Frenemies (2012)
I Don't Even
Okay, I won't lie; this movie made me chuckle a few times. But at the end of the day it was stupid, trashy nonsense and I'm not just saying that because it's a film aimed at kids. You can watch much better movies with your children. I'd even recommend "High School Musical" over this garbage.
Some of the messages it sends out are bizarre. Best friends are great and all but are you really going to let friendship get in the way of a huge career opportunity? And why did the first mindless tween let his dog get in the way of a relationship? Granted, it wasn't a very healthy relationship, but who knows how many more times he's going to put his dog before actual people? And as for act three... well, I don't even have to go into that. It was a total rip-off of "The Parent Trap." This film is a cliché storm and compared to this, "Camp Rock" looks like "The Godfather." By all means, skip it.
LOL (2012)
Skip It
Pretty terrible movie overall. Demi Moore is, from what I've seen, a semi-talented actress and this movie is just the opposite of what you'd expect from her.
Where do I start? The character of Lola is so unlikable and unrealistic... when, in this movie, does anyone ever call her "Lol"? Her boyfriend is a total cliché and I can guarantee you that no teenage boy in high school acts like that unless they're at the bottom of the food chain.
Please skip this film if you're looking for something enjoyable. It's a little ironic that a comedy titled "LOL" will never make you laugh out loud.
Odd Girl Out (2005)
I'd Pass if I Were You
I was a little younger when I first watched this movie. It was about bullying and how catty girls could be; being a huge fan of the movie "Mean Girls", I decided to rewatch the movie with two of my other male friends a few days ago, thinking I would be impressed. I was not.
I definitely wasn't expecting this to be a comedy so I was looking forward to some real intellectual drama. What I got instead was an average performance by most of the actors and a very melodramatic script with stereotyped characters.
The mother was actually fairly realistic and her acting was undoubtedly better than anyone else's. But still, her character isn't original, because we've seen the same Mom in dozens of high school movies. Another flaw is that the film's antagonists seem to have nothing else to do with their lives other than making Vanessa miserable. It's not an accurate portrayal of high school because the mean girls aren't just mean; they're borderline evil.
It's not a terrible movie but I'd never recommend it to anyone. I can see how it might appeal to some people, but it's just too over the top for me to enjoy. I would recommend watching "Mean Girls" if you're looking for a good movie with a strong message. If you're looking for something dramatic, try "Cyberbully".
It isn't much better than this film but the acting is far superior and the protagonists are much more likable. But to be honest, I wouldn't really recommend that movie ordinarily, either.
Greta (2009)
'Greta' Should Be an Anagram for 'Spectacular'
This movie was, simply put, amazing.
The things that the producers were able to do with very basic plot was incredible. It's basically "Georgia Rule", but much better.
Greta is a sarcastic, pessimistic, rebellious teenager that has been sent to live with her grandparents over the summer. During her trip, she learns more about herself and the people around her. As I said, basic plot.
But the acting was amazing, the humor was solid, and the compassion in this film was heartwarming. I can't stop watching this movie; I don't understand why something like this isn't in the theaters, but a movie like "The Last Song", which I didn't particularly enjoy at all, managed to gain a wider range of viewers.
This movie is deep. And it's funny. And it's really well-done. I don't know what else I can say. It's a definite ten for me.
