. He is blind (the character is, I don't think the actor is), but he is not limited by being blind. He can do cool things any way, including beat up guys twice his size :-)

There is also an Indian character who is an important secondary character. You hardly ever see Indian people playing major roles on TV, so I like that aspect of the show too. I do not think the show is very realistic in its depictions of the CIA, but I can't name one spy show that is! If you want to relax with a fun adventure show, Covert Affairs delivers.

I'm not so sure about the "Ben Mercer" love interest, though. I don't really like him much...and I hope the writers don't take the relationship he has with the lead into sappy territory. I guess we'll see.

Not just Roswell with Vampires
8 September 2010
Warning: Spoilers
At first I thought this show would just be Roswell with Vampires, but I was pleasantly surprised. There is plentiful eye candy for both male and female viewers (which is important for any vampire show!), and the characters are interesting and not 2D cookie cutter characters, and there are some interesting mysteries going on.

My only real complaint about the show is a moral ambiguity, well, not even a moral ambiguity, a blatant amorality by Damon. While I can understand that vampires kill people, Damon in several instances has just killed a human in cold blood, and there is no repercussion in the story. He doesn't feel guilty, no one really calls him out on it, and the viewer is then left with the impression it is a-okay and we should still feel sorry for and like Damon. While I get feeling a little sorry for Damon due to his back story, I really have a problem with the way his character is portrayed, and the message it sends to viewers.

Also, in my opinion some good characters get killed off too soon, without having enough time to really develop. On the bright side though, most of the "drama" is not drawn out unrealistically - the plot moves forward enough with each episode to stay interesting. So I'd rather have character arcs move too fast than too slowly, but I think they could take their time a bit more with certain characters.

Stargate Universe (2009–2011)
1/10
One of the Worst Shows Ever Created
6 September 2010
Warning: Spoilers
This show is one of the worst shows I have ever seen. Hard core sci-fi it is not. It is a soap opera in space, and a bad soap opera at that.

I am a big fan of SG-1 and SGA, and I was excited to see SGU when it came out. I thought a "darker" and more "serious" Stargate might be interesting. I like quality character drama, so I didn't write SGU off just because it wasn't going to be light-hearted, escapist action- adventure.

Unfortunately, the premiere was underwhelming, but I still watched a good chunk of the season (the first 8 and a half episodes and the last three). I kept hoping that at some point the show would get better. It didn't. With each episode, the plots dragged along at a snail's pace and the writers focused on the selfish, animalistic sides of humanity. I couldn't believe that the powers that be had transformed Stargate from something enjoyable with a wholesome message into base drivel seemingly inspired by Lord of the Flies.

All the characters in Stargate Universe are so despicable that I don't care about them at all. In fact, I am hoping they will die. They are the most amoral, selfish, backstabbing, whining wastes of space ever created. And they like to have sex while inhabiting other people's bodies (yes, you read that right). A lot of SGU fans like to claim that the SGU characters are more realistic than the characters in SG-1 and SGA. But I find the SGU characters much less realistic. I have never met anyone in real life so despicable. Surely the "best of the best" chosen for the top secret Stargate program would not be a bunch of losers that in real life would not have even passed their first multiple choice psych evals!

The reason I tuned in for the last three episodes of the season (after giving up hope the show would improve around episode 8) was honestly just that I wanted to see if the arrival of the Lucian Alliance would mean the demise of some of my least favorite characters. Sadly, based on the trailers for season 2, it looks like almost everyone survived.

Stargate Universe is a sorry excuse for sci-fi, and a sorry excuse for any TV show, no matter what the genre. It is not worth your time.
