Engrossing and Beautiful.
6 December 2004
The few Bollywood films I've seen have usually thrown me for a loop - I have trouble holding on to all of the plot points when the music videos interrupt - but this one grabbed me and wouldn't let go. When the dancing happened, the story wasn't destroyed. The constant gorgeous visuals helped carry me through, and the actors were completely engaging. It was great to be able to enjoy Jane Austen again, without knowing quite what would happen next.

Someone must have misunderstood the system when rating this movie. It's far better than the 6.1 it has right now. The only trouble I noticed was that Miss World kept outshining her surroundings, and occasionally drew my attention away from the story. No complaints, though.

Flawless

Beautiful, moving, engaging, perfect.

I couldn't think about much else for about a week after I saw this movie. The characters became completely real over the course of the film, the overwhelming beauty of every single shot nearly brought me to tears once or twice... I have trouble feeling qualified to comment on the acting, since I saw it with English subtitles, but if I did feel qualified, I would say their performances were flawless. I will be watching everything by the director that I can get my hands on.

A few times, though, I did think, "How could anyone see this movie and think, 'Hey, we oughta buy all the distribution rights to this, chop it up, and sell our version to Americans!'" (I saw a preview to the American version before Kill Bill Vol. 2, and nearly threw something at the screen. The opening line spoken by the announcer was drastically inappropriate for the scene playing as he spoke, unless the entire movie has been put into a blender and randomly pieced back together by monkeys.)

Key West (1993)
unforgettable
7 May 2003
My little sister and I didn't know what was different about Key West, but we watched it faithfully, and were mightily disgruntled when it disappeared without apology. The characters, the colors, the dialogue, and some other unnameable thing made this show unforgettable. I'd say 'haunting,' but it wouldn't convey the quiet smile I find when I remember the way Jennifer Tilly said, "Seamus, Baby," when he had that awful fever, or the upbeat-but-not-sappy way the (kooky, but r e a l ) characters interacted. If someone knows where this is available on DVD, I know two nostalgic 20-somethings who'll buy it up in a minute flat.
