The House That Jack Built (2018)
Karl Marx
Slavoj Zizek said once about Melancholia that it's easier to imagine the end of the World than the end of capitalism. That's pretty much the line Lars von Trier won't cross. Karl Marx once said a critical theologian is still a theologian. He could be more interesting than regular theologians, but in the end he still can't think about the world critically. A girls screams in the movie and what happens? Well, Karl Marx would know what's happening. Lars von Trier doesn't. He can't burst his theologian's bubble. He's not capable of that. He has to resort to silly theology because he can't imagine the end of capitalism. Trier's movies are good indicators of where we're at, no doubt about it. And if you're aware of Trier's definicies, the line he cannot cross, if you don't expect from him something really radical, you could find that his movies are standing on their heads. Never on their feet. That will never happen. This movie in particular is a living proof of that. Trier never was and never will be radical.
Hereditary (2018)
Not that good
The hype may be real - for eleven years olds. Maybe I'm getting old but this movie, as well as many more contemporary horror films, is just not that great. A couple of decades ago even mediocre movies payed attention to some details of the plot, people worked their asses off to make the scene look better. Now, when a couple of movies a year just look ok, nothing special, just like someone actually got to his job and made something from 9 to 5, you get Hereditary - something that would be mediocre twenty-thirty years ago. So yeah, I gave it a 7, it's ok, don't call it a masterpiece, don't say it scared you, unless you also state you're eleven years old.
Yi lu shun feng (2016)
Another great one from Mong-Hong Chung
I can't spell his name but this director is absolutely fascinating. I have seen only two of his movies (Soul and Godspeed) and can't find the earlier ones, but the last two are magnificent works. This one, Godspeed, let's say this is my free interpretation, is an answer to Nicholas W. Refn's Only God Forgives.
It has the same Asian actor, and a couple of other things that made me think of Refn. But this is not in any way some copy of OGF. Quite the contrary, it seems like a critique, or at least a different perspective on life itself. A different "godspeed" and different forgiveness.
It is very contemplative but at the same time very funny. The dramatic parts are excellent, no cheap pathetic here, and God knows contemporary movies are full of them. Can't wait for Mong-Hong Chung's next film or at least to find the old ones!
To bad so little attention he gets, while some other Asian idiots are all over the place. Oh, well, it's not that much different in Europe, where people praise some Nymphomaniacs or something. Godspeed is real stuff.
February (2015)
Better than The VVitch!
Yes, if you hate this film you are an idiot. IMDb rating is ridiculous. Such a good movie, basically one of the best in 2016, and the IMDb users are idiots. The story is more complex than these idiots would think. It has flaws, but if you don't see the good sides you're not a film lover. It doesn't even have boring moments like Neon Demon or The VVitch, the director made a great job with the actresses, haven't seen that since Hitchcock. What would he do with a Vertigo remake, or something... The girls are fantastic. Thank you, Oz Perkins, for giving us Blackcoat's Daughter. I hope we'll see more of your work soon. It's a shame this film has 5,3 IMDb rating.
Justified (2010)
Disappointing
This was a 10 for me, until last season. Other seasons were not perfect but they were still a part of Justified. Final season destroyed all that. Sure, the bad guys are dead or in jail, the good guy is lonesome stranger forever, but that's not really what the show was about. It was never about good and bad, it was not black and white.
Who is actually a bad guy here? Producers destroyed Boyd's character because he's a criminal? Wow, and I thought this show will not be such a cliché. Very unsatisfied, I mean what now, everyone is happy after all this, America will prosper or what? I feel Raylan just destroyed America. The End should be about both Boyd and Raylan in a eternal clash, a mythological fight that never ends. Instead, they made something stupid. Dropped from 10 to 5, and I'm being generous.
You made a great show into a stupid propaganda series.
Dans la cour (2014)
Polanski's Repulsion?
There are definitely some references, like crack in the wall, but the crack thing goes in a completely different direction. In Repulsion, Deneuve is over the top, simulacra of madness, here, she's a regular patient, no wild insanity thing, it's pretty ordinary, by the book. But everyone in the movie is a bit crazy, in some dark comedy kind of way. Little neighbourhood is very well depicted. Ending is, however, not very good, lost points for me. Something is missing there. But still, a nice movie. Good acting, interesting characters, some weird scenes, there's a lot of cute stuff, but that ending is haunting me. Too weak, to dry, too short, no real closure. Why?
True Detective (2014)
Season 2 is much better than Season 1
Just hoping this title will provoke some obviously uneducated people to walk away from this series. This is really not for you. This is, what's the word - smart. It's not ''entertaining'', seriously, I don't know what that word even means. I don't want to be entertained. What is ''entertaining'', what is ''not boring''...
