The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy (2024)
Ugly Americans meets Grey's Anatomy
I played this show on a whim. I'm glad I did.
The animation and storytelling match well with one another. It takes abstract sci-fi fantasy humor to broach serious topics like emotional intelligence, personal relationships, sexuality, etc. Plus, there's a lot of heart throughout the whole show.
The pacing is great. Never a dull moment. It's graphic in gore content (hard to have a show about a hospital & not be honest in that respect).
The cast is awesome! There's a LOT of SNL alumni, plus Keke Palmer, Keiran Culkin, Sam Smith, & Natasha Lyonne, which brings a wide variety of personalities that makes everything fit in this crazily relatable eye candy universe.
Observe and Report (2009)
Where's My Mind?
Jody Hill knows how to take an abstract concept and run with it. It's like watching a fever dream and you keep asking, "Is it gonna get back to normal now? How about now?" But a part of you secretly doesn't want this to ride to end.
It goes down dark avenues you catch yourself laughing out loud, not only as a coping mechanism, but again, out of sheer, morbid curiosity.
The whole cast is great, with half of everyone being hyperboles of archetypes, and the other half being average normal people who somehow coexist in this world.
And the soundtrack will have you wanting more of its awesome selection.
In short - if you like Eastbound & Down, you'll like this for its own thing, as well.
Griselda (2024)
Timesuck fan, coming in hot!
I'm a big fan of Dan Cummins and his podcast Timesuck, where he goes deep down the rabbit hole on some of the craziest topics, with his comedic take and insight. One of his episodes covered Griselda Blanco, the Cocaine Godmother. So when I found out this miniseries based on her life was coming fruition AND stars Sofía Vergara - you bet I want to see things in a cinematic light!
You feel for the characters. You root for their success, but not their decisions in getting there. Definitely worthwhile and not for the faint of heart. This does not pull punches. There's some gore aspect that caught me off guard, but it comes with the subject matter.
If you like Breaking Bad, Ozarks, Narcos, etc., you'll definitely appreciate this awesome production.
3 out of 5 stars. Wouldn't change a thing!
A Karate Christmas Miracle (2019)
Laughed so hard I gave myself heartburn.
This is not a movie.
It's pure insanity, worthy of any group get-together. No one would believe you if you watched this by yourself. If you tried, it would sound MAYBE something like this:
This is seven, maybe seven "movies" put together through a fax machine, that set the fax machine on fire, and THEN, after whomever doused it with as much kerosene & jet fuel as possible to TRY and put it out... that nameless person (or people) thought to themselves, "... ya, this can work."
You want a good laugh? You want to lose your mind in the process? AND you want some Christmas flair added to it, that truly has nothing to do with anything?
Well say no more!
And even AFTER explaining all of that - you blink, then immediately realizing you have no friends (possibly because they all left in the process and/or didn't want to have an aneurism in front of you) and you lost your shoes. Don't ask. You did this to yourself.
The Marvels (2023)
This movie is a blast!
Trolls are everywhere and opinions come & go. That being said - As far as I can tell, this movie does not deserve all of the hate it's been getting.
Of course there's the whole aspect of the hero & villain having the same ability (at some point in the story) and their choices they make with said powers determine who they are as a whole. This IS an MCU movie; I don't know why some people are having a hard time with this concept.
The on screen chemistry, the character depth, and fun fight choreographs is pretty awesome! The story's villain/antagonist is relatable to a fault.
Mad shout out to Ms Marvel actress Iman Vellani for just being straight up... Marvelous!
The Boneyard (1991)
Phyllis Diller??? Why am I hearing about this NOW?
Ghoulsih horror-comedy with an interesting take on the cop/psychic dynamics, as well as various other aspects brought to the table.
Deborah Rose as Alley Oates does a great job, bringing depth to her character & brevity. She does a good job being the reluctant psychic, but also the most grounded person.
The creature effects are pretty great, and add its own flair to the story.
Also, the music is better than it deserves to be.
My only complaint is the audio mixing. When there's "no sound" - the static levels are way too high.
Other than that, this movie is fun and you can tell they had a fun time making it.
Pontypool (2008)
Canadian Chuck Palahniuk
This is a classic example of "less is more".
Pontypool is one of the craziest rides of a film I've ever experienced. I went in thinking it was one thing and it goes above & beyond expectations, and it's done solely on narrative, with some visual exposition.
For movies/film being a visual & audio relationship, they utilize mostly description & provides you a grounded atmosphere that sucks you in on what shortly escalates into an unexpected avenue full of twists & turns.
This is not your typical zombie/outbreak movie.
Also, I could listen to the voice of Stephen McHattie (aka Grant Mazzy) the entire time, no matter the context.
Saturday Morning All Star Hits! (2021)
Meta-humor in all the right (and so wrong) places
It's a combination of Saturday TV Funhouse and that one skit on SNL where John Goodman was in a kid's show, while getting news updates about the actor (Goodman) in the kid's show, committing crimes.
When you realize there's an actual story that's intertwined with the whole thing it's a fun experience. Kind of like a serialized Tim & Eric sketch.
It's dark, relatable, and overall hilarious!
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia: Charlie Work (2015)
Accurate
Anybody who's ever worked in any fast paced work environment would understand after watching this episode.
Foodfight! (2012)
Perfect for a Bad Movie Night
This movie leaves you with nightmare fuel and questions.
Both aren't satisfying to have, but I digress.
The Brink (2015)
Still one of my favorite shows
It's only one season and I truly wish there were more episodes.
It was a good blend of problematic & plausible world events, high stakes tension, and laced with dark satirical commentary throughout every episode.
The ensemble is great, having a good balance of screen time for everybody, including the supporting actors, showing their worth & versatile depth.
If you have a day to binge, I highly recommend it.
Time Runner (1993)
Such a fun, so bad it's good, kind of flick.
Do you like time travel paradoxes that really don't make sense? Alien invasions with gun fights & blue screen special effects? How about a slow mo shot that leads to no where? Or even Mark Hamill hamming it up like no other?
Then this is the movie for you!
Best Worst Movie (2009)
Wholesome, Honest, Genuine.
Saw Troll 2; couldn't believe my eyes & what I experienced, even reminiscing about it days later. THEN I heard about this documentary.
First off - George Hardy is simply wonderful. That man has charm. Period.
Secondly - to have the lead child actor from the original movie put this altogether is just awesome. Mad props for owning it, in every sense of the phrase.
Third - super insightful. Had no idea how much of a cult following it has.
Real people. Real stuff.
Superhero Movie (2008)
Silly, stupid fun
I caught myself laughing out loud during the dumbest moments. The slapstick & meta humor is still funny, the whole thing is super over the top. There are some jokes that are cringe worthy, but the overall flow is worth it. Plus, you get Leslie Nielsen being his hilarious self.
