Another Life (2019–2021)

Dreadful muck.
23 October 2021
Incoherent story, characters who, one would assume, are trained, drilled, and professional but who fall apart at the slightest issue. A Captain who (literally) seems to spend all of her time dreaming about her child and husband and having emotional break downs over it, a medic/doctor who gapes and yells 'I don't know what to do' - and then proceeds to do NOTHING! - when a crew member becomes ill.

Of course, the usual worn-out tropes of conniving back-stabber 2IC, foul-mouthed 'tough' girl, competent 'tough' girl whose loyalty is 'challenged', bros who oggle their crewmates and - of course!! - women crew who run around in sleeveless, shoulder-baring, deep-cleavage tops, bra-and-panty sets, etc., while the men on the crew are in (literal) turtlenecks, coveralls, and layers of clothing.

Inane dialogue, 'emergencies' that make no sense and a ship that apparently stops working/breaks/falls apart if anybody sneezes, supposedly hand-picked, trained, scientific crew who don't know how to fix anything or improvise and.....the DRAMA!! So much soap-opera drama-llama.....

Just give this on a great, big skip.

Another Gorgeous Adventure! - Bad Reviews Truly Baffling
11 October 2020
I get the feeling that a lot of the 'bad' reviews have a) never seen the other installments and b) are easily bored. I am *loving* this. They're all driving completely new, prototype machines that have never been driven over such terrain or distances before, learning about them as they go. I think it's so cool that HD and Rivira were able to come up with road-worthy prototypes on such short notice.

The scenery is *fantastic*! Otherworldly. I have never seen such gorgeous views, it's great. And it's so awesome to see Ewan and Charley together again!

Complaints about it being 'scripted' are silly - it was filmed on the fly. Complaints about it being 'too green'....? Get a grip.

An excellent show so far (up to ep six), and I cannot wait to see more of the incredible Americas from the back of a bike!

Oh, boy....

When the 'teen' daughter that dad is angsting over (a camping trip! no adults! boys!!!!) is played by a 27 year old who reads closer to thirty-something, you know it's not gonna be good.

And it's just...really not.

Good background noise for when you need something to lull you to sleep.

A dull take on a classic story.
17 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The Secret Garden has long been a favorite book of mine, and I've read it a dozen times or more. Which is why this move was an utter disappointment. From the start, the voice-over narration is lifeless and pointless. The parents are killed in an earthquake - why change that? Plague not dramatic enough?

Clumsy exposition from the characters is intrusive, and the story is hurried along, skipping over so many moments that actually make the changes Mary goes through make sense and seem real. It's more like a Lifetime tv movie than a big-screen adaptation, and the weird 'romance' triangle introduced between the children (and the weirder summoning dance) only detracts from what could have been something good. The overall look is dull, the pacing lifeless, and the children, sadly, charmless.

Why do directors and producers feel the need to 'fix' or change stories that fans of those stories love as they are? When will someone actually do a version of The Secret Garden (or The Little Princess or Little Women) that's true to the story without additions, modernization, and a warping of the underlying tone and atmosphere?

Very disappointing.
