The Rider (2017)
Chloe Zao is a modern day Robert Bresson!
This is a very original film! Brady takes on a lot of heroic qualities in this movie. But his biggest one is his genuine and unconditional love for his sister.
Ozark (2017)
Cheap Breaking Bad Rip Off
I stopped after a couple episodes. Really over the top and a non-believable story.
American Hustle (2013)
All style. No substance
It looks like this movie tried to copy Goodfellas a little bit. In Goodfellas I felt empathy for a lot of the characters. In this one I felt zero.
The soundtrack was good. I don't blame the acting. I have scene much better films depicting the 70's. (Boogie Nights, Dazed and Confused, Almost Famous, hell even the Anchorman) American Hustle looked more like a costume party than having a real feeling for the 70's.
At times it seemed so silly that it felt like watching a SNL bit. In short, I did not care or have any interest in any of the characters in this overrated film.
Killer Joe (2011)
This dark comedy advocates domestic violence
This off beat film started out interesting with a white trash family planning a hit on their own Mother along with the ex-husband to get her insurance money. You have to suspend your belief throughout the film of why the MM character (Killer Joe) does what he does. The thing I found most disturbing about the film is that the Gina Gershon character gets caught cheating on her husband with the person the insurance money ends up going to. So this justifies Killer Joe beating her up and making her commit fellatio with a chicken drumstick with the husband watching. I'm all for artistic expression and free speech, but the message it will send to a lot of people is that women who betray their men deserve domestic violence. Why a established actress like Gina Gershon would play this role is a mystery to me?
A lot of people were raving about the MM performance. Any actor could have done it. He plays a NC-17 version of a John Wayne. It was a one note performance.
When the Iron Bird Flies: Tibetan Buddhism Arrives in the West (2012)
Excellent documentary about Buddhism
This documentary explains Buddhism in very simplistic terms and follows the stories of a diverse group of practitioners. It would be great for beginners or experienced practitioners or anybody curious about Buddhism.
It really explains the four noble truths in an easy to understand manner.
I took away the acronym POSH from this documentary.
Perceptions are inaccurate. Ordinary thinking leads to suffering. Subtle discontentment is part of everyday life. Happiness is letting go of attachment to our ego.
Last Summer (1969)
It holds your interest but falls flat.
None of the characters in this movie are very likable. The two guys in it seem spoiled and rather wimpy. Barbara Hershey is young and beautiful and claimed to have this high IQ where there was no evidence of this. The 3 main characters seemed naive at an incredible level that unless they had brain damage it was to hard to believe. Other than smoking some grass there was no talk of anything that happened in the 60's. (Viet Nam, The Draft, Student protests, Music)
It seems today that even bad movies in recent years cover teen issues, sexuality, and peer pressure much better than this film did. It falls flat with no build up to an anti-climatic ending which ends in a very mean spirited manner for not much of a reason.
