Ten Pound Poms (2023)
Interesting story of the past
I felt it was an interesting story although in the second episode, I know it's only setting up characters, but, there was a scene I found very difficult to watch. I'd like to say the racism and different attitudes are better and dramatic change has changed Australia but I can't fully back that. The acting is quite good and nice to see some interesting plot twists.
Seeing Australian period drama is always interesting. Being set about 10 pist World War 2, it takes a look at the British citizens who were shown a picturesque life in Australia only to find, what they referred to as, concentration camp style. Having to find employment and with their passports confiscated for two years, they desperately try to make a nice life for themselves but it's an uphill battle.
The Spanish Princess (2019)
Historical fiction on screen
Based on Philippa Gregory's book, I liked this adaption. I have been reading her books since The Other Boleyn Girl was first printed and The Spanish Princess indeed explains the toil of being a woman in Tudor times. The struggle of living up to a legacy of the Catholic Kings and the danger of the English throne are well detailed although poetic licence is evident in some of the storytelling. The actors did this script well and also recognising familiar faces. It's a shame there is no third season but hopefully more Philippa Gregory books will make it to screen along with Whit Queen, White Princess and now Spanish Princess
For fans of the books, I recommend this series.
Vikings: Valhalla (2022)
Poor leading actors
I found it hard to get into the story and stay interested when the lwad actors are not engaging. Just seemed like a rip-off show for fight scenes. Some of the linking story was ok such as Harald Fine Hair's lineage and the English rital lines... not sure i care about S2 if there is one.
The Angel of Auschwitz (2019)
Bear with it
It is based on a true story from the protagonist and Dr Mengele. Badly filmed with the sound and picture by amatuers but the story in hindsight is ok but in real time, the chopping and changing makes a bad cut.
If you bear with it, it shows compassion and love still existed in the most heinous of circumstances.
Cursed (2020)
Love this new fantasy angle
Set with the Merlin/Arthur legend, they are mere characters in this beautifully shot series with a nature sorceress at the epicentre of dark fairytale type story.
I really love it. Historical fiction, fantasy, action, bloody enough to entertain the blokes and despite it centring on a "teenage" character, it is far from a teenage show!