Please, just walk away.
So many little clues to season 1, so many connections, even some obvious ones at Casper's place, so many great references to Kubrick and Lynch, a new intellectual level, upgrading the season 1. Sorry, just walk away, I want to enjoy this, highbrow style. Go and don't look back, it will bore you, you will turn in stone if you just gaze at it once more. Fly, you fools!
Forever (2014)
I could watch this forever
I don't know much about ratings, the profit, the whole shebang, but I know I enjoyed watching this show, all the great actors who made this wonderful series, and shined in every scene. For a long time I couldn't find a series that is really sensible, human and entertaining. It's great even in the ''little'' scenes, it's cute, it's funny, you can almoust smell fresh air. And then it got cancelled, so we could watch another season of Game of Morons, or Breath Bad, or Haniball psychos, or any other ''quality'' show. Actually, all of them had lower or pretty much the same ratings in the first season, just like Forever, but no one cancelled Game of Morons. Thank you ABC, for pointing out that you think we're idiots, sell us some more crap! Thanks!
Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)
Fishy Road
Allegory about how big bad Immortan George Bush got enormous power (gas, water and bullets), became totally crazy, and someone needed to stop him!
And one-arm Hillary Clinton stepped in! The Next President will manage those resources in a better way! Not!
Of course, a bunch of girls escaped from a guy who gave them all the fancy clothes, not to mention the wax. And when they realized the feminism without hairy legs is immposible in the Green Place, they knew they have to go back for the wax, clean water and soap.
Now one-arm Hillary will manage all the resources, the Gas town and Bullet farm.
And you know what they say, bullets don't kill people, gas kills people!
The Babadook (2014)
Best ending in a long time
Several reviewers said that the last 15 minutes were disappointing. But they're the greatest part of the movie! Sure, it's not some generic, idiotic horror, it's more complex than that, horror is a tool, there's so much layers in the movie, and it's actually a debut, first full length film by this female director, which is also important, considering feminist themes in the movie. The end is ambivalent, it's not one-sided pro or anti-feminist, it goes deeper. A debut with a 30.000$ budget, I mean, what else should anyone say when they hear a 30.000$ budget, and the film looks great. A director has to be given a chance to make more movies. Of course it's not a masterpiece, but for God's sake, if you watched Insidious, Conjuring or Annabelle than you've already wasted 5 hours of your life, and Babadook is definitely not a waste.
Breaking Bad (2008)
This is just wrong
I don't usually write a review, but 9,6 rating for BB is too much for me. I guess I can understand the ''existential anger'' people feel in the modern world, but WW is not the embodiment of it.
First, as someone who HAD a cancer patient in my family, I'm deeply upset by representation of cancer patients in this series. Sure it's just a ''plot thing'', nowadays everything is f...... narrative, just get along, it will pay off - it's kid's talk. It upsets me. You don't have to embody existential crisis by literal cancerous growth, it's scriptwriting for idiots. You have existential crisis in True detective and you don't have cancer.
Second, is it really ''existential''? I mean, the only thing I see is a high school professor turning into an animal who marks his territory (stay away from my supermarket!). It's libertarianism at it's worst. The big father of the family doesn't take charity, becomes a drug boss, gets angry at anyone who compromises his manhood, says ''I win'' when he ''wins'', wow, and I thought Adorno was joking when he sad TV programme is made for 11 year olds. Eleven year olds on a ''free market''.
You think there's something deep in here, well, there is, deep male insecurity and fear that tries to compensate the lack by criminal activity and masculine hyperrealism. It has been done in Godfather with Italian rednecks - Sicilians. Being a man doesn't mean to be a primitive a$$hole.
Sorry for my English, I really couldn't be bothered to look up the dictionary if I made some grammatical mistakes. There's plenty of chauvinist, patriarchal and libertarian crap in BB, so it makes us even.
Fetih 1453 (2012)
Nationalism
I really didn't expect that in the 21st century someone makes this kind of film. It's without a doubt medieval fundamentalist nightmare that makes you wonder if contemporary Turks actually support this kind of behaviour. It's one thing to admire your past, but it's completely other thing when you don't acknowledge the tragedy of any war but actually cheer for one side like it's the Nazis on the other. The film explains the motivation for attacking Constantinopole by the words of Prophet himself! Nine hundred years before he started the idea of conquering Constantinopole! Really disturbing in so many ways, that after centuries some people's minds haven't moved in the more human direction. I hope this the movie doesn't represent feelings and attitudes of today's Turks.
