Road House (2024)
Contrived
A really very very bad film. When you remake one of the old greats, you really do set yourself up for a fall when it is this bad. And bad it is. Terrible acting, personified by Conor McGregor's woodenness. He is possibly the worst actor I have seen in a film for a very long time. Makes Steven Seagal look an accomplished actor!!
The first few minutes did show some promise, and that it could have done justice to the original. But the whole thing is far far too contrived. A strange mix of trying too hard to stay true to the original while stamping its own identity on things. And to me it just doesn't work.
Boring - really quite hard to sit through 2 hours of this - and really rather predictable. I know it is not meant to be the last word in sophistication, but it would be nice to have at least one word!
Obliterated (2023)
Drags on....
There are so many series out there, that would be far better if they had fewer episodes. This is one of them. I'm on episode 6 and feel a bit tired of the series already. The same thing repeated over and over, and no amount of sex and nudity can make up for this )IMO) shortfall.
It starts of as a good adult comedy, but the stretching out to fill 8 episdoes make things become all rather dull & puerile....and forced. But I guess it is made to be light hearted and to that end it does hit the spot. It's just that the same jokes are brought out time and time again.
Ultimately I guess this one rather depends what you expect from a series. Without being too judgemental, it is too basic & too assinine for me but if your thing is a comedy that doesn't have to get you thinking about it, then it might well be up your street.
The Grand Tour: The Colombia Special Part 1 (2019)
I am a Clarkson fan, but....
....this was utter garbage. Boring, repetitive and very little actually happened. To say that it was overly staged, somewhat misses the point in that it doesn't pretend to be anything else. But it was ridiculously asinine. The 2nd part looks a lot more interesting.
IO (2019)
What's the point?
It seems that this might have been made so that Netflix can have some original content. Maybe it would be better to have less content that is good, that lots of content that is bad. While some were unable to finish it, I managed to get through it by being on my PC doing other things. While I am sure that it will appeal to some, I would advise to avoid.
Slow, tedious, predictable and nothing happens. The synopsis that advertises the film, while I guess is accurate, really is promising much much much more than is delivered.
Croc-Blanc (2018)
Enjoyable.
I watched this with my disabled kid, and I think that I found it more enjoyable than he did. The classic story told in a great way to appeal to younger audiences.
I particularly liked the way that the more unsavoury subjects were covered, especially the dog fighting. Rather than ignore it for fear of upsetting people, to me. it was covered perfectly. Nothing too graphic.
True Detective (2014)
Very very hard to hear
I actually really enjoyed this. Generally I'm not really into series such as this, as I tend not to have time to watch them when they are aired, but this was given to me on DVD. Having watched it, I think that this genre, where a storyline can be explored and played out over 6 hours or so has great appeal (if on DVD!!) as there is time to develop a plot without making things so obvious for the viewer as is the problem if trying to squeeze into a 2.5 hour film.
The first episode was good, but the next two or three were a little slow, and then the last 4 were very good, if a tad predictable. Good camera work, arty enough without going OTT, a plot that wasn't unbelievable, good casting. The usual nude scene or two, which I never really think adds anything to the plot.
But the biggest complaint is not being able to hear and understand what was being said. Fortunately I had this on DVD and I had to use subtitles, which is absolutely ridiculous (but at least I could catch what was going on).
USS Seaviper (2012)
Complete and utter tripe.
There really should be a 0 out of 10 for films like this. I am presuming that this was a real life "The Producers" and made awful for tax reasons. The difference being that they really have made a flop.
The worst, most hollow and wooden acting (if that is what one can call it) I have seen in years. A high school play has better acting. The special effects are risible and in all honesty, it would have been better to not even attempt any as clearly making a model submarine look realistic is far beyond the capabilities of whoever attempted it.
Sometimes a film can be so bad that it has a certain attraction. But this film had no redeeming features and I couldn't endure all of it, and like others have said, those that have rated it highly must be associated in someway with the film.
