Play Dirty (1969)
Bitter Ending
29 September 2003
This movie manages to build tension better than almost anything I've seen in the last five years. It does well to carry the piece with such thoroughly unlikable characters. The ending is definitely something special in its own right.

Another perfectly good book butchered by the big screen.

Once again film makers succeeded in ruining a well written novel. Sebastian Faulks' novel featured a genuine depth of character and wrote realistically of wartime conditions and relationships. This film butchered the plot, ruined the characters and altered the story beyond any point where the film might have carried some of the novel's qualities.

You'll laugh your tits off.

I saw this movie by accident, the local news paper made a mistake in the listings but by the time my two mates and I had driven out, found a park and walked to the movie theatre we didn't want to turn around and go home without watching anything. Despite the fact that the three of us would struggle to turn up a single Italian word between us we all laughed ourselves silly through the subtitles and decided that this movie is an absolute ripsnorter of a film that any aspiring comedy writer can and should learn from.

Obsession taken to a conclusion.
28 July 2003
Warning: Spoilers
Firstly I have to admit that I'm somewhat biased about this movie as I walk past Juliet Hulme's old house, the one where large parts of the movie were set and filmed, about 300 times a year. Minor Spoiler: I have also fallen off (while drunk) the bridge that Juliet is standing on when Pauline first visits her at her beautiful home. This is a fantastic movie that brings alive the fantasy world of Juliet Hulme and Pauline Parker/Reaver as their obsession with each other grows and eventually lead to the murder of Pauline's mother. Peter Jackson's inimitable vision and imaginations make the girls fantasy world appreciable for the viewer. The murder scene is appropriately horrible and is devoid of any stylisation which makes the murder seem believable mundane and painful.

A maddened binge of debauchery and puppetry.
28 July 2003
Most people who give this movies poor reviews do so because they completely miss the point of the movie. It is solely meant to be good for a laugh and a spoof. I agree that much of the plot wouldn't work if it was done with people and not puppets but that seems to be part of the joke. On the other hand don't expect to enjoy this movie if you have ever argued in favour in censorship.
