Wonder Park (2019)
8/10
Really? 5.9?
21 April 2019
Since I watched the trailer I wanted to see this movie. It made me feel it could be something really special. Then I saw the rating and I was a little disappointed because I thought it was going to be packed with stupid jokes just to make kids laugh, but I'm so glad I was wrong. For an amusement park lover as myself it was an amazing ride, it is an ode to imagination and the ability we all have to create, (it all starts with a thought) , and you have to be willing to listen to the voice in order to create, wether its an inner voice, or a family member. Also animal characters are lovable and not annoying like in other animated movies. Overall a very fun and touching experience, widely recommended for everyone, but even more for parents who want to help their children to get the best out of their imagination.

a very pleasant surprise
25 March 2012
Every time that a movie based on a book comes out, people start to compare both as if they were supposed to be the same. Thats pretty much impossible cause the film is actually the director s vision of the book and obviously not everyone feels the same things reading a book or watching a movie. Now I have to admit that every bestseller turned to movie is suspicious to me ( we have things like Eragon ( uninteresting) The Golden Compass ( it ends when its starting to get interesting) or Twilight ( unbearable unless you are a hardcore fan) so I was expecting a so so movie with The hunger games. Thats why I was pleasantly surprised by this movie. It has an amazing performance from Jennifer Lawrence to start with, the custom design is awesome, the score is excellent and there are some lines in the movie that really caught me. If this was an R rated movie probably it could have been a little better but the final result is an entertaining and well worth movie

Top Cat (2011)
2/10
and the razzie goes to.. top cat oh wait this is made in Mexico
12 October 2011
Warning: Spoilers
if this movie was produced in the US probably it would be the winner of at least two razzies: worst screenplay and worst picture. Now everyone knows that Top Cat ( Don Gato) was a lot more successful here in Mexico, it was clever and fun. So maybe that is why Anima Studios though that this was going to work as a full lenght feature. The positive things: the effort in the animation ( this is an industry that is not consolidated yet, also the voice of El Tata as Benito and Cucho and some references to the original cartoon like de maraja. The rest of it is just awful. ( Spoiler) The villain wants to conquer the city using robots? ( ebd of spoiler) and I have to say that this is the most irritating character in film history you seriously want him to die in one of jigsaw s games it is absolutely unbearable, the script is also very bad there is no real conflict, or at least not one that represents a challenge for Top Cat. Seriously, I only heard two kids laughing once and that is just awful. Its also sad that animators think that kids are stupid "Oh its a kids movie they will laugh anyway" Well they didn't. Worst movie of the year no contender so far.

Larry Crowne (2011)

sadly one of the worst movies of the year
12 September 2011
I agree with some other reviews saying that the poster and the trailer for the movie somehow makes people think that they are going to see a light but enjoyable romantic comedy. I was expecting to be good frankly. I mean Julia Roberts has Pretty woman and Notting Hill, Tom Hanks has You ve got mail and Sleepless in Seatle so the less you can expect from this actors together in a movie is good film. But I was so wrong. The characters are not likable at all. Tom Hanks really needs to take more rolls like Road to perdition he is already abusing of his role of the gold heart man and in this movie he looks really fake. Julia Roberts also fails terribly, she has lost the charm completely in this movie, they don't have chemistry at all I mean "this course changed my life I met you" really? I got mad at that point ( spoilers) and the main problem of Julia Roberts with her husband is that he watches porn? just plain awful I was going to give this a 5 but I reconsider is just bad. not the worst but very mediocre and disappointing. I finish by saying Tom Hanks get away from the directors chair and if you wrote this don't do it again please you are better winning Oscars

