Killer Tumbleweeds (2008)
Awesome
Tell me where the bad ratings are coming from, because this was the most fun watching a movie I've had in a long time.
The concept of killer tumbleweeds is insane. It's nuts. But the execution was do deadpan and unexpectedly insane that it's actually brilliant. The whole concept can be seen as some kind of satire, and as a standalone film it flawlessly imitates news media and features some really first-class, comical character studies.
All in all, I really enjoyed this movie. It was tongue-in-cheek horror, really first-class stuff. With the bad ratings, I expected something pretty lame and embarrassing. Instead I was impressed. Ten out of ten stars from me--one of the best films I've seen all year. And that little pup scooting away from the tumbleweed was seriously cute.
Final thoughts: if you like oddball horror comedy, you've got to see this. It's David Lynch mixed with Tim Burton mixed with true middle American. Love it!
Biohazard: Death Island (2023)
Not bad, entertaining zombie and mad science flick
I'm going to be honest, I'm a huge Resident Evil fan, particularly of the games and animated movies. So when Sony announced another movie, I was already looking forward to it--sea monsters, lickers, zombies--what could be better?
Now I will say, the pacing is a little slow. But the animation is amazing. This is definitely the best animated RE movie to date. As for the characters, it's good to see the familiar faces of Claire, Chris, Jill, and Leon back in action and working as a team. Not a lot of character development, but you don't really need it--in a story like this, the actions and interactions kind of speak for themselves.
The bad guy was fun. He had an interesting back story and was an cool character in and of himself.
If you love the games, you'll enjoy this movie. It certainly captures the spirit of RE4 and some of RE2. I'm looking forward to a film more in the vein of RE7 and 8, but until then, this was great fun.
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (2023)
Wasn't expecting this
I have to admit, when I started watching this movie I didn't expect a lot, even though I'd heard good things about it. But my initial skepticism completely dissolved as the story and characters developed. It's been a long time since I enjoyed a fantasy film this much, and I have to admit, the minute I saw THAT dragon (you'll know it when you see it!) I was completely won over.
The plot is compelling and genuine, and I love the dynamic between the characters. The events of their quest challenge each of the adventurers to overcome their various weaknesses. They're a flawed but entirely likable group, and their motivations are truly heroic in spite of their wayward tendencies.
Can I just add that with so much dark fantasy, it's so wonderful to see a fantasy film in which the heroes are actually heroes? Not cardboard heroes who are perfect in every way, but flawed, genuine, struggling people who really set out to be better than themselves, and fight for more than themselves too?
I wholly recommend this film and hope they make more!!
Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs (2019)
Unexpectedly Beautiful
I'm not really one for writing reviews, but the animation, characters, and story were just immense fun. I fully recommend to anyone who loves a good fairy tale. This was great and I can't believe I'd never heard of it until yesterday!
This movie is perfectly suited to an adult and children's audience. There's nothing too frightening, but it's certainly not so safe that it isn't exciting. The design choices are unique and really caught my eye, particularly the design of the mirror and the three little bears. And Merlin really is exceptionally handsome, although the point of the story is to look beyond that and appreciate someone not just for how they look, but who they are.
Charming story with a genuine message. Fully recommend.
