I Am Legend (2007)
The shortest 100 minutes ever
18 January 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Man, this has got to be the shortest 100 minutes movie I've ever seen -- I left the theatre feeling quite unsatisfied. As you contemplate at the conclusion of the film what you've just watched, it suddenly hits you: "Hey, that's it? Where did my 100 minutes go?" Now, allow me to elaborate on this. Basically the film can be broken down into a series of brief flashbacks about events in NYC before the outbreak of a mutant-making virus (turning ordinary humans to scary blood thirsty evil men-mutants) along with the following main sections:

1. Guy and dog shuffling around a deserted NYC hunting deers for food.

2. Dog makes a mistake while chasing a deer and enters a door into a dark apartment building where the savage and seemingly indestructible UV-allergic men-mutants typically live. Guy goes inside, fights evil men-mutants and saves dog. Also, guy ensnares one mutant-lady for mutant-making-virus antidote trials.

3. Guy and dog shuffling around the city again. But this time guy makes a mistake, falls for one of his own planted booby traps, gets strung up upside down on a rope, knocks his head and falls unconscious. Dog barks for hours on end to wake guy up, but to no avail. Guy regains consciousness near sunset, but too late as the bad mutant-men and their mutant-mutts come out to play. At the end, beloved dog is bitten and severely injured by the mutant-mutts. Returning home, dog is turning mutant due to bites and guy reluctantly kills beloved dog.

4. Guy goes on a night suicide mission to avenge death of dog. He gets totally creamed by the men-mutants and almost dies. A mysterious UV-flashing stranger comes to the rescue and drives guy home.

5. Guy meets the UV-flashing lady saviour and her boy companion, have chit-chat etc. Men-mutants track guy, lady and boy to guy's house and ransack the place. Guy, lady and boy get trapped in guy's basement laboratory behind a powerful glass barrier. Mutants slam themselves to glass to break in. All accidentally see that the last trial antidote is working on mutant-lady guinea pig. Guy knows he must sacrifice himself to save lady and boy. Guy takes blood sample from mutant-lady, passes it to the lady, and asks lady and boy to leave via a tunnel/crawl space through the wall.

6. Guy takes grenade, pulls the pin, charges at the mutant-men and KABOOM while lady and boy make it to safety and a human survivor compound with the precious blood sample of mutant lady guinea pig. All is well and the human race is saved. HURRAH. The end.

That's all there is to it. I think there simply wasn't enough plot or story for 100 minutes. Overall, still mildly entertaining, but left me wanting more, a lot more...

Score: 6/10

The Loop (2006–2007)
Unfunny and pathetic
2 January 2008
This has got to be one of the most unfunny and pathetic US sitcoms I've ever seen. I think the main problem here is the uninteresting plot and the terrible and amateurish acting. The show seems to depend on sheer (forced) goofiness for laughs rather than funny, yet intelligent, situations and witty dialogues. I was initially interested, but after seeing one or two episodes, I hated it. Or could this be due to a cultural factor? That because I am not American I am unable to appreciate the humor? I don't think so, since over the years I have enjoyed and appreciated plenty of American (and also British) sitcoms. In fact, US sitcoms have always been my favourite. Now, a bit about the acting. I feel a lot of it was quite over the top, most noticeably coming from Eric Olsen, Sarah Wright (her cuteness doesn't help much here) and Philip Hall. This sitcom played for a while in Australia (I think a few weeks on the Seven network) ), but didn't last very long -- Thank goodness for that. I suspect it may soon get axed in the US.

