Saw V (2008)
Still good, but past the point of necessity.
Well, even though I was quite wary of this sequel (as I am of any series that goes past a third installment), I must say that Saw V is still pretty good. However, this might be one for fans only.
The reason I say that is because the story this time around is not really all that necessary. Saw IV wrapped up the entire mess pretty good, leaving Special Agent Hoffman to carry on Jigsaw's legacy. This entry just reveals more backstory that, while still somewhat interesting, is not something anyone really needs to know. It doesn't wrap up any holes or really reveal anything new.
In any case, this is a good entry, and I am amazed that the producers could keep it up for this long.
Mona Lisa Smile (2003)
Not as inspirational as it wants to be.
I was really disappointed with this movie. It is not a bad movie by any means, it's just that it leaves so much to be desired. The message is obviously feministic, but it doesn't come across as strongly as it would have if the film was made at the time period in which it takes place. Many of the characters fail to impress me or gain my sympathy, especially Julia Roberts' character, who is supposed to be to this film what Robin Williams was to Dead Poets Society. I'm not comparing Mona Lisa Smile to Dead Poets Society because it isn't Dead Poets Society, even though it tries to be. Like I said, this isn't a bad film, it's just that it could have been a lot more, and I really had my hopes up for this film.
Fainaru fantajî X (2001)
Didn't love it, but liked it.
I didn't love this game like I loved FFVII or FFVIII or FFIX. In fact, I only liked it and was almost brought to the point of hating it. I liked it the first time through, but I couldn't bring myself to play another minute of it again. Square, please wow me with FFXII like you did with FFVII and FFVIII and FFIX.
Silent Hill 2 (2001)
Excellent... just excellent
This game is a sequel to Silent Hill, the surprise hit videogame that came out in 1999 and scared the crap out of almost everyone who played it. Silent Hill 2 is quite different from the first one. It is completely independent, and it does that just right. This game, while nowhere near as scary as the first one, is more psychologically disturbing. The story has a theme of dealing with the ghosts of your past, which plays in very well with the psychologically deranged characters. The characters are more developed than in SH1, and the story is much better done. This game gains something that was missing from the first game, but loses something that the first game had. James Sunderland is my favorite character of all the games. It also has a twist near the end that I really didn't expect. A great game. Pick it up. I command you!
