I'm a big fan of Mr. Flanagan. However, I do believe this show is a miss for him.
Hill House was perfect
Bly Manor was meh but beautiful in its own way
Midnight Mass was exceptional
Midnight Club is just plain disappointing.
It's well written and the acting is truly exceptional especially coming from these young actors I've mostly never seen before. However, the directing is mostly flat and it's shot like a typical CW or Netflix teen supernatural show. It felt very derivative. The plot was also very predictable.
The stories the kids tell themselves were great on their own but the overarching story was very disappointing and basic as hell.
It's a big miss for Mr. Flanagan and all great filmmakers have at least one. This is his.
It's a good story for the acting and the written drama and themes are great. But it fails itself by being soooo similar to other shows of its kind and having predictable story beats.
Some will love this but I'm just not part of that demographic. It is what it is. I will still be looking forward to Fall of the House of Usher.
