Dev Bhoomi (2016)
Sorry and biased story telling
Before you call me a misogynist nazi, read the full review.
The movie is called dev bhoomi; evidently the director has depicted how he perceives that to be in Uttarakhand. Its based in a village in which almost everyone is nasty. If you've ever been to any part of Uttarakhand you'll know that this potrayal of mountain people is extremely biased and nefarious. There's almost no aspect of rural Uttarakhand which he thinks is remotely dharmic, and yet he calls the movie dev bhoomi. While his craft is passable, his understanding of India and her people is ignorant at best, and sinister at worst. Don't get me wrong - India isn't a bed of roses and I don't expect it to be delivered that way. Just don't pretend to show reality when you don't even try to see another side of it.
Kapoor & Sons (2016)
Decent take on the emotional strains of a modern Indian family
A decently written plot about how the unsaid things between a family precipitously unravel, with the ensuing heartbreak and reconciliation. The turn of events isn't unpredictable, but it does weave in well together, and feels nearly genuine. Rishi Kapoor and Ratna Pathak are, naturally, the best actors, with Rishi Kapoor marginally stealing the show with his adorableness. There's more manipulative background score than one would like, but hey, it is an Indian drama. The on-the-whole commendable screenplay will play out uncomfortably for most members of the senior generation so I recommend that you show it to your parents. A couple of unnecessary dance sequences, some shitty dialogue ("You are a good man"), and two hours later, you find yourself having laughed, nearly cried, and feeling both the dysfunction, and the catharsis that the characters experience. This film is more of a hit than a miss, and especially relatable for anyone dealing with familial relationship heaves. It seems Dharma Productions has indeed grown up.
