The Night House (2020)
Great movie if you don't expect horror
Definitely a grief drama/mystery. Not horror or thriller. But still plenty of creepy atmosphere in this emotional, personal story. The subtle and artistic depiction of "seeing things" was a highlight for me. It's more thought provoking than scare inducing, so don't expect crazy things to happen. But it's an enjoyable, little gem, creatively told. I would have given a 7.5-8, but to offset some undeserving lower ratings I boosted it to 9.
Tenet (2020)
Deliciously complex
Not as easily accessible as Inception, which may turn off some viewers, but for those who love an amazing mind-bending thriller, Tenet delivers and then some. I agree it's a movie that demands repeated viewings. Overall, I think I still prefer Inception, but this is right there next to it with a fascinating story that's not to be missed.
Maleficent: Mistress of Evil (2019)
Better than expected
With all the negativity surrounding this movie, and a trailer that didn't wow me, I was surprised to really enjoy this continuing story. I liked the first one better, but my wife actually preferred this one. More adventure. More serious and darker. Less emotional depth. Just relax and enjoy some family entertainment, and don't be so nitpicky. A worthy sequel.
In the Blink of an Eye (2009)
Mildly entertaining Christian cheese
I'm a Christian and love Groundhog Day. So, I was excited to see this. Yes, I was disappointed. Mostly because it is embarrassing unless you're already a believer.
As Christian entertainment it was an okay watch with a few good ideas, but overall it falls flat with poor writing and execution. It's not one to share with unbelieving friends as it does nothing to inspire or raise questions about faith.
When you have conversion scenes in a faith based movie, you want it to come from a real and genuine place. That did not happen here.
Full of potential, but drops the ball. For free on PureFlix it's worth one watch, but expect plenty of cheese.
The Diabolical (2015)
Very clever, not the greatest, but worth it
For a low budget film with its share of flaws, there is a lot to enjoy here with some creative twists. It's a movie you need to commit to thru the end and give it time peel away its layers.
Nothing earth shattering, but I've seen so much worse. It definitely earns a well worth the watch. It's probably a 5 star movie, but I gave it 7 for the clever surprises.
Not a bad way to spend 90 minutes on Netflix.
It Follows (2014)
Clever Premise, Poorly Done
With a 97% critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes and so many glowing reviews, this was a must see for me. Can that many critics be wrong? Or what did I miss? I love a good horror movie, especially one that is fresh and creative...unfortunately, this wasn't. For once, I agree with all the 1 star reviews. I almost turned it off when I was bored through the whole beginning, but I figured it just needed time to develop...it will get good. I was wrong. The filmmakers had a great concept, but squandered it in the execution. So many things didn't make sense that it frustrated me. The pacing was slow (which works when significant tension has been built, i.e. The Conjuring series), but here it just comes across as flat and dull. In trying to figure out what would happen next I found myself writing a better movie in my head. I can forgive some plot holes, stupidity and unexplained inconsistencies to a point, but I have to be entertained. I don't like finishing a movie and saying, "Why did I watch that?" I should have watched Lights Out for the 13th time.
