Moon Knight (2022)
WOW!
Not what I was expecting but so SO good!!! Oscar Issac is incredible. I was trying to avoid another subscription...but gave in because I was curious about a few shows. I didn't get Disney+ for this but it alone is worth a subscription (cancel afterwards if you don't want to watch anything else but moon knight is truly worth a watch). At a time when all the marvel/Disney stuff sticks to the same formula and is predictable.... this is really unique and entertaining.
It's Split with super heroes. Oscar Issac also does an incredible job showing his range as an actor. I hope to see more with him. Disney please make a season 2!
Argylle (2024)
Great date movie - Fun over the top cheesy spy goodness
The cheesy corniness is over the top I couldn't stop laughing it was wonderful! I'm trying to avoid spoilers but the actors leaned into the cheese and I loved every minute. Do not go into this looking for a profound spy movie. Do go into it if you love movies that jump the shark and have over the top scenes with insane unrealistic action sequences that are just fun and corny but satisfying plot. And the lead real world spy plays his role with heart - totally charming & annoying (in a good way) simultaneously.
Recommend this movie as a fun date movie with a lot of charm & corny cheesy action fun.
Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire (2023)
Unoriginal but not for the reasons you think
Unoriginal but not for the reasons you think, my critique has nothing to do with star wars analogies or even the fact the CGI looks like something out of a Sci Fi original series from the late 90s, or even the weird mesh of viking meets Hobbit meets blade runner meets Nazis... all of that "could" have been a fun but weird ride if it had a story to back it up.
My criticism is the story is not the right story for the show it was put into. This story has been told far better, far funner, and with more heart than Synders poor rendition does it justice.
There are 7 samurai rolling over in their grave. Even the Pixar version with bugs had more heart - IYKYK .
One Piece (2023)
Absolutely a treasure!
Wonderful adaptation of a classic manga. For non readers/non anime fans - give yourself 2-3 episodes (the style is true to the comic)...it may seem all lighthearted and kiddy...but trust me there's great stories lying beneath that goofy Luffy grin.
I LOVE how the random details are just littered throughout. The characters are exactly the characters I fell in love with! For those who want to try out manga or anime, or were curious about one piece (but maybe intimidated by the episode count) - this show is a beautiful adaptation.
The actors did an amazing job of staying true to the characters. The writers (THANK you for not ruining this classic).
Please π make MORE Netflix.
Black Adam (2022)
Great fun!
Is it the most profound movie ever? No. Is it a fun Anti-hero movie with action, the Rock & introducing a key Shazam universe character? Yes.
Great soundtrack & great job letting Adam be brutal to the bad guys. Let's just say you could make an amazing drinking game out of everytime Adam kills a bad guy.
Only downside was the justice team (only Fate & Hawk we're tolerable) and part of me really really wanted Black Adam to go full "Omni-man" from Invincible on them...but unfortunately this wasn't R rated lol.
All in all good family action flick - just keep in mind Adam is not Superman so Bad guys get way more gorey ouchies.
House of the Dragon (2022)
Beautifully written
That sense of impending dread (no one is safe), the beautiful writing and intricate family dynamics coupled with incredible visuals. It's definitely Westeros - this could surpass GoT (as long as the writers keep this up and avoid Starbucks coffee cups).
The pacing is perfect - just the right amount of action and suspense. Of course they managed to cram everything that made GoT incredible all into the first episode (plots, intrigue, violence, death, gruesome, tragedy, sexposition, even some foreshadowing...and of course DRAGONS.
The lore foreshadowings and family history dynamics are a *chef's kiss*. The writers do a wonderful job of showing the viewer the messiness without falling into the trap other show writers have (ie trying to tell the viewer how to feel). Because of this focus and attention to detail - it's a rollercoaster of emotion...
The Sandman (2022)
Brilliant adaptation of and incredible story
Gaiman did it! He adapted his story into a condensed (and less hard R-rated) version! The changes feel natural and don't take away from any of the characters or their development. I can understand the reason they were made. The characters gave me literal goosebumps! I found myself hiding behind my hands for the Diner (I was so scared I was worried I would get through that episode...but it was less horrific than the comics). The sound of her wings and the story of Hob (I'm πππ)
Thor: Love and Thunder (2022)
Fun - don't take this movie seriously it's Thor
It's pretty in line with Ragnarok Thor - I enjoyed it. Yes there were cringe jokes, yes it was EXTREMELY random (like Monty Python high on THC listening to 80s rock Random)....but it was fun and sweet. Christian Bale was so creepy (like don't bring tiny kiddos level of scary ) but I loved him as the villain. Some of the heavy splaining backstory scenes recapping the Jane storyline were a little tedious but I understood why they did it (Thor 1 came out years ago, but w/ the recaps you didn't "have" to see it to follow the plot). The ending was super sweet and was fitting. ... And goats πππ (note I was not a fan of the 2nd Dr Strange movie...but the new Thor would be worth a rewatch w/ friends to get a reaction π).
Dune (2021)
Loved it! Hopefully we get a part 2!
Great job building up the world, cultures and setting up the first half of the book. The only thing that I had issue with was the use of bagpipe music with some of the scenes .... for some reason I found it just jarring and a little funny lol. I understand why the director did it (contrasting the culture of Caladan vs Irakis ...but it didn't really feel like it fit the tone ). Other than that I loved pretty much everything else. The acting was incredible, the visuals gorgeous, definitely see this in a theater!!!! You need to get the full scale of everything on the big screen.
Masters of the Universe: Revelation (2021)
Who is this for?
1) it's not for fans of He-man - he's gone after ep 1. - Kevin seems to actively hate this character, writing him off screen ASAP
2) I loved Teela (& loved the idea of her finally becoming Man at Arms). It would have been wonderful to get to ACTUALLY see her in the role. But the role is gone by ep 2. And couldn't stand to watch her beyond ep 2 - the sheer whineyness is just stupid.
Maybe it gets "better" but I'm not going to waste time on something that isn't fun to watch.
I'm a fan, I'm a woman...I feel like Kevin was just churring out a quick poorly written sequel to get money for Clerks.
Army of the Dead (2021)
Exactly what it needs to be
A zombie shoot em up. Yes it's heavy handed for the metaphors...but still it's awesome π one of the best new zombie movies in years imo.
Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
It doesn't fit with the other movies at all
Worst Star Wars movie everπ I'm a huge fan of the original trilogy, this was just pandering crap. It's apparent that Disney did not have a cohesive vision for these 3 movies... and WTF with that ending? (No spoilers but Ben was the best part of this movie and Disney ruined that by the end of it.) Rent do NOT pay for a movie ticket. There are only a handful of movies that didn't "draw me into" them where I wasn't able to forget that I was in a movie theater watching a movie.... This movie didn't draw me in at all. I found myself counting the minutes praying it would be over.
