Chik yeung tin si (2002)
shu qi turned down Crouching Tiger to do this...good career move
Although Crouching Tiger betters So Close in every cinematic aspect, this action flick never fails to engulf its viewers through its sexy actresses and their ballet-esque kung-fu moves. The movie stars Zhang Ziyi look-alike Shu Qi, and Zhao Wei as sister assassins with a very powerful surveillance program (The World Panorama) to back up their bloody endeavors. On the other hand, who could blame these pint-sized killers when all they want to do avenge the murder of their parents as they ostracize the guts of murderous business tycoons responsible for the tragedy? They are constantly ambushed by the equally appealing Karen Mok as the persistent and tomboy cop who is willing to do anything to capture the deadly tandem. But dammit, the sisters are determined to do anything as well to kill all the greedy businessmen who murdered their folks to steal the World Panorama. With beautifully directed action scenes, So Close destroys the barrier that separates the Western Style of making movies and the ever-traditional techniques of the Far East. Of course with action flick clichés here and there (love conquers all my warm-bottled-water lover Shu Qi), the movie remains to beguile both action movie buffs and cinema-esque aficionados (If you love The Hours, this movie also has three chicks!!!)
The Matrix Reloaded (2003)
aka matrix retarded
The first installment of the Matrix proved to be very original, unique, and most of all, logical... you know? It actually made sense for the viewers. Alas, the Wachammacallit Brothers have fallen to their own trap they call a plot. No matter how many times you watch the first intallment, Matrix Reloaded will always seem to be a stand-alone movie- as if it Matrix 1 never happened. With the lack of background, and over-compensation for special effects, one would think that Matrix Reloaded has truly crossed the line for cliched movie making. But wait, it gets worse. The Brothers, with the help of scripwriters thought that it would be much cooler if all the people in the Matrix sounded like they were very intelligent. So as troubleminded as they were, they ended up with characters like the "Maker of the Matrix" sound cryptic and Morpheus as the cheesy version of Mandela.
Matrix Reloaded should have sticked to its already solid storyline from Matrix. And most importantly, it should have never been an action film that tried to pursue the dramatic flare and the intellectual aspect of the Englsih Patient. An action movie is an action movie... We have yet to see an action movie with a heart.
Hoi sum gwai 5: Seung cho sun (1991)
a cute trip for an asian movie
You can't expect too much from a low-budget asian film. But with that said, it was actually a good film as compared to other low budget asian films. The ever ubiquitous Kris Aquino spearheads this campy film along with relatively unknown chinese actors. Kris makes good of what little the movie offers by delivering a believable and squeaky-clean performance as a heartbroken ex dog-owner. When her dog Magic, gets reincarnated into a man by a Happy Ghost (God forgive the writers), her life turns into a love triangle with her new boyfriend getting fussy with the fully reincarnated Magic. But Magic has only 44 days as a human before he gets reincarnated into another fur ball. Will he be able to say what lies in his heart to his owner? bleh... All in all, the movie gave the viewers what they wanted. A fun, light-headed comedy without being pretentious. Maybe Matrix Reloaded can learn something from this.