The Lion King (1994)
10/10
a shining star in the history of animation
17 August 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Personally I enjoy most of Disney movies but this one has a special place for many reasons. The main one is that it brings me back to my childhood, and at that time I enjoyed the movie so much. I even had the VHS in English and Spanish version. Then the film came out on DVD and I also bought it. When it first came out on IMAX for any reason I couldn't go to see it again so now for the 3D release I definitely was not going to miss that opportunity. And all I can say is that this film will be forever inmortal. At the theater that I went there were people in the mid 20s like myself singing the songs, repeating the lines, it is just something that you don't see everyday. About the movie, everything has been said before: it is just so perfect, so balanced, it is a treat for the eyes for its amazing animation, it makes you laugh histerically with lovable characters like timon and pumba, it has a lot of emotional moments (spoilers) yes mufasas death is very sad but what really gets to me is when mufasa gets into the stampede to protect simba that is just heart breaking for me its not the death itself but the events that occur before his dead. Also at the very end when Simba takes his place as king is just magical, powerful it gives me chills when the bones are washed away by the rain while simba listens the voice of his father "remember" definitely this is pure gold a movie for old and young and a gem that will absolutely will pass the test of time.

Green Lantern (2011)
7/10
the surprise of the summer
16 August 2011
when the first trailer of this movie appeared I thought that this was going to be by far the worst movie of the year. I don't like very much ryan reynolds in a leading role and the special effects looked very poor, at some point very close to ridiculous. The first 20 minutes of the movie got me into the story ( I was expecting nothing else than bad frankly) but this was a huge surprise. Characters are well developed, I liked so much when Blake Lively tells Green Lantern to take off the mask but there is a symbolism there since she talks about the mask of fear, there are very deep concepts in this movie, peter saarsgard is simply phenomenal as a villain and basically all the actors are amazing at their roles in the end it was worth it. Yes the special effects are poor sometimes and for that I would give a 4 but then acting script and pace are great so that makes a 10: final score 8

The Smurfs (2011)
6/10
come on¡¡¡ its not that bad
9 August 2011
I will start saying that I am not even a fan of the Snurfs cartoon and frankly I went to see this because I had nothing else to do. Also, to find out why IMDb reviews assured that this was a complete mess. And honestly,I ve seen worst, and this movie doesn't deserve a 4.5 score. We have to consider that this is a film based on a cartoon about a sorcerer that desperately chases small blue snurfs. What can you expect of that?. Of course is silly and not to deep. But this was not made to surprise the audience it was made for the older ones to remember the cartoon and the young ones to discover it. Now I find some positive thinks on the movie. Hank Azaria as Gargamel has a few good moments that at least made me smile, the art design of the village is colorful and well done ( probably could have been better if the story was developed in the snurfs world) in a few words give it a chance it is an enjoyable family movie

a dark subject beautifully filmed
4 August 2011
This is one of those movies that you normally don't know nothing about because there is not an expensive campaign to promote it. But from the first time that I saw the poster it kept catching my attention, even though I read some reviews saying that the movie was slow moving, confusing and pointless. Thats when I confirm the idea that you must go into a movie without prejudice, not based in somebody else opinion, otherwise you could be missing a good film like this. Performances are all great, photography is awesome (spoiler) the dream scene were Christina ricci rips her heart off is disturbing but somehow beautiful (end of spoiler), there is a lot of emotional moments, some other creepy and at the end ( like many said before) this movie allows the viewer to create his own interpretation, its not an ABC movie and its wonderfully told. Definitely worth watching.

Cars 2 (2011)
7/10
for an animation movie is great for a Pixar movie is just OK
26 June 2011
As many people mentioned before Cars is a movie that didn't deserved a sequel. I mean, talking cars is not the best idea to start with but somehow they managed to bring some emotions in part one. I remember that I was a little bored with the slow pace of the first Cars, but again they tried to connect the audience with the characters ( in my opinion McQueen is not a likable one). In the end Cars was good but it was missing something. Now, the sequel goes a completely different way, and first I thought that was a good and original move, but I also think that Mater has a lot of time on screen and frankly that is annoying ( it is the typical character that always screw things off but hey we love him because he has a big big heart and he will never let his friend down come on¡¡¡ that is so childlish and its okay for the kids, but we know that Pixar has made it to the top because they connect with kids and adults equally. Im not saying that you will have a bad time, because the movie its entertaining, but it lacks heart and genuine emotions. And that for a Pixar movie is just sad. Hopefully they deliver a better film next year.

