Friends (1994)
The most over-rated sitcom of all time possibly
It is quite simple. Friends is a comedy of very basic humour aimed at teenagers and young adults, with unsophisticated sense of humour.
It is also painfully obvious that towards the end, they were desperately trying to make it last 10 seasons, most likely so they could say they beat Seinfeld's 9 season run. The trouble with this is, Seinfeld had 9 amazing seasons with great writing, Friends had (and I'm being very generous here) at most 5 or 6 OK seasons and then 4 abysmal seasons.
It became a soap opera with recycled humour and recycled character traits that weren't that good so start with, then got worse at the 100th time you saw them. I find it so hard to understand why people rate this so highly. It is truly awful.
The Mighty Boosh (2003)
Funny but not THAT funny
Don't get me wrong, when I've watched it, I've laughed. But honestly... It's just a craze and it's a little irritating that people jump on the bandwagon. The nation have found something they like and just like Ali G it will be great for a year or so then everyone will realise it's just stupid humour, with no real staying-power. I feel the same about Little Britain.
Personally, I think people should be raving about Curb Your Enthusiasm and Arrested Development. Ironically, both of these are American shows, which aren't usually anywhere near as funny as British shows. However, these two are. Boosh is immature humour, which although I admit I love, I find I can't take it in big doses, just like immature people (and I do include myself in those, which is why I try to water down my personality at times!) Put it up against comedy greats like Blackadder, Extras, Alan Partridge, Garth Marenghi's Dark Place, etc... and it starts to look pretty average.
American Pie (1999)
It is the defining teen/college comedy of the new generation
I think anyone who writes a bad review of this film must think that they are 'above' this style of humour which the film uses.
All I can suggest to them is that they eat a slice of 'humble pie' and realise that being immature is actually great fun!
This is without a doubt the landmark teen comedy of the new generation. In the late 70's, Animal House was the one that officially started it all. Then, in the 80's, Fast Times at Ridgemont High was the landmark teen comedy. Then, in the late 90's, came American Pie. It took us into the new Millennium with two more installments which I would rate as highly as, if not better than, the original! Now, I am looking forward to seeing what the landmark teen comedy of the 2000's is!
There is a pattern that seems to have emerged... Each landmark film makes at least one of its cast a star. Animal House made John Belushi a cult legend (and Tim Matheson also to an extent), Fast Times made the film careers of multiple actors who today are household names (Pheobe Cates, Judge Reinhold, Sean Penn to name but a few), and American Pie gave new found success to Sean William Scott (and also gave Jason Biggs some star status). And that is just a brief overview.
Its a true comedy gem and it will definitely go down in the film history books with its name etched next to Animal House and Fast Times at Ridgemont High, among other classics.
Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers (1988)
Possibly the best Halloween sequel there is
The trouble with this film, is that a lot of people had it in their mind they were going to hate it before they even saw it. This is probably, in large part, thanks to the 3rd installment and possibly even the 2nd.
But if you actually sit down and watch it without thinking about whether or not you will hate it, I can almost guarantee you, you will think that is is one of the best slasher sequels there are.
Obviously not as good as the original, Halloween 4 is more of a tribute to it. Something which was long overdue in my opinion, what with the awful Halloween III.
I don't get scared by horror films as a rule, so when one comes along which keeps me on the edge of my seat, I know it must be good. This film did exactly that. The film had some flaws, but overall kept within the shadow of the original, rather than falling completely out of it like the third film.
I think it is probably the best Halloween sequel there is. Some may argue H20 was better, but I am not so sure.
Bottom Live (1993)
Its just the feckin' bollocks!
Ignore the user who slated this. Its just pure brilliance. And if you don't get it, you obviously don't have a sense of humour. Also, Rik wouldn't refuse autographs. Ade may have done, but Rik is a really nice bloke.
