Subtle, engaging, under-rated
10 June 2015
I wanted to review this movie because it was such a nice surprise to enjoy it after I had avoided seeing it due to the low rating here.

This is a really original movie, with solid performances by the lead actors. From the IMDb summary you know the basis of the film, whats original about it is it does not focus overly on the negative - depressing themes etc. Due to the characters being in a low income, 'poor' demographic of society, so many movies are made with a view of looking down, pity, there is something wrong and these people need to change.

This film is very real but not negative or depressing. It shows that just because a couple is not living the American dream, it does not mean their lives don't include fun, love, laughter etc regularly. There was no bullshit in this movie, no 'Hollywoodness'. And I liked it. Its so good Matt Damon and Naomi Watts take on films like this.

I'd rate it a 7, but give it an 8 here to boost the rating!

Just not that funny
24 August 2013
I was really looking forward to seeing this after the 7.2 rating on IMDb, and also being a fan of Horrible Bosses that had both Jason Sudeikis and Jen Anniston. I'm always keen for a quality mindless comedy to have a laugh and not think for a couple of hours, but this just didn't do it. THe script was predictable and seemed forced, the jokes weren't that funny (apart from a few), and the two lead characters were boring and annoying. JS character was just annoying and not funny, and JA character was tired, we've seen it before many times. These guys just going through the motions. The two younger characters were pretty good, but Ed Helms support character I just didn't buy either, mis-cast in my opinion. I did laugh a couple of times early on in the movie but I then left about 2/3 through as it became hard work and i prefer to have that time enjoying some fresh air rather than waiting for the movie to end being all too aware that I was not enjoying it. Wait for the DVD.

Better than expected...more of a comedy/drama
22 April 2013
After reading the reviews here I avoided this movie for a while, then was happy I tried it. Its not a straight comedy and not a typical Seth rogen movie. It has comedy, human drama, and a mother-son story which is pretty meaningful and pretty smart I thought. Most parent child movies focus on father son or mother daughter, but here is a likable comedy with believable and very real mother son challenges. I expect only son's with a single mother will very much relate to this and warm to the story. I'm not sure how this was marketed in the States but probably a mistake by the marketing people to pitch it as a real light hearted comedy. Better than I expected, keep an open mind and don;t have expectations and see what happens.

Excellent, unique, rewarding film experience
28 July 2012
This is a really unique film, its very intriguing most of the way through and once more of the story becomes clear it is then also intriguing to see how the story will end.

I don't think i've explained that well, its difficult to describe. It's a film for those who enjoy going deeper in terms of thought and emotion, and ultimately seeing the spiritual path in life and how love plays a big role. And Love is not always what we first think.

It's a fascinating movie, very well made and acted, and the music and cutting in and out of scenes works very well and serves to deepen the experience and make it more rewarding. It stuck with me, warmed my heart and left me feeling hope and a sense of inner joy.

Great - if you liked the book
23 April 2012
This movie was good - thought provoking, touching and inspiring. I really liked it however i acknowledge that it will divide people - it's really for those who've read the book and respond to the authors message. If you relate to this and are interested in knowing more about Neale Donald Walsch's story, there's a good chance you'll be pleasantly surprised by this movie. I was. I thought it was well put together, gave due attention to the different parts of the authors story, didn't play him out to be some savior or evangelist and wasn't sugar coated. I don't agree with the infomercial comments, and I'm Australian and we have little tolerance for infomercials and cheesy sales pitches. Obviously its not a big budget movie and its more about the story and the message for those that hear it.