the hangover part 1.1
29 May 2011
This is another movie that was just done because the first one made a lot of money. Every single element of the previous hangover is present. There are no surprises frankly. You alredy know that they are going to take things a little further in terms of scathologic jokes, nudity and some slight twists on the plot. Now if we keep in mind that this is a comedy I did not heard many people laughing out loud like in the first movie. Surely it has its moments, but most of them are already seen in the trailer. The characters still have some chemistry on screen but Zach Gialafanakis is not fun this time ( its more like annoying). In the end a very regular movie to watch on TV on a Sunday afternoon. Compared to this the first one might still be considered a classic in the future.

Guillermo step aside¡¡
29 May 2011
Lets start by saying that this film was written, produced and directed by Patricia Arriaga Jordan, sister of Guillermo Arriaga ( very famous for his scripts of Amores perros, 21 grams and Babel). When I first read about this film I was looking forward to watch it in the cinema but it never got a theatrical release ( or if it did it was very limited) Now, that is such a shame because this movie is in many levels superior to other films that get more attention just because they are nominated for Oscars. This is a simple story in its structure but very complex and deep in character development.

Its one of those movies that truly stays with you, every single element of the movie is there for a reason, there is not a single bad scene on the movie. Performances ( specially Marisol Centeno) are real, moving and bi- dimensional).

It also has the virtue of not letting you know how its going to end. You think you know, but in the end turns to be something different and absolutely beautiful.

In a few words, this is an excellent film, a must see for all the people that says that there are no good Mexican movies. Definitely deserves more recognition. Kudos to everyone for this wonderful film

Amazing: a 5th movie beating the other 4 by miles
11 May 2011
OK I have never been a fan of F and F series. First one was a good surprise, fresh and at some point original, 2nd one was really bad maybe cause vin diesel was not participating in that one but in the end it sucked, I never saw tokio drift and the last one was a mix of bad acting, bad plot barely decent action and some CGI effects that looked very fake. But OMG this one has it all, from beginning to end is great entertainment, nothing more nothing less. Its like having together the best parts of the franchise with a touch of oceans eleven and some action scenes that are simply jaw dropping. This is how all the past movies should have been and being this a 5th part that is quit an achievement maybe it is an exaggeration but for me this is the masterpiece of all the 5th parts. Definitely worth the price of the ticket and I cant wait to see it in blu ray and replay a few times the last half hour of the movie.

Drive Angry (2011)

walking out of the theater not angry furious
9 April 2011
OK I used to consider Nicolas Cage a very good actor even when he has a lot of popcorn movies which are pretty far from beign good. Even season of the witch was hardly critizised when it is not a bad movie at all ( at least in my opinion) But here definitely Cage hits the bottom I don't think he can choose something worst than this. It is so terrible that no matter what he does next it will still look like a masterpiece. I will admit that the first 20 minutes are great entertainment: Extreme violence, hot chicks and ridiculous dialogues sometimes work for me. But honestly, this is so exagereted and incoherent that you don't know if this is comedy, action, horror or just a big piece of crap that goes nowhere. I think that it could be easily the last option and by the way never ever consider watching it in 3d it will be the same horrendous movie just more expensive.

This rock has been waiting for me all my life
29 March 2011
Its such a shame that this extraordinary film was not a box office hit. Everything is set up perfectly. James Franco performance is really intense and moving, the script has wonderful lines in it, the way Danny Boyle makes us get in the characters mind is masterful, the music and the way it is used along the movie is just breathtaking, editing is also nothing less than perfect, photography was also beautiful. Definitely this is a complete movie experience with absolutely nothing to add or take off. A wonderful and moving experience that is worth seeing more than once in the theater and of course own it on DVD and/or Blu Ray. For me this is the film that should have won the Oscar over The king speech,The social network or even black swan ( which was my favorite until I saw this powerful and unforgettable film)

