Obliging Young Lady (1942)
Heine Manusch!
Totally fab opening has a train-track cadence set to baseball great Heine Manush's name. The name is used throughout the film and sets the tone of silliness. Filled with terrific chacacter actors, the films bounces along despite the lame plot. But it's always a pleasure to see Franklin Pangborn, Almira Sessions, Charles Lane, Eve Arden, Luis Alberni, Jimmy Conlin, George Cleveland, George Chandler, Fortunio Bonanova, Nora Cecil, Marjorie Gateson, and others in solid roles. Ruth Warrick is ok, Edmond O'Brien less so. Joan Carroll as the kid is blah, but Robert Smith is downright terrible. Heine Manusch, Heine Manusch!!!
The Widow from Monte Carlo (1935)
Dolores Del Rio is gorgeous but.....
this little film just falls flat. Warren William is good (as always) and Louise Fazenda steals what there is to steal, but it still doesn't work. Seems like we've seen all this before. The whole plot line about a stolen letter that doesn't even say anything (so why steal it?) seals the fate of this one. Warren Hymer is especially annoying and Del Rio's accent wanders... Still worth a look.
The Naughty Flirt (1930)
Lively Alice White Vehicle
.... that showcases her comedic skills and vibrant personality is eventually sunk by poor script and blah costar Paul Page (who resembles Fredric March). Miss White and Myrna Loy, however, are fun. White was saddled with lousy scripts in her brief starring career. She could have and should have been a rival to Clara Bow or Jean Harlow. She was terrific in Employees' Entrance but continued to slide anyway. Such is Hollywood. Catch her in Show Girl in Hollywood---she's good in that one too!!
