Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin (2022)
Lots of fun!
Hardly any spinoff is better than the original, but what I like about this show is that it doesn't seem like it's trying to be. It maintains certain elements of the OG that give it the heart of Pretty Little Liars, but adds it's own soul. That's what I think makes this spinoff so much better than Ravenswood and The Perfectionists were.
The acting is not the best at times and moments of the show are sometimes cheesy, but that's the case for the original, too. I'd venture to say even moreso in the original. I love that the cast is almost all newcomers and the very first episode had me hooked. Definitely will continue watching and I hope it continues to impress!
Charlie Charlie (2016)
A bad film with a silver lining
The concept of this story is amazing! The idea of a failing haunted house owner trying to save his business in a last ditch effort is really cool.
Unfortunately, this film was marketed falsely as a Ouija film when it was a completely separate story. The direction was questionable and the main actor was not good.
The only redeeming qualities about this film are the cool location and some of the acting performances. The girl who played Sarah was really good and I loved both the actress and character of Gina. Such a good performance with what she was given. Sadly, all of the actors had stupid lines and were not given much character substance to work with. Great actors lost in a bad movie.
Paranormal Activity 4 (2012)
Tired of ignorance.
I think part of the reason PA4 got such low reviews is because it was reviewed by people expecting an Alfred Hitchcock/Wes Craven/John Carpenter masterpiece, but it will never be that, and it shouldn't be.
The whole franchise is a refreshing concept
- families recording during the hours we all fear most, the hours when we are helpless to the evils of nighttime. The characterization is spot on. The language and slang Alex used was a bullseye with how we teens talk today. The relationship between Ben and Alex was extremely believable as were all of the families relationships with each other. We all know movies exaggerate and just to find actors that didn't overdo it (besides the mother..) is already a few points to the makers.
The plot is brilliant in my opinion. The first movie began the story, the second film continued, the third film prequeled the first, and this one picks up from the very first one. It's great because they've already given us the beginning and this was the middle so all we need is a new installment for the end.
As far as the filming style, the filmmakers were smart enough to know a 15 year old girl wouldn't be installing professional cameras in her home. The Mac laptop web-cam thing is very believable and it seems some were confused and didn't get that she wasn't carrying her Mac around. Only her web-chats with Ben and the nighttime footage was web-cam. The rest was her hand-held camera or iPhone (which is seen several times).
Overall, if you open your mind and go in without super strict expectations, you'll enjoy it.
