Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021)
A truly unique transformation of a terrible movie - once in a lifetime occurrence
This truly is a different movie from the first Justice League release. While this movie still suffers from terrible dialogue and not a great plot, it's a truly unique experience and far superior to the first Justice League. It's incredible how this movie got a do-over and transformed into a completely different movie.
Mulan (2020)
Shockingly bad and downright offensive
As a life-long Disney fan and Chinese American, I find this movie shockingly bad and downright offensive. Is this what Disney thinks of Chinese culture? What a joke. Disney's entire batch of remakes of the classic animated movies has been a disaster in movie-making (if not in the box office). I hope they rethink this strategy of remaking joyful animated films as serious live action movies with the worst scripts in the world, and none of the fun of the songs and musical numbers.
Hamilton (2020)
A special story for a dark 2020 in the USA
My new favorite musical. Unlike most musicals with one or two showstoppers and the rest being fillers that bore you to tears, Hamilton almost had no bad songs. The story of Hamilton and his compatriots was moving and inspirational. I watched it for the first time on July 4, 2020. In these dark times in the United States, the story of Hamilton feels especially important.
Blade Runner 2049 (2017)
If the original Blade Runner was a classic, the 2049 sequel is a masterpiece
Superior to the original Blade Runner, and one of the best scifi films for both scifi fans and non-fans alike. I just rewatched the original Blade Runner last night so this is not a comparison based on distant memories. The sequel has a richer but also more approachable and understandable story, better acting and cast, and even better cinematography and music. Must see! Don't be scared away by the weak box office results or long run-time.
Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017)
Unique and memorable scifi movie, much better than critics let on
Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets immerses you in a unique scifi fantasy world teeming with aliens and wondrous sights. Despite the weak plot, poor script, rushed character development, and typical sexist treatment of the female lead, I did find the movie enjoyable and memorable. I hope the movie does sufficiently well to encourage movie makers to continue to take chances on ambitious projects like this.
Warcraft (2016)
Best movie based on video game source material I've seen... better than critics say, give it a chance!
I admit that the story may be confusing for viewers who are not familiar with the Warcraft universe, this is by far the best movie based on video game source material. Unlike most movies that turn out far worse than the trailer, Warcraft is surprisingly better than the trailers and promotional material.
The story is much more complex and actions of the characters have significant consequences, unlike most other video game and fantasy movies where the "good guys" always win. Unfortunately, the story does begin abruptly, so for people not familiar with Warcraft, keep an open mind and let yourself get into the world of Azeroth.
I hope Blizzard will continue to make more movies in the Warcraft universe, as the story has only just begun. Oh, and please make an Overwatch movie as well!