ID4 "plot" black hawk dawn editing skyline script and acting
12 March 2011
when I first saw the trailer of this film I was really excited to see it. I knew from the beginning that this was going to be just entertainment, nothing deep, nothing to think or talk about. So I went into the theater just hoping to relax and be amazed with exhilarating action. But honestly when I saw Armaggedon for example I thought well the movie is actually ridiculous but that didn't mattered because we have a good cast, some good jokes and pretty good visuals, its a movie that doesn't take itself so seriously. But with Battle.... its just ridiculous how director tries to make us believe that this is serious and dramatic film. If this was a film only about destruction could have been a lot better, but watching Michael Peña son crying for his father was just pathetic, Aaron Eckhart probably has the worst lines ever written for cinema. Seriously, after an hour I checked the clock about 4 times and that is terrible for a movie that looked like it was going to be the new ID4. I will finish this by saying that this is worst than skyline. Why? Well just because the budget was ten times bigger but in the end it is the same trashy propaganda for the "US army savers of the world" Michael Bay could have done a better job. I give it a 6 just because there were a few good moments.

very underrated
17 February 2011
Sometimes I feel there is some type of hate feeling to Nicolas Cage, no matter what he does there s always negative reviews saying that his roles are irrelevant shallow or just pop corn shows. Reading the bad reviews on IMDb I thought this was going to be a complete disaster, but frankly it was the opposite. Yes the story line is very simple and some of the special effects are like many people said before of a typical B movie but I don't think that this is necessarily a flaw. Nicolas Cage and Ron Pearlman do a great job in this one, the mood and the atmosfere of the movie is very dark some times ( specially at the end) and that is a good thing. Also the ending was a little unexpected and if you are willing to give it a try you can leave the theater talking about important topics such as religious fanatism, intolerance and self-forgiveness. Definitely worth a look.

not the average romantic comedy ( and thats a good thing)
25 January 2011
This is one of those movies that have a weird marketing campaign, the studio wants to sell it like a romantic comedy when its more like a drama with complex and real characters. Anne Hathaway and Jake Gyleenhaal have good chemistry on screen and secondary characters help to bring equilibrium to a movie that other way could turn to be a little depressing. I also think that this movie doesn't deserve the R rating just because it deals with sex ( I live in Mexico and here we have something like PG-15)hopefully people don't feel to uncomfortable with the sex scene because it gives more credibility to the story. In the end the film works better than others of its genre and its worth a look ( probably not for a first date) but if you are already on a relationship it will give you something to think and talk about.

lame..... but I laughed out loud at least 5 times
22 January 2011
The first thing that I knew about this film is that it is directed by Michel Gondry and I really enjoyed all of his previous work, even when this is a movie made and produced for the box office you can see the visual style of Gondry. Now,if this critic was based on the quality of the script, believable plot and likable characters probably I would give this a 4 ( there was a lot of times that all I could think was WTF? But frankly most of the recent comedies just make me smile but with this one I laughed until I felt a pain in the stomach at least five times. Im still laughing at the Pop-eye joke and the best of the best: ( You get the L I get the A that was just hilarious. The only problem with this film is that there is a lot of Seth Rogen humor so if you go to see this be prepared for a huge parade of stupidity. You will enjoy it.

the weakest of the series
29 December 2010
Even when the first two installments of Narnia were no masterpieces somehow Disney was able to produce entertaining films ( maybe not with the visual quality of Lord of the rings)but on their own merits they were interesting enough to watch. When the first trailer of the voyage... came out it seemed that this was going to be very different from the previous two ( and not necessarily in a good way) Today my suspicions were confirmed and I have to say that this is by far the less exciting movie of the Narnia series. The pace is very slow for a fantasy/action movie and at many points the plot seems to go nowhere there's at least half an hour when absolutely nothing happens and when it starts to get interesting guess what the movie is over. On top of that the CGI was very poor for my taste it was nothing close to spectacular. I was going to give it a six but in the end my vote is 7 just because I liked some lines and the ending was emotional and a bit surprising

