The Simpsons: Barthood (2015)
Excellent, outstanding episode (at last, after so many disappointments)
Woow! How can I describe this episode? It's just what I was waiting for, after those mediocre recent seasons. It's not a parody, but kind of an adaptation of Academy award nominated and winning movie Boyhood, and if you liked that movie, sure you'll love Barthood, a touching episode full of humor and soulful moments.
This episode adapts Boyhood's coming-of-age plot to Bart's life, from his early childhood to his adulthood, and all the troubles of it, especially because he feels he lives under Lisa's shadow, and he also feels he have to fight for his parents' attention and approbation.
"Barthood" has so many remarkable things, but to me, the most endearing is Bart's relationship with his grandpa, and the fact that, after being so disappointed with his dad, he takes Abe as his paternal figure. Really engaging. And, after all, Bart finally managed to have a pretty good relationship with his dad and his clearly- superior-in-every- way sister Lisa, and at the end of the day, his life is really nice.
This episode has just the right amount of feels (but never gets corny), humor, gags (even the couch gag is impressively funny and original). It's really a breath of fresh air for the Simpsons and for TV in general, and I don't really want to say more about it, because it'd ruin the nice surprises. I'll just say that I've seen this episode three times. That's how good it is.
Just one more sentence: you gotta watch this Simpsons' episode.
Paper Towns (2015)
Interesting, really funny at times but overall, disappointing
First of all, I have to say that I'm a HUGE fan of John Green's books. I've read 4 of them, and I loved all of them. So, I read Paper Towns, and I loved the story, the characters, the metaphors and the gags. I went to watch the movie with high hopes of a good adaptation, because, in spite of some changes, I really liked the movie version of "The Fault in Our Stars". But PT
Well, I kinda enjoyed it; the characters were round and well developed, the movie included some cool gags from the book (like the t-shirt with the Confederate Flag, and when Ben had to pee during the car trip and he did it on a can)
But there were too many changes from the book that I couldn't help but notice, and every time I noticed a major change from the book, I felt kinda angry
From the beginning to the end, the main story looks more like a free adaptation, loosely based on the book; for example, in the book, at the end, when finally Q finds Margo, his friends stay with them and Margo speaks with Lacey, and then with Q in a field, not in a restaurant. Later, she speaks with her sister. In the movie, Q gets so obsessed with finding Margo that he argues with his friends, who want to go back to Florida to the school ball; they leave him and Q finds Margo on his own. This and other MAJOR changes really made me mad. Although this flick gave me some very good laughs, I missed the profundity and the metaphors of the book, and I feel like I watched a shallow and decaffeinated version of the book. TFIOS, with all its faults (no pun intended), was way better as an adaptation of a teens/young adults book.
Doragon Bôru Zetto Fukkatsu no 'Efu' (2015)
Very enjoyable movie. A success for the Dragon Ball franchise.
I just saw ドラゴンボールZ 復活の「F」 (Dragon ball Z: Resurrection "F") yesterday, and I had doubts about how good it was going to be, because the last one (Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods) really disappointed me. But I was pleasantly surprised of this flick. Let's start with with the good things: the animation was great, there were really memorable characters; it had the right amount of humor; in the Latin American dubbing, they used the original actors from the series (Mario Castañeda, Rene Garcia, Carlos Segundo, etc), and that was a really good plus point. I loved seeing the villain Freeza back, and the fighting sequences were excellently done. Also, they used the original theme song from the series, and that bring bring back memories to the nostalgic fans of DBZ. But (yes, there are some butts), I didn't like some things. For example, some dialogues felt strained and unnatural. I hated when the fight scenes were cut and instead of the fight secuences, they put absurd scenes with Beerus and Whis eating ice cream. That parts didn't contribute to the plot, and were unfunny. Also, some things seemed like a Deus ex Machina intervention. But overall, I liked it. Really. I highly recommend this movie. But if you're not familiarized with the DBZ series, you will not understand things from the plot and in-jokes.
