Fractured (2019)
Ending ruined it...
Starts off well. Most of the film is quite tense. Keeps you on the edge.
Worthington's reactions can be a bit aggravating at times but I can put up with that.
My issue was that the movie hints at two possibilities: he's hallucinating or he's uncovered an illicit organ harvesting operation. Given they let him go at the hospital, which wouldn't make sense if they were that hardcore, then it must be the hallucination. But I was hoping it wasn't. I was wrong...
So essentially the movies spends it time giving hints that he's being setup with a pinch of "he could be mad". At the end, you realize that it was all for nothing and he's just nuts. I was in primary when I wrote a story then at the end I wrote: "and he woke up and it was all a dream". I got a poor review from the teacher. Same here. It's lazy. And as usual for Netflix and most movie recently, it's depressing and unnecessary.
Dragged Across Concrete (2018)
Instant classic
Ignore the 1/10 reviews by most likely leftist, who are hating on some of the politics in the movie. This movie is a masterpiece. Only someone with deep pockets was able to put this together in the current Hollywood's P.C. totalitarianism.
Acting from Gibson, Vaughn and Kittles is stellar as expected. Supporting actors are also solid too. Great script that starts slow, but sets up engrossing characterizations. Slow paced, which is nice for a change. No Jason Bourne fast cuts here.
Story intensity builds up over time. Gets real engrossing. Some nasty stuff happens in the movie, but nothing as hardcore as Cell 99!
Best film of this genre I've seen in last couple of decades.
A Quiet Place (2018)
Finally a film with no misandry
Excellent suspense level throughout. Sound ambiance/fx really reinforce the atmosphere. Solid acting, even from the kids. Special fx were also good - the monsters didn't look like cheap CGI (impressive on a $17M budget). Would've liked more background on the monsters but that might've ruined it if poorly executed. Just enough maybe.
It's refreshing to see a non-dysfunctional family. A father figure that is caring yet a resourceful provider and a selfless protector. The couple works as a team, not some sort of feminist rivalry. It's quite beautiful to watch even if terrible things happen to them.
No unnecessary and distracting diversity either.
An impressive first movie by John. Hope he makes more.
Ready Player One (2018)
Boring SJW plot-ridden drivel
No I haven't read the book but I did have high expectations due to Spielberg. This film was just another repackaged turd like I'd expect from Michael Bay.
Too many plot holes to mention, (They might be addressed in the book but not in the movie).
Graphics didn't feel impressive. Just generic. No wow factor.
Didn't feel involved in the characters.
Why does Wade fall in love with this girl? There's no chemistry nor reason for love. Her vanishing facial stain doesn't hide her beauty so the whole "I still love you even if you're deformed" shtick doesn't hold.
The usual SJW propaganda: "diverse" cast, strong female lead acting like a man, wimpy male lead, evil corporation run by white man, poor vs rich, black trans character, etc etc
Somehow the government cops show up at the end to save the day from the evil corporation.
Hollywood IS the evil corporation. Are they projecting?
Downsizing (2017)
Leftist propaganda failing again at the box office
After social justice warrior flops like Ghostbusters and Star Trek Beyond, you'd think lefty Hollywood would stop ramming Bernie Sanders' manifesto down our throat at every opportunity.
Downsizing is another unsubtle example of a political agenda spoiling a what seemed like a fun movie - at least from the trailers. Here are some of the cliches you'll see in this movie:
* A passive, weak emasculated male (Jason Bourne yes!) being bossed around by a bossy women. A standard feminist trope.
* End of the world climate change nonsense pushed to an extreme.
* Communist-type kumbaya communes made up of Bernie Sanders' beloved Scandinavian social democrats
* Evil greedy hedonistic old white capitalist men who don't care about the planet or anybody by themselves.
* The poor diverse workers who are all enslaved to serve the above rich whites. They live in slums and die like flies and nobody cares.
* etc
I would recommend watching this movie to see so many of these leftist archetypes - it's truly a spectacle to witness.
Why is Hong Chau getting all these awards? She was terrible in the movie. Completely unlikable unrealistic character with a painful voice. We all know why.
Matt, please stay away from your preachy politics, and just go back to beating up bad guys.
Drive (2011)
Already a Classic
Golsing is outstanding. The soundtrack takes you over. The love interest is subtle yet powerful. The editing also adds to the experience.
I knew Gosling was meant for greatness.
I first saw him in the doll and the addict teacher movies, and thought he had some great presence. It was just a shame these films weren't for a wider audience. I hope Drive gives him that deserved recognition.
Carey Mulligan was also very restrained in her role. It complemented perfectly with Gosling's character.
The car sounds were also highly engaging. Reminded me of Ronin with De Niro.
Tomorrow, When the War Began (2010)
Drivel...
Pros: Good cinematography. Great scenery. Decent action sequences. Looks expensive for an Ozzie film, like a US production.
Cons: Characters are (really) irritating and gross caricatures. The gym-addicted guys are all wimps and the lead girl is a suburb-girl-turned-instant-female- Rambo. The romance sub-plots are just yawn yawn. The hot female-Rambo has a unexplained penchant for the silent/shy Chinese guy. The uber-hot blond thinks she's "ugly" because of mum issues... you know... while every guy in proximity is ogling and salivating over her.
These teens are able to successfully evade and fight heavily armed and trained military squads. There's no exploration about why the country is being invaded, or the fate of their imprisoned parents etc...
This is basically a pre-teenage girl's film, although there is some more mature violence... so it's a bit unclear.
Verdict: stay away.
