Puppet Master (1989)
Great for what it is!
This is my least favorite of the series, however, after stating that, I must add that it established one of the most enjoyable series of films that Full Moon has ever done (second only to Trancers). This film tries to place you in a creepy old hotel, where the guests are going to be killed off by some supernatural dolls. And in that endeavor it delivers admirably. So in conclusion I would say that it accomplishes what it sets out to do, without enamoring us to the puppets at all (which is the charm of the later films in my opinion).
Matthew Blackheart: Monster Smasher (2002)
Surprisingly fun, a real joy!
I caught this movie quite by accident and was drawn in. The character is campy, in a 40's tough (but nice) guy kind of way. His clean cut demeanor, and no nonsense attitude towards good and evil make the Matthew Blackheart character a continuously enjoyable phenomenon. This movie was like a cross between the Guyver and Evil Dead. Campy, but nonstop fun. Don't watch it if you don't like cheese, but those with the taste won't be disappointed.
Evil Dead II (1987)
You can remake a bad movie, and make it a classic!
This revamped version of the original Evil Dead is one of the staple horror classics. In High School we accidentally rented this, going on 14 years ago now. After watching it once, I was hooked. It really was amazing when later I rented the original and realized that two was just a better version of one. If you haven't seen number one, don't bother! But, if you haven't seen Dead by Dawn, you need to get to the video store immediately and check this one out.
Fright Night (1985)
One of the all time best in its genre.
Fright Night is an absolute horror staple for vampire fans. It has good effects, good writing, and a great vampire. Charlie is a well developed and likable character. The supporting characters are believable (the reluctant policeman, the apprehensive girlfriend, and the nerdy friend). This movie reminds me of a fun Salem's Lot.
