Curtin (2007)
More about Australian History
I saw "Curtin" the other night on the ABC, and I loved it. It gave me a good look on why Australia is what it is nowadays. It is important to say that I am originally from Venezuela, and that I've lived in Australia for 6 years now. I work for the Australian Film Industry and it has become to my attention how little the government spends on it, and I tell you it is very disappointing. Especially when you hear that the Howard Government wants to make people like me, who want to become Australian Citizens, take a test. And on the other hand they do not promote the creation of programs like this, which not only entertain but also teach a little about Australia. I found this show to do both, it gave an inside look on the formation of the country where I have chosen to live my life and start a family. It is a know fact that Television, Films, Newspapers and the Internet are the grand communicators and for better or worse these are also educators. In my opinion it is a little hypocritical to make people that legitimate want to become Australians take a test, some of this people like me, freely chose to live here, and I repeat "chose" we were not born here, we were not brought over as kids, we chose to be here because we identified with this country, and whether we know who Donald Bradman was, or what a Billabong is? Should be irrelevant. The point is that we need to see more of these types of shows; I am really looking forward to seeing "Bastard Boys" about the waterfront war involving Patrick Stevedoring and the Maritime Union of Australia (MUA). And not only people from overseas should see this, Australians too should see this types of shows, we all should read about this on papers and the internet, discuss it with family and friends, create a dialogue to form our own opinion, teach each other. And to the person in charge we should say " NO TEST, MORE CONTENT".
The Departed (2006)
To our fatefully departed
I just finish watching The Departed for the second time, and although I rarely ever write a review here at IMDb I felt compelled to put my thoughts into words and share them. I believe TD is an excellent film. Seeing Leonardo grow into himself an play an amazing believable character as an rat with a conscience is amazing, good on him. Nicholson is amazing like always, trowing coke at hoos !!!! jajajajaj great ! Even good ol Marky Mark plays a deep caracther ... you hate him at the beginning but at the end he delivers .... 10 point to MM. And last mr. Damon is alright, I don't really like him that much so the fact that he plays the real f... at goes very well, good on mr Martin for a tremendous job, or should I say in a common term in these section... a tour de force !
Fortune (2009)
Gripping
I saw the final cut for this film at my work, and I have to say I was very satisfied. It does not stop, it has very good dialogue from beginning to end. Its is very well written I have to say, an amazing production from first time director Peter Scarf. Keir Dullea does an amazing performance and Cohen is simply great. The story changes, and it is like the main caracthers are playing ping pong with each other, really amazing to watch. It is set in NY and this really helps to believe the story as you can really find anything and anyone in this great city. It was edited by one of the legends of Cinema, Tim Wellburn, who does a great job in putting the story together, and regarding the pictures, it looks beautiful ! Watch it whenever it is released !
War of the Worlds (2005)
WoW, a summer blockbuster
I saw War of the Worlds last night on a midnight session here in Australia, I have to say that i was very exited to see this film and could not hold my excitement for the first 20 minutes. In this first act Spielberg sets the story well, his shots represent perfection, you can see from the very first shot of the film how well constructed it is. Then we start seeing how a dysfunctional family (a Spielberg classic mode) deals with each other until a "storm" comes in. An alien invasion !!! OK I really wanted to see the tripods, and yes they look cool, yes I wanted to see mayhem and I got a little of that, yes I knew what the story was all about so I knew at the end humanity prevails, but ... I know a film must not try to recreate reality, but represent a reality, I know that there must be suspension of disbelief and that we should all relate to the hero of the story and see it unveil trough his eyes, but it all seemed to fake for me, too staged, the hero finds answers to his choices too easily, the director made it too easy, I do not think they let us time to think. And there are scenes, like the one with that other famous actor that seems out of tune. Overall, I did not like it, I'll wait for the DVD for the special features and try to understand it with the commentaries, perhaps ...
