End of Watch (2012)
COPS: The Movie
I had heard about this movie when it came out, and planned to see it in the theaters. However, I ended up seeing a different movie instead and kind of forgot about this movie up until today when I was Redbox. I decided to rent it, and let me say I thoroughly enjoyed this film. The movie follows two young cops who are what some would call adrenalin junkies. They never seem afraid to confront danger. The movie really seems like a feature film version of the show COPS complete with shaky cameras and interesting interactions with bad guys. It's definitely a Hollywood movie and much more formulaic than an episode of COPS, but still very much like the TV show.
You'll be on the edge of your seat throughout the entire film. The dialogue is engaging, the characters are funny and interesting, and the plot is very suspenseful. Definitely one of the best cops movies I've ever seen. The only real issue is the ending which seemed to be a little cliché, but still a great movie overall.
Contagion (2011)
A Zombie Movie without the Zombies
You'd think a zombie movie without zombies would be boring, but Contagion delivers an intense and gripping tale. The story follows the main people involved in the spread of/prevention of the disease including patient 0 and her family as well as CDC researchers. It is a realistic look at would happen if the world was overcome with a deadly disease. There is not a dull moment in the entire movie. You will be on the edge of your seat. At the end of the movie you will likely have a sudden penchant for a Costco-sized bottle of Purell.
I'd definitely recommend checking this movie out. It is one of my all time favorites.
Blast from the Past (1999)
Awesome Classic Film
The concept of this movie is very entertaining. A family thinks a nuclear bomb attack is imminent and goes into hiding in their bomb shelter....for 35 years. When their son leaves the shelter 35 years later in search of food, supplies, and a wife, hilarity ensues.
The first half of the film is brilliant. It's hilarious and a very entertaining portrayal of a family living in a bomb shelter. The second half turns into a bit of a cliché romantic comedy, but it's bearable. I'd give the first half 10/10 stars and the second half 5/10 stars.
I have to say that it's the actors in this film that really make the movie work. Christopher Walken is a perfect as the father. Brendan Fraser is also quite funny as the fish-out-of-water son lost in the above-ground world. It's not an easy role to make work, but Fraser makes it work and manages to keep the audience engaged and loving the character.
If you haven't seen this movie, definitely see it. It's not an Oscar worthy film, but it is a super fun ride.
The Kill Point (2007)
The Kill Point
This is a well crafted heist story. It kept my attention through the entire series. Most of the characters and actors were great. John Leguizamo shines in his role as the lead bank robber. However, some of the characters were a little bit over the top including a hostage negotiator who is obsessed with grammar. That's just a bit too much for my taste. I'd highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys thrillers. It is very exciting and suspenseful, but still the writing and dialogue is not as great as it could be. But hey, it's just a mini-series, right? Definitely watch this if you've got some time to kill and are looking for something to keep interest. Overall, a great series.
