The Whale (2022)
Crushingly mediocre
My 2 cents:
I thought it started with a lof of potential but in the end I realised it wasn't neither well-written, well-played nor well-directed (and I had high hopes because of Aronofsky). Concerning all the praise everywhere I found all of that a little odd. Don't get me wrong, i's not a bad movie per se, it's just not exceptionally good in any of the above aspects. It starts with a lot of questions and ends like a drawing-by-numbers tear jerker with out answering some of the question I'd still like to ask the characters. Not because I am really interested, just because some of the answers didn't make sense.
The Son (2022)
This is such a frustrating movie.
The film is about as clueless concerning mental illness as the parents shown are. The film stays completely in the perspective of the father and the mother who just keep on making one irrational decision after another. I felt like everytime the son wants to say something, to explain himself, the scene ist cut or fades out or something else happens that disturbs any information on what's going on with him. It seems as if even the movie has no clue what's wrong with him and doesn't really care. "The pain" is all we ever hear. The rest stays an enigma but not in a good way, this is just very sloppy. So all in all this is a very superficial movie, it seems as the script was written by someone who has read two or three general newspaper articles about depression for research and just gave it a go.
Hôtel Monterey (1973)
Perfect
This is just perfect, this is all cinema can be. It completely blew me away. Don't be fooled; the montage, the missing sound, the camera movements: This is transcending both fictional and documentary filmmaking.
Day of the Dead: Bloodline (2017)
It wasn't good but it also wasn't that bad...
I don't get all the one-star-reviews. The film was kind of entertaining. And it's obvious that it's a just loose remake without the social comments Romero would have included. I wish they would have made a bit more out of the zombie-above-average-intelligence ark even since Romero played around with this in his last movie. But you know, it's alright.
