House of the Dragon (2022)
What a snooze fest!
Three stars for sets. Was so looking forward to this, but no. Just NO! It is so dull, and all they talk about is the throne. The time jumping? Bad choice. Boring casting for the most part, and Matt Smith is just such a poor choice. He is such an overrated actor and I just want to laugh every time you're supposed to be wary of him. Also, he walks like he's been on a saddle too long. The writing is sub par, and if you watch the episodes in On Demand, where they have interviews with writers, producers and show runners after the episode, they are often condescending and talk about viewers "paying attention". I would if you'd written a decent show. Four episodes in and I am not remotely Interested in what happens to anyone of the very uncharasmatic characters. Unfortunately for them, GOT came first and I was hooked from S1 Ep1. This show pales by comparison, and there's no way not to compare. Buh-bye dragons... Zzzzzzzzz...
Virgin River (2019)
Watching S4...
I've enjoyed each season to varying degrees, but entertaining enough to come back for each new season. I am discovering that, as I suspected, I enjoyed last season more without the missing-due-to-Covid, Annette O'Toole. She's back now, and OMG. She was maybe an average actress back in the day, but nobody can overact a scene like her, and I have to FF through any scene she's in if I'm going to make it through the episode. I'm hoping she's a very nice person, so she has that going for her, but she is a drag on this series for me. The Mel character used to have more pluck and strength, but that appears to be waning. The cinematography is gorgeous, and good music is woven in and out, including closing credits. Not a waste of my time, but getting lower on my list of things to watch with each season.
Outer Range (2022)
Won't waste any more of my time
What a snooze-fest. Boring writing, with far too many annoying characters (Autumn #1 on that list). As time has gone on, the newer episodes drag on and on. The characters are pretty uninteresting, nothing new, and there isn't one character I care to learn more about, so what is the point? Good luck to them, they'll need it.
Fixer Upper: Welcome Home (2021)
Okay...
I've seen most of their original series on HGTV, and now the first three new episodes on their Magnolia Network. Chip Gaines has grown increasingly juvenile. His childish antics, verbal and physical, have just become so tiresome, and primarily time filling; not contributing to the content. I'm sure he's a talented builder, and luckily there is at least that. Speaking of talented, Joanna seems to be a talented designer and has good vision when it comes to remodeling. But OMG, I am so tired of the whites and creams! :( Just watched the episode (S1 E3) where the young woman asked for a European cottage look. I've lived in Europe for years. A brick paver floor, a few wooden doors, and a couple of arches does not a European cottage make, with all of that white and cream! Looked very Scandinavian, as so many of their interiors do, and it just isn't fresh or new any more. The young woman was very happy, but then this is her first house with help from her parents and certainly more of anything she'd been living in up to that point in her young life on her own. Kind of goofy background music as well, that doesn't seem to fit the content and can be distracting. Yes, we know you're in Texas. Really was hoping for a new vision, evolved choices in color, but seems like more of the same and it's disappointing. I'm certain they don't care what I think on IMDb, but it's my honest opinion, nothing more, nothing less. They will be just fine, and still a big deal in Waco, and fans everywhere. I wish them well.
Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts (2022)
Perfect, except for one thing...
I loved everything about this special, from cast members who returned, those honored in memorium, to behind the scenes retrospects, and the joy they all had in seeing each other again. The three main actors still genuinely regard each other affectionately, and not a tragic child actor story in the bunch. But for me, I felt it was a real shame they did not mention even once the gorgeous soundtracks provided by the brilliant composer, John Williams. The first few bars of every movie gave you goosebumps and the ride was on from there, and throughout. So iconic, and so very integral to the telling of this story from beginning to end. A missed opportunity...
Modern Love (2019)
Season 2 far better than Season 1
IMHO the second set of stories were more interesting and better acted. I actually almost skipped watching this next season because I was so bored with the first. Also think there were just plain better actor choices in Season two. Nice work!
Men in Kilts: A Roadtrip with Sam and Graham (2021)
I really enjoy these two gentlemen, but...
Okay, I'm fairly obsessed with Outlander and have been since it's debut in 2014. When what started out to be a proposed podcast by Sam Heughan evolved into a road trip with Sam and Graham filmed for a series I just loved the idea. But after viewing episode1, I'm afraid I was fairly disappointed. It felt as though they try to have too many venues in one episode and rush through those venues too quickly. And the banter if scripted wasn't particularly well written, but if "off the cuff" felt almost forced and uncomfortably so at times; like "hey, we'd better have some clever, witty banter between us because we're great mates". As much as I love Outlander, when there is only 30 minutes to cram so many locations into those 30 minutes I don't feel clips from Outlander was necessary. Listen, no one is more surprised at this review than me, but it's what I went away with. Here's hoping the next 3 1/2 hours are time better spent. My fingers are crossed!
**Five episodes in now, and still feel pretty much the same. This show isn't horrible, by any stretch of the imagination. I'm just disappointed, and for all the reasons stated above after E1, as the episodic formula has remained the same.
The Undoing (2020)
Pretty good mystery so far, but...
We're four episodes in. I've enjoyed the writing so far, and good acting. But honestly, I am way too distracted by the all too many close-ups of Nicole Kidman and whatever she has done cosmetically to her face. It is so distracting that what ever scene she's is I quickly start thinking of that. Pity she felt she had to continue to go that route, and now this time it's overdone. Apparently she doesn't think she can go the, let's say, Diane Keaton route, and age gracefully. I'll continue to watch because I've got my theories about "who done it", despite the annoying distractions.
