Sweet Smell of Success (1957)
Superb cinematography
J. J. Saying "I love this dirty town", reminds me Donald saying "I love this country"; same reasons. That's how insightful this film is.
The acting is amazing, especially Curtis who suddenly becomes a grant actor.
But what strikes the most is the cinematography. Each plan has the power of a memorable photo and lets you imagine a thousand other stories.
The only reason I didn't put a 9 is because the script cuts the threads a bit too short. This imposes rather than lets imagine. I had a little difficulty with the scene where Steve meets J. J. Is this really the way someone who meets the brother of the one he claims to love should behave?
The Last Duel (2021)
Great movie marred by overuse of filters
This film would be perfect if it weren't for this habit of filters that pervert the image. Here permanently a filter which reinforces the blue and cold tones and which, I suppose, is intended to give a dark image to the whole. I would have preferred a know-how which, rather than relying on filters, would bet on the composition of the image itself by using its grammar. Cinema today uses filters like women use perfume. Formerly the woman put a drop of perfume on her finger and passed it delicately behind her ears. The result added to the sensuality and "mystery" of the person. Today, too many women literally spray themselves, the result is hopeless, the flies fall in full flight and rather than adding to the sensuality, it is most often migraines for those around. It's the same for filters, their overuse distorts too many films today. This is really a problem with The Last Duel since almost every scene is distorted by the overuse of filters. There is, however, a use of natural sets, as in the Dordogne, but everything is spoiled by the corruption of natural colors, so much so that it seems that everything was shot in studio sets. I do not understand how Ridley Scott arrived at this choice without which his film would have practically touched on the masterpiece.
Losing Alice (2020)
Abusive use of ridiculous color filters
It is in the dramatization that the atmosphere of a film must develop, not in the abusive use of ridiculous color filters. Here, the overuse of these filters annoyed me so much that I found myself unable to continue. As for the script itself, a story with a passionate connotation that is up to date, but which does not add anything new or even captivating.
The Midnight Sky (2020)
Science fiction as it should be
Those for whom a film should be pure adrenaline without substance will not be satisfied. Those who seek meaning, poetry and also reasons for hope, these people will be fulfilled. In line with Interstellar or Her, here is science fiction as it should be, in other words: speculative future both for our species and for life as a whole, and that without necessarily being a question of good guys who have to fight bad guys. For that, there are many other genres to let off steam.
I'm not rating 10 because it's not a masterpiece, nor am I rating 9 because the suspenseful scenes look like they were placed in the movie to please those waiting only for that.
Gwoemul (2006)
This is not a movie about absurdity, this is an absurd movie
Is it cultural? Is it an ode to emptiness? I absolutely don't understand how someone can find something interesting in this movie. Nothing funny, nothing realistic, nothing scary, nothing, nothing, nothing down the line. I put two rather than one only for the filmography.
On the Rocks (2020)
Not bad, but more a Nora Ephron movie than a Sofia Coppola movie
Well, I was expecting to see a Sofia Coppola movie, but I ended up watching a Nora Ephron movie. Not a bad movie, we spend 90 pleasant minutes, but it's a bit like finding ourselves in a good steak house when we had planned a fine gourmet restaurant.
A film that does not go beyond what it offers: an hour and a half of relaxation then oblivion. In the end, it's still better than nothing, and probably the intention was not higher.
Tehran (2020)
Flat
I'm disappointed. The pace is not sustained, the story in itself is superficial and often not so credible. The characters are interchangeable or cliché. The dialogues serve only the cohesion needs of the story. I was expecting something more subtle, more informative or at least with more suspense. We are far from something like Fauda.
The Spy Who Loved Me (1977)
Ridicule does not kill
Ridicule does not kill, otherwise James Bond (sadly) would be dead and buried.
A seven-year-old would probably have written a script more truthfully.
Moore's interpretation suggests that Her Majesty's agent is more sexually obsessed than gentleman, while women seems only present to glorify his inappropriate lubricity.
After Man With the Golden Gun and this one, it's hard to understand how the brand survived.
Only the cinematography makes me put a second star.
Burdensome!
Black Moon (1975)
Irritating
One of those films which annoys during the viewing, but which remain embedded in the memory to the point that you end up saying that there was something. Here, no doubt that once again Louis Malle sought to identify (or reveal) the genesis of desire. Unfortunately, the exercise is rather irritating.
Midsommar (2019)
Banal horror movie
Banal horror movie who pretend to be great cinema.
To see by those who want to learn what is bad cinema. Let's not talk about the acting, except to laugh or cry.
Nothing to do with Sweden except the stupid distortion of a beautiful cultural tradition.
My four points are given only for the cinematography.
3 Women (1977)
unbearable
I do not know why-l will have to find it a day-but I find Robert Altman's films unbearable, and 3 Women is the one that stitches me the most. It's probably personal, but I'm left with the impression that this filmmaker is a scam artist. Is there anyone in the room who feels the same?

Genius (2016)
Don't mention "true story" when it's a total distortion
Grotesque! Did the writer take the trouble to read Wolfe? Did Jude Law only read Wolfe? Did Nicole Kidman read the correspondence between Thomas and Aline? It is to be believed that nobody wanted to check facts and people as they were. Wolfe was a shy giant, but the script depicts him as an unstoppable narcissist. The twentieth century gives two geniuses to American literature: William Faulkner and Thomas Clayton Wolfe. This movie is an insult made to the second. Do not go see it, rather take the time to read or reread Wolfe. Wants to know more about the Wolfe- Perkins relationship? Read "To Loot My Life Clean: The Thomas Wolfe- Maxwell Perkins Correspondence". Mr. Law, you may have interpreted the character of the script correctly, but your duty was first and foremost to find out who the real Thomas Wolfe was.