Skyline (2010)

if these was a gore film could have been a great movie
29 November 2010
Normally when I read a lot of bad reviews about a film I run to the theater to see why everyone thinks that it sucks and let me tell you everything you read before its absolutely true. The fact that you have a 10 million budget doesn't give you the right to write a stupid screenplay thinking that the viewer is a lot more stupid. Seriously ( character hears a hard noise and says Hey I think there's something out there no s#$%¡¡¡¡) when characters are supposed to be worried or stressed they seem to be constipated they are so awful that you want them to be part of the sickest bloodiest Jigsaw game.

for that and more this is one of the crappiest movies of the century. The only positive thing is that sometimes the robots look cool and if you go into this knowing that is a better comedy than a scifi maybe ( just maybe) you could have a good time watching this.

a good bridge to the hangover sequel
12 November 2010
As everyone already knows this is the new movie from the director of the hangover. Basically this film follows the same recipe, but the big difference is that this one doesn't focus only in comedy ( which in most parts is very good) but also has a very well developed dramatic background that makes us understand why the characters are the way they are. The merit of the film is to create interesting situations in a plot that is no longer original and in the end get us to like a person that at first sight seemed in-mature and irritating. Yes it also has some scatological humor that may disgust some viewers but in the end is good entertainment. And the plus there are at least to dramatic scenes that put this movie over others of the genre. And the scene with the Pink Floyd song is worth the ticket

a lot of irony in the title
10 November 2010
the 4th film of Gonzalez Iñarritu is a very strange film. It cant be said that this is a bad movie for it has superb acting by Javier Bardem, good cinematography and a story line that finally takes a somewhat different way than the previous films. Nevertheless I need to say that the director needs to be a little more optimistic, I like depressing movies but I think that Iñarritu is obsessed with the dark side of human nature and yes it sounds contradictory but all he does is to film tragic situations in a beautiful way which sounds okay for one film or two but at this point it seems that the director needs to get a new source of inspiration. But at the end of the day I enjoy his work, the guy has talent and probably the best of his work is yet to come. Its a good movie but it could have been better with a 30 minutes edition. 8/10

entertainment at its best
7 November 2010
This is a great movie to watch if you are looking for good fun and entertainment. The cast is probably one of the best seen lately for an action movie and every one of them has a moment to shine on screen. Its true Bruce Willis is acting like himself in other movies but he has charisma and knows how to do his work. Morgan Freeman rocks no matter what he does and John Malkovich he really stole the show and had the most hilarious lines of the whole movie. When you see a movie that doesn't take itself seriously but its still manages to make you laugh and be excited about what is happening you know that you are getting exactly what you paid for. Definitely worth a watch and hopefully they continue bringing good action comedies like this.

Surely coming back to the town
7 November 2010
When I first saw the trailer it seemed like it was going to be pretty good movie. But this is not only good, this is an intense, dramatic and touching experience that surpassed my expectations by far. Ben Affleck used to be the pretty boy that started in popcorn movies such as Armaggedon and Pearl Harbor, but as a director he has shown tremendous talent. Of course the plot is not original but the performances of all the cast are terrific, action scenes reminded me the best moments of Heat and the way that the story is pulled together leaves you wanting more and most important you care about all the characters. There is no good or bad guys, simply very human people trapped in a concrete prison. This is for me one of the best films of 2010 and leaves me expecting anxiously the next Ben Affleck film as a director.

saw 3d the tedious comes to life
7 November 2010
I was expecting a lot of this movie. I've been a huge fan of the series up until the sixth installment and was looking forward to see how the story will end, but honestly it was not worth the wait. This is by far the worst movie of the year even for fans like me I think that this was only made for financial reasons. I seriously felt robbed as I walked out the theater. This is only recommended if you don't have nothing else to do. I guess the producers are the ones to blame. 3d was only a desperate measure to keep the people interested but it is terrible done. Secondly the screenplay seems to be written with crayons and doesn't add anything interesting to the story. It is so sad that the once interesting movie going experience has turned to a nonsense crap that left me disappointed
