Heat (1995)
25 years later and it's not aged one bit. A total classic
I remember being 14 and my dad taking me and my younger brother (12) and sneaking us In to watch it. Even then I understood I was watching something special , made by people that cared about the craft of cinema. Since 1995 I reckon I've seen this movie over 100 times, and I still watch it 2/3 times a year. De Niro and Pacino are phenomenal, but also are surrounded by a top notch supporting cast. Stand outs include Kilmer , Ashley Judd , Tom Sizemore and Amy Brennerman who bring really depth and emotion to smaller roles. But really every single person is at the top of their game. It's Easily Mann's best film, (The Insider, Miami Vide and Collateral are other amazing pieces of cinema ) , the score and the LA locations are just perfect and really add a sense of scale and intensity . This film deserves a new generation to marvel at its greatness. They don't make cinema like this now ( which is a shame )
Bad Boys for Life (2020)
Back to basics for this superior sequel
With Emotions at the centre , this is a action movie for 2020. The chemistry between the leads has already been established and worked on so well it feels familiar but also fresh. You can tell everyone wanted to make this film and worked collaboratively. The ending is brutal and exciting as well which sets up for more , should we want it ( of course we do)
Saw this in Dolby Cimema in Leicester Square and now own it on 4k. Smashing film , and proves Hollywood can make great sequels when it actually bothers to try
The Gentlemen (2019)
Razor sharp script
Richie's best film since snatch. Hugh Grant gives his best performance. He is simply brilliant , funny, little camp, but deadly. Go and watch ASAP.
Ford v Ferrari (2019)
Puts my faith in the movie business again
This is what cinema is supposed to be! Amazing chemistry and acting by both leads, seamless CGI and practical effects to enhance the film, a firecracker script, a true story, pulse pounding soundtrack, booming sound mix, and edited so well that 2.5 hours flies by! Completely and utterly engaging . So good in fact I saw it twice within 24 hours . Once in Imax and once in Dolby cinema .
The Morning Show (2019)
Aniston's best work
Watched the first 3 eps last night. It's brilliant ! Timely and emotive, but funny and well paced as well.
Reece Witherspoon is always amazing in everything thing she does and she seems to pick really great material and this is no exception. But Jennifer Aniston is the real reason to watch the show. Her movie choices often haven't shown her acting chops in the best light but this is totally her best role . It's really meaty, and well written and she is playing a real character with flaws who I'm excited to see develop. Tv is definitely the place to come these days for great acting and Story telling. Ignore the "critics " this is damn good television !
The Irishman (2019)
Just amazing
Classic Scorsese . De Niro is the best he's been for years . Pacino is really magnetic and charming . But for me, Joe Pesci is the standout. Quietly deadly, magnetic , loyal, complicated, its him that will get the Oscar . Saw it at the cinema ( sorry Netflix but I am not watching Scorsese at home ) and it was superb.
Oh Anna Paquin is used quite cleverly as well. Good actress . Decent performance
Go and see it at the cinema . You will remember the masters returning for one last ride
Gemini Man (2019)
Feels like a 90s action movie ( in a good way)
Pros . Great acting by Will Smith, excellent action , engaging story, and interesting premise with some interesting moral discussions .
What's not to like.
( no where near as bad as reviews made out)
Long Shot (2019)
Better than the trailer makes out
Saw this at the cinema , As love Seth and Charlize ( for completely different reasons ) and I saw intrigued to see them in one movie.
This is one of the best Rom Coms in recent years. The two leads have genuine chemistry and it's actually funny. Rent it :)
The Equalizer 2 (2018)
Great performances
Average sequel elevated massively by amazing performances by Denzel and his young sidekick. Their story is the most interesting one... and one scene in particular really taps into an emotional story that is
Lacking in the rest of the film.i Almost wanna see a tv series about the two characters so they can develop and explore it further
Maniac (2018)
On eps 5 now. It's brilliant.
Watched 5 eps today . It's really well acted , and directed . Emma Stone is of course incredible and has the flashiest role and she's given the most to do.
This is a very good Netflix Series. Not a over hyped one. Give it a go.
Love, Simon (2018)
An ordinary but important movie .
So some context before my review , I'm 38 , British , and a gay guy. I wish this movie had been around when I was 17/18 and completely mixed up. All I had to relate too was Queer As Folk ( the Uk tv series ) and that was not relatable to me at all.
I think the secret to Love Simon's success is that it's authentic with well rounded characters that are relatable to people . The film is lead by Nick Robinson (Jurassic World ) who turns in a fantastic performance with subtle nuances that make Simon a well rounded character.
This isn't an indie film , no one dies of AIDS, or sleeps around , there's no tragic accidents, it's just perfectly normal .
It reminds me of 10 Things I Hate About You in that it's smart and insightful and very touching ! Go and see it :)
