Continuum (2012)
It has potential -spoilers-
Let me start off by saying I am a huge sci fi fan and constantly searching to see if the networks have picked up a good sci fi. So it was quite apprehensive when I stumbled across the first episode, because I had heard no hype whatsoever and showcase is a very hit and miss network.
The first part of the show is chaotic at best. You are thrust into a future version of our world, but instead of something completely outlandish, you actually find yourself thinking this could actually happen.
We are given very little back story, which is understandable as it's the first episode. But thanks to a nice piece of narration but the Sci fi great Tony Amendola, we are given enough to at least grasp the state of the world.
The acting seems a little stiff at the start, the lines seem forced but you kind of get the feeling that's how things are in this future earth. Everything seems so clinical and clean. It's not until you hit the ten minute mark when things start getting good.
Now as I said, when I came into this I wasn't very confident and had no idea what was going on. So when time travel popped up I thought, this is just another version of Life on mars. But things then kick into second gear.
The lead, Rachel Nichols (who looks gorgeous as a brunette) starts to come out of her shell some and we are introduced to another great and upcoming actor, Erik Knudsen. Which was a pleasant surprise for me because I am quite a fan of his work.
Without spoiling to much of the flesh of the story. The tall dark and handsome detective could have been dropped. He seems very cliché and shows up not long after a intimate moments between Erik Knudsen's character and Rachels.
Love triangle anyone.
You get a great sense of dread when the main group of antagonists start terrorizing the city. These guys are smart, skilled and deadly. What really gets you is that you can understand their point of view. Yet their methods are questionable, and then you can see Rachels characters point of view.
This is where the show really hits home, while on the surface it looks and feels like an action sci fi with hints of romance. Underneath it is really asking questions about us, humanity. The morality of decisions and showing that everything isn't just black and white. You have these people who take away human rights and then you have the people who are fighting for humanity, yet at the same time they are cold blooded murderers.
And the show even gives us a tasty little twist at the end.
All in all, this show looks amazing and has the depth to last many seasons. Whether they will play on the moral and humanity aspects more in the future or try to go more mainstream action is what will make or break this show.
It has potential.
Thanks for reading my first review...if you made it to the end xD
Touch (2012)
Pleasantly surprised
When I first heard Kiefer Sutherland was coming back to our small screen. I thought action, guns and explosions. That's what he's been typecast as over his years as Jack Bauer.
For me anyway.
When I first saw the trailer I was sceptical. I mean how many of us an admit six times out of ten trailers that are awesome tend to be quite disappointing features. Well this is not the case for Touch.
--spoilers below--
It takes an interesting idea about how everyone is connected which seems familiar but it's done rather intuitively. While you may get a sense of lost and other mystery shows I have to say that's not a bad thing. The story advances quite fast and if you don't know what the actors (mainly Danny Glover to piles on a truck load of mumbo jumbo in an amazing few minutes of acting) are on about you may get confused at mention of terms like Fibonacci sequence and quantum entanglement.
If you understand the terminology behind it, it becomes much more interesting. I was aware of every theory they talked about in the show and it made it quite interesting.
The acting was very well done for a TV show I must say. Kiefer never fails to impress, the young British man who lost his phone (long story) could have been terrible but the actor pulled it off amazingly. Kiefers son also plays the child prophet???? And it was nice to see Danny Glover again.
Ain't' he getting to old for this...you get the point.
Only person I was iffy on was the welfare worker. While she was not bad she seemed to overact a tad but I'm sure she will get it down pat.
All in all Touch left me wanting to watch more which has not happened with a Pilot in many years.
It might not be you're cup of tea with all the technobabble or people who can't handle outlandish stories.
But if you like a mix of suspense, family drama, possible romance and real life drama.
Touch is for you.
Thanks for reading my first movie review. Hope you still have you're sanity.