Underworld (2003)
Nice, underrated movie
4 February 2004
Warning: Spoilers
I am surprised to find that at the time I cast my rating, this movie only got a 6.3/10. I think it is actually much more entertaining than that. First of all, this flick has what seem to be novel ideas in it, in particular the introduction of a kind of "kinship" between humans, vampires and werewolves (referred to as Lycans in the movie). I don't intend to give away spoilers, but let me just say that there is a really surprising twist in the second half of the movie. When you go through the first half, you think that the plot has been given away too early. But to my delight, this was not the case, due to the surprise twist I mentioned earlier. The story can be viewed as a metaphor for racial conflicts and prejudices that exist among humans and it pictures how senseless hatred is borne from generation to generation through cover-ups, deceit and misinformation, and how heavy sacrifices have to be made to bring end to conflict and reach some peace agreement or truce. The action sequences in the movie were also quite decent, although not quite up to the standards of movies in The Matrix trilogy. Kate Beckinsale is absolutely perfect for the role of the female vampire Selene. I must say she looks stunning in her movie hairdo and she is totally hot in the tight black vampiress latex attire. Bill Nighy (who recently played Billy Mack in the feel good X-mas movie "Love Actually") has also been aptly cast as the powerful vampire overlord Viktor. He plays convincingly as the hate-mongering bigot of a leader who is willing to do anything to perpetuate the enmity and hatred of the vampires towards the Lycans. The only weakness I found in this movie is the rather anti-climactic ending. But, highly recommended nonetheless.

I give it 8/10.

Liar Liar (1997)
Really funny but terrible ending
31 January 2004
I love this movie... it's absolutely hilarious! I couldn't stop laughing the first time I saw it. The gags and lines are very funny and simply brilliant, and Jim Carrey is superb! I am not a fan of Jim, but this is one instance where I really enjoyed his performance. I've gone on to see this movie 5 or 6 times and it still manages to make me laugh my head off! The only disappointment is the ending, which I thought was too far fetched and bordering on being ludicrous. But everything else just seems perfect. One of my favourite comedies of all time.

Recommended: 9/10 (would have given it a 10 if not for the pathetic ending).

Helluva crappy, embarrassing and soporific comedy
28 June 2003
It was a Saturday evening and my friend, his wife and I were planning to watch Bruce Almighty. Unfortunately, the tickets were already sold out. After some quarreling we finally agreed to watch something else, so Anger Management became our choice, beating out Phone Booth. The ads that were playing on TV made this movie seem worthwhile, boy was I ever so wrong! As it turns out, the whole plot is stupid, senseless and predictable. It is supposed to be a romantic comedy but it isn't very funny! OK I admit, I did get a few laughs but I emphasize the word FEW. Overall, the movie is very boring. After the first half we had a break and my friend was very reluctant to return for the second. In fact, he turned rather psycho and was pretty miffed at me and his wife for persuading him to watch this movie. It goes to show what a dose of a bad movie can do to a person! I was feeling reluctant myself, however since I had already sacrificed some dough for the tickets, I thought I might as well endure the entire movie, praying things will improve. I have never walked out of a movie in the cinema before, this should have been my first.

Basically, the premise of the movie (i.e., anger management) is promising, but in this film the idea is executed in a rather childish and unintelligent manner. My impression is that it is intended for kids and pre-teens, like one of those many Disney films, or for people who regard buffooning and making stupid gestures or loud noises as being funny. Not many humorous situations or funny and witty remarks to be found here, no sirree. If anything positive can be said is that Heather Graham looks particularly stunning and there is one scene where she strips down to her bra and panties, if you're into that kind of thing. She almost removes her top but she doesn't, if she had that would have been the highlight of Anger Management. I feel embarrassed at the thought of how people can make a film like this and convince themselves that it is a funny and a worthwhile production. My friend was extreme and thought it should never have existed at all! I also cannot comprehend how people like John McEnroe (former tennis star) and Rudy Giuliani (former mayor of NYC) could contemplate making a cameo appearance in this embarrassing crap.

I read some of the other reviews and to my amazement there are people who genuinely think that this is a good movie and there's even one reviewer from Romania (or somewhere in the Balkans) who thinks it is one of the best comedies to appear in some time. Geez!!!!!!!! Unbelievable. If you are looking for an entertaining romantic comedy, Anger Management will disappoint you. Avoid it for the sake of your mental health.

3/10 (2 for the movie and 1 for lovely Heather Graham)
