Blue Jasmine (2013)
A Disappointment and a Bore with some good acting
I went to the cinema to see this film out of two reasons; good reviews and Woody Allen.
The good things;
- Catherin Blanchetts is quite good; a little over the top maybe but it fits perfectly into the movie.
- Some Scenes have this funny moment; the movie really isn't a comedy but there are some standout instances.
The bad things;
- all the other acting; i quite like some of the actors (Cannavale, Baldwin) but none of them really were able to create a character, mostly because the writing didn't allow for it
- the characters; other than 'jasmine' none of the characters seem relatable
- the movie tries to touch so many subjects; "inferiority-complex", "living a simple life", "clash of classes", "drug issues" etc., but ultimately fails to tell us anything about these topics or portray them in an original style
- the writing; the overall story is written in an incoherent "patchy" way and in a extremely boring way, how the movie tries to tell the past-story through conversations is weak, the dialogs feel forced and fake, a lot of the characters and story lines are dropped (chilli's friend, Danny's life, Augie) without any apparent reason
- the movies really fails to accentuate the theme of the movie; a woman who can't cope with herself, her own mistakes.
I could understand that some critics would like the movie because of the tremendous talent that is shown by Mrs. Blachett, otherwise I can only think that they tried to bootlick a directorial legend.
The Informant! (2009)
Informant - tops and flops
I'd like to just give a very short review in the form of pro and cons:
*minor spoilers*
pro: - Matt Damons dramatic acting - portrayal of the decay of the "Whitacre" as a moral character - transition from 90s cinematic look to the "present" one - tony hale (apart from that short "busteresque" moment)
cons: - Matt Damons comedic acting (works at most for some late night show) - storytelling not very fluid - Thomas Wilson always seems on the edge of breaking character
The Movie would have maybe worked if not for the bad execution of its comedic intent (acting and script wise).
Rien à déclarer (2010)
not good
I initially didn't want to see this movie because I didn't love the first one (allthough I liked parts of it) - bienvenue chez les chtis - and because the theme seemed to be kind of the same as in BCLC.
I should have gone with my initial feelings, this movie is bad.
Where the humor in the first one was indeed funny and original in "RAD" (rien a declarer) it's a "schoolyard - puberty - bad parts from Ali G." kind of humor. Sometimes I felt as if this movie was a costly produced school project. Some Ideas (that (if well executed) would have been a bit funny) were shown in such an exaggerated manner (e.g. time-wise) that I laughed in the beginning. But after some minutes of depictions of ONE single joke I wanted to cry.
"RAD" lacks a good storytelling, the filmmaker should have realized that it is not enough to string together some "half-baked" ideas.
The whole French - Belgian thing was very badly realized and the acting was also done poorly (except Francois Damiens was funny in a quiet disturbing way).
To sum up I'd say that: "This movie makes you laugh because of how bad it is and because you feel obliged to pursue its comedic intend."
