Act of Valor (2012)
Great Accuracy, Oorah
Chest puffing bull's eye shots. Deep macho voices, efficient kills at their finest. The bad guy can try, but he ain't gonna beat no U.S. Navy Seals! Just can't happen. Besides, it would be too depressing. Drawing bad guys from all over the planet, the ultimate weapon is threatening the babies of Amurica. Amurica's finest to the rescue in all their spectacular glory and perfection. Trained beyond belief, calculated, focused, well equipped, brawny and never look back determination. Trouble is, the bad guy comes up just run of the mill. Where are their electric fences? Where are their night goggles? Where are their dogs to sniff out the Seals? The movie was a great tour de force of Amurican fire power and dedicated spirit, but I'm sure the "enemy" could kick a lot more but in real life. Also, Where were the drones? The radio controlled weapons? Furthermore, for every cartel leader or radical they take out, dozens or hundreds are lined up to follow. The Mexican gangs haven't been so successful because they are wimps. I was surprised the Mexican contact actually lead the Seals into battle. A certain suicide mission for what purpose? Is it a sense of valour, duty and honour to do this "battle" or arrogance, bloated ego and a misplaced sense of one's place in the world? When you're dead, you're dead. Life is precious.
Battle Force (2012)
Should have killed the movie too
It's better than a blank screen. Otherwise, stupid characters, predictable plot, bad acting, poor effects, generic sound effects, on and on. What happens when you run in front of the guy firing a machine gun behind you? You walk away. What happens when shots are fired at you? You put your hand on your head and wait for the fake sparks to go away. What happens when you see a "Nazi"? You grin and shoot three magazines worth of bullets from one. Really a pathetic attempt with an old story line. Don't pay anything to watch this one that's for sure. Your grade 8 film club could do a more convince job with wooden rifles. It would be a better investment to pay them!
Sacrifice (2011)
Been there done that
I gave his movie a 5 because it is fun to see local settings and the movie was generally entertaining. It combines well worn plot lines from the last 30 or 40 years. The suffering cop, the vigilante cop, the hapless victim trying to escape a world not of his choice, the innocent little girl, the nasty alpha female, the wannabe trying to follow big bad daddy and of course the ex military man become holy and our ace in the sleeve. Totally predictable. It would have been cool if Jet Li and Mel Gibson were going at each other, but this is B grade from the start. Riddled with clichés.. the mobster, the caddy, the camera angles, the stand-offs. If you live or know Toronto well and want to feel nostalgic, enjoy for the settings, but not much else. Oh there is some eye candy for both sides, again cliché!
Chase (2010)
Just like every cop
Annie Frost is an amazing cop. The things she does are amazing stunts. I can't imagine a single genuine cop doing any of the stunts she pulls. Giving orders to staff to jump and expecting them to leap at the snap of her command, like it would really happen. Talking about cases in public, waving guns around and more. She certainly is hot (maybe a bit scrawny) and can wear boots well, but come on, she ain't no Chuck Norris. The plot lines are totally predictable and rehashed from other shows. The technological feats are totally improbable. A US Marshall running around in a personal car that's a Cadillac? There are just too many stretches from reality.
