Cobra Kai (2018)
Now this is how you do it!
As many others, I was positively surprised by how great of a show this was.
Staying true to the original story and the way the superb writers are faithful to their characters makes this show great. How they manage to evolve their own storyline works so well with the great acting. See it for your self. You'll probably be surprised.
Om natten lyver jeg aldrig (2020)
Bad? Think worse!
The story of the closeted Iranian in Denmark could have been a rather important story, but you'll not find it in this series with its forced dialogue and awkward premises that disturb the story so much that it completely loses its credibility despite Arash Mosaddegh's honorable efforts.
The series fails because its dialogue is so badly written. One feels that the premises of the story are stuffed down one's throat and the serie fails to show it instead of telling it.
In the first episode where the mother becomes suspicious of the extra mobile phone her son keeps and the dry workout clothes he brings to and from the fitness center, where he trains a badboy who caricatured portrays a stereotypical bad-boy who (of course) has prejudiced ideas about both immigrants and homos, are early clues that the entire series will be hard to watch.
You don't get sympathy for any of the characters in this series, because it doesn't give us the chance to. On the contrary, the dialogue, the scenes are often enormously set up in such an unbelievable way, that the viewer is never drawn or slightly interested or invested in the characters.
Because we as viewers aren't taken seriously, the series just becomes a montage of well-meaning bits and bites of an otherwise quite important issue. Namely, that immigrants in society who are not white nor heterosexual, to that extent, are overlooked and carry a heavy burden that is destructive to themselves and to us as a society. Had it only just contained a wee bit of realism, sympathy and some credibility, then we did not have to give up in anger and despair in watching this mess, but unfortunately the series does not manage it due to poor dialogue and lack of commitment to its own characters with a terrible script.
The material of the series is just too poor and the execution itself is just embarrassing. The series ends up wasting your time and not making you much wiser about anything other than a 20-year-old's notion of what it means to live in a parallel society as a gay man.
It could have been so good but rarely is a series this incredibly bad in every single way.
Outcry (2020)
Extreme justice
America has been telling you that the American Justice System is the best in the world. This myth is hard to kill.
Many scholars and many people outside the US are of course highly skeptical about this claim and have been for many years.
The American justice system is rotten to the core, filled with corruption and this documentary exposes the corrupt police and Texas Rangers and exposes a judiciary system that doesn't care about the individual American citizen.
This documentary is both frightening to watch and tragic to live with.
But it's a must see tv-moment for sure.
DNA (2019)
Badly written show filled with cliches and unrealistic dialogue and bad acting.
Have you ever watched a show and gotten angry over the character's idiotic dialogue and lack of credibility?
This show might be the worst in a long time.
The plot? Just dumb and unoriginal.
It reminded me of a TV show from the early years of the 2000s.
So many things are bad and you're left wanting to ask several questions.
Why wouldn't you introduce your characters to the audience and get them emotionally invested instead of telling the viewer what to feel and what to think about them and the storyline?
The show is filled with bad cliche dialogue and clumsy interaction between characters you don't get to empathize with. The characters are so bland and the poor direction makes the audience indifferent to them. As a viewer you don't get to be invested nor interested in the story or it's characters.
The plot is horribly unrealistic and seems rushed and forced. The plan seems to be tell the audience everything and spell it out instead of good directing where you show it and don't tell it.
You just sit back and wonder if there were ever a filmmaker going over the manuscript before shooting. It is amazing how horrible everything is.
Not even the plot's logic makes any sense.
Who leaves a baby in a pram outside on a boat in a storm?
What cop travels to another country based on a hunch?
Why wouldn't you ask the wife to stay home if this was so important?
And how, HOW is this cop so knowledgeable about this kidnapping that is established in the beginning without proper explanation?
Don't waste your time on this!
Herrens veje (2017)
A very unique series
At first I wasn't that invested in this show mainly because I'm not either Christian or religious at all. A few chapters in and suddenly I was intrigued.
The series of course evolves around themes as faith and God but it is so much more than only God and religion.
The show's about people, family, love, hate, despair, pain, human suffering and everything you could image about being a complex human being.
I fell in love with many of the characters but not before despising them and resenting their actions first.
The cast is so amazing that they with credibility portray their roles in a way that you really believe them and believe in them.
It shows the many nuances of a being alive and it deals with the many struggles of being a human being in a way I've never seen before in a tv series.
This show, Herrens Veje ( the lords's way or road -in Danish) has touched me nearly in a religious way (and I'm an atheist!) with its tone and it's dealings with the many facets of life -whether you are a believer in God or not.
The subtle yet deep portrayal of the human mind and the struggles of being alive dealing with death, depression, hate, forgiveness, love, is simply amazing. It's provocative. It hurts you, moves you. It's warm and loving. It's showing how to love. How to hate. And shows how to forgive and move on in times of despair and loneliness.
A very unique series, one of a kind.
A God's sent to my television set.
Killing Eve (2018)
Glad I found this show
This is a stunner!
Intriguing, fascinating, witty and clever.
Great story line and amazing performances from a great great cast.
Great direction, clever dialogue and intense and great acting.
It's highly addictive and very credible especially because of the well written plot but in particular due to the amazing performances by some really great and atypical actors.
This is a great first season. Can't wait for the next!
Tell Me a Story (2018)
Horrible show
It started so well but the show is so contrived and the plot is so excruciatingly obvious it hurts.
The only positive thing is that the cast is really good looking and the cinematography is okay.
The story, the plot and the characters are hollow, boring and it's hard to watch.
There's zero credibility in any of the characters and what they do and don't do doesn't make any sense most of the time.
The logic is horrible and because the story is poorly written you never engage. You only get angry about the whole thing.
A complete waste of time!
Date Night (2010)
Insanely entertaining
Tina Fey is without a doubt a very funny person. She just has that funny-bone and it really shows in Date Night. Steve Carell is also very funny and the chemistry between the two is very significant and indeed important for the film to work. And it sure works. Now could the film have been better and have had a tighter script and punch-lines? Sure. But the beauty of this film is that it is not funny to be funny per say. It's quite obvious that the crew has improvised a great deal throughout the film and it shows. So instead of "just being funny" it's smart and lively and it has a certain authenticity to it although its purpose obviously is to entertain and make people laugh. Naturally it follows the traditional ways of building a story and evidently it is quite American, but it works. I was definitely insanely entertained throughout the film, even when I saw it for the fourth time. I can highly recommend people to buy the DVD!