31 Minutos: La Película (2008)
An ingenious and amusing adaptation of Chilean show "31 Minutos"
This movie is based on children TV Show 31 Minutos, with the beloved characters of the same. The premise of the story is simple: Cachirula, a crazy collector of animals is obsessed with getting the last of the species "Juanín", so she decides to kidnap Juanín Juan Harry, the humble assistant of the news program 31 Minutos, and she sends Tío Pelado to kidnap him. Meanwhile, Juanín Juan Harry is blamed unfairly for bringing shame to Tulio Triviño, the news anchor. But it was all a trap organized by Tío Pelado to achieve Juanín kidnapping. When Tulio and Co. found out of the scheme, they all went to rescue Juanín from the claws of the evil Cachirula. In sum, this movie is full of funny gags, witty phrases and visual wonders. Could it be better? Yes, but hardly. If you don't speak Spanish, you are losing of a great movie in all respects.
Coneheads (1993)
Not excellent, but pretty funny
I recently saw "Coneheads" on TV, and, though is silly, sometimes has pleasant gags and funny moments. It's the story about a family of aliens who come to the Earth to reconnaissance it, and soon they are adapted to the life of America and its customs. But Mr. and Mrs. Conehead still yearn their native planet, though they had done a new life on Earth. As I said, this movie has great moments, but gets flat on the stretch. Not the best work of Dan Akyroyd, but it's still enjoyable. A funny quote: Beldar Conehead: An owner's manual to a Ford Lincoln Mercury Sable. Highmaster: Ford Lincoln Mercury Sable? Beldar Conehead: A personal conveyance named after its inventor, an assassinated ruler, a character from Greco-Roman myth and a small furry mammal. Highmaster: Ah.
Salvando al Soldado Pérez (2011)
A funny Mexican action-comedy movie
When I thought there were enough "narco" (drug dealers) movies, I saw the trailer of this movie... I believed there was something special in this movie, and, though I was wrong, anyway I had a funny time. This film deals with the typical Mexican stereotypes: drug trafficking, immigration, family values, etc. All in all, this film is a set of different hilarious gags, gags that perhaps a foreigner couldn't understand. The performances were pretty good, specially Miguel Rodarte (as Julián Pérez, the typical Mexican drug dealer), Jesus Ochoa (as Chema) and Gerardo Taracena (as Carmelo,a tomato farmer). As I said, this movie features numerous gags of physical humor, puns, and stereotypical characters. It is not a smart movie. It is not a movie with a message. It's only a funny movie for people who just wanna have a laugh. Anyway, this is one of the best Mexican films I've seen in recent years.
Braindead (1992)
A funny, gory film by a crazy genius (Peter Jackson)
I was looking for something gory and macabre... and on internet I read about Braindead. I started watching it online... and I couldn't stop laughing and puking at once. Funny, original movie about a lonely and sad boy named Lionel, and his misadventures with his mom... When he met a pretty girl, Paquita, he thought everything would get better... And naturally, everything got worse, when a rare rat monkey bit his mom and turned her into a horrible zombie. And if that wasn't enough, his mom bit other people, who bit other people, and soon there was a zombie army... Everything seasoned with lots of blood and viscera. My review:A must see. But if your stomach is sensitive, avoid it.
The King's Speech (2010)
An inspiring biopic movie!
Outstanding! A movie you must see. I saw it online, (yeah, I didn't have enough money to buy movie tickets), and I definitely loved it from the beginning to the end. Well, I'm Mexican, not very informed about British history. But before i started watching it, I read a little about king George VI, so I watched the movie with further information about the King and his inspiring story. One of the things I loved the most about the movie was the performances of Geoffrey Rush and Colin Firth, both great actors. And also, the historic context of England in the 30's, the king George V, etc. Historically correct, inspired and inspiring, with great performances... The best movie of the year, and in 40 years, it will be a classic.
Justin Bieber: Never Say Never (2011)
Justin Bieber: Never Sing. NEVER
I only saw this movie because my little sis is a Justin Bieber fan and she asked me to go with to her to see the movie But, only 10 minutes later the movie started, I wished to be dead. This is a movie (If it can be called movie) made to promote and give even more fame and money to Justin Bieber. When it finished, I felt like I stupidly lost an hour and a half of my life. Everything I hate about a movie was there: Silly, Corny, pink, pointless, painfully long. Of course, my sis (as well as all the other girls between 8 and 15 year old that saw the movie that day) loved it. But I just hated it. And also other adult people whom I asked their opinion. Any adult and mature person would agree with me: Justin Bieber: Never Say Never is an ultimate form of torture.
