Perfectly written and acted
5 April 2023
What a brilliant movie. The acting and the casting was fantastic across the board. This film was a slow burn that always kept tugging me along with wildly unexpected and intriguing plot twists. It's a direct allegory to modern society and an extremely strong one at that. Sometimes, the allegory might feel a bit too on the nose, but I think that was important in order to clearly illustrate the morals of the story that might be missed if it were more nuanced.

There were so many things I loved about this movie: tone, cinematography, themes, and twists. It reminded me a bit of "The White Lotus."

RIght out the gate, the restaurant bill scene was pure genius and fantastically written and acted.

Woody Harrilson's role feels a bit like a cameo, but he was effective and perfectly cast as the ship's captain.

You could say that the film forgot about its main romantic characters for a big chunk of the film, but then again, I can see that lapse as working into the allegory as well.

There is a seasick scene that went on for what felt like WAY too long. But again, in considering the film as a whole, I understand the point of belaboring that scene.

The ending scene was absolutely brilliant on so many levels and commented on the modern-day caste system of our society, as well as the superficial nature of modern living. And there were several other powerful themes wrapped into the ending scene.

As an American, I always find the pace and tone of European film style to be refreshing. And this film delivered on that a-conventional storytelling.

Kudos to Ruben Östlund for bringing this gem into the world.

This was super important to get out into the world!
21 December 2022
This is a very important documentary to expose the ways of the British Monarchy. The public never got a chance to hear the real truth before. They had always been slandered and maligned due to covert and overt racism and by the fact that the royals couldn't accept someone taking a part of their limelight.

This couple is brave and forthcoming. It was a refreshing and enlightening perspective and the public finally gets to learn the truth about how they were bullied out of the monarchy.

I hope they go on to become mega successful and enjoy much happiness on their journey.

It was an absolute joy to see how much love they share for each other. Actually, it was adorable. Bravo for them. Bravo for Meghan.

A perfect film experience and a delight to watch!
14 November 2020
Every frame of this film was a delight! It was truly firing on all cylinders in this genre, the genre of cool, indie romances.

First off, the casting was off the hook! Liesha Ward Knox, the main woman, was like watching magic on screen. She was so connected to every moment, every word, every look, that it made the film really come alive. Seriously, she is an absolutely outstanding actor with incredible charisma radiating off of her! What a treat it was to experience the character through her! She is so gifted, she could read the iPhone disclaimer and make it compelling to an audience.

But they say, 90% of a director's job is casting. So my hat goes off to auteur director, Guy Pigden, who also acted in the lead role, wrote the screenplay, produced and edited this incredible film!! Even one of those film jobs is tough for a person to succeed at, but Guy tackled all of them at once!!!!! Wow!! He had the perfect touch in letting the scenes play out and breathe without overdoing it.

Guy's realization of the Alex character was perfectly handled to deliver a really satisfying character throughout the whole movie. It's really hard to direct and act at the same time, but Guy completely pulled it off.

As an editor, Guy had a really nice touch! There were some spicy moments, but the editing style fit the tone and never felt gratuitous or merely ornamental.

The rest of the cast was equally engaging and Guy did a super job of balancing their characters' storylines to fully support the overall story.

Astra McLaren was also perfectly cast to complete the love triangle. She was really interesting and made strong choices in bringing out the character. The beach scene at the end was fantastic.

The story itself, was not nothing new and had a lot of the same beats we are used to in the genre, but the magic came in the execution. It's just like with food. You can order a cheap plate of spaghetti from a terrible restaurant, or you can order gourmet pasta from a 5-star restaurant. Sure, they are both noodles, but one is sublime. That's how this story felt when all the ingredients perfectly blended to transcend the screen.

For many people, escapism for movies is going to see a big, familiar, action blockbuster that features things blowing up and people in superhero costumes. For me, escapism is being completely unaware of a film or its trappings and watching it unfold with no idea what the next moment will bring. That's how this film was. It was fresh and intriguing to watch unfold.

Major kudos to Guy Pigden for this outstanding work and major kudos to the actors, especially Liesha Ward Knox, for making this film amazing! This film gets 5 full stars.

Powerful and timely!
22 August 2020
Wow, is it art imitating life or the other way around? This is a beautiful and compelling film that puts the humanity on the ICE/Immigrant situation! The film is so powerful because it puts faces and personalities on the statistics of how inhumane Trump's treatment of immigrants has been.

Bravo to this film for peeling back caricatures painted the xenophobic right wing Americans and giving us a look at the real human cost of such harsh immigration policies.

The film is beautifully shot, well-acted, accessible, and extremely poignant. If people don't respond to this story, they must be already dead.

It takes the issues head on and makes one realize that we are all people born into circumstances, whether good or bad, that we have no control over. This film makes us realize that the privileged are merely that way because of the way the dice rolled.

Kudos to the cast and crew for creating this timely and important message with goal of bringing ever more needed awareness to this issue.

Perfect vehicle for the charming Michael J. Fox in all his prime!
26 April 2020
This romantic comedy was a primo and fun vehicle for Michael J. Fox to beam his charisma into our hearts. His character seemed tailor-made to his busy-body charm style. It was a really fun movie. Though the leading actress was not the best in her craft, Michael carries everything beautifully to a very satisfying ending for anybody who loves the romantic comedy genre.

There are a number of cliches throughout, but it was very much worth the ride.

Embarrassing to watch this turkey
11 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This film was awkward and embarrassing to watch. Every scene, every character motivation, every action, and every plot point was awkwardly played and terribly directed.

************** SPOILERS ************* SPOILERS *******************

Poor Gina Gershon. She is adorable and a good actress. But they saddled her with this hokey "English" accent that she could not pull off and it takes you out of every scene she is in the moment she opens her mouth. It had the effect of keeping us at arm's length from the character. She actually is a good actress, but she is terrible in this film by being forced into the accent. The crazy thing is, the accent had zero point in the story. It's filmed in NY. She could have just spoken American English. There is one line about "our visiting scientist" to account for the fact that she has a so-called British accent, but it did little to make us believe she was really from the UK.

The accent also had me thinking throughout the movie, that she really was American and was lying about being British for some reason that would be revealed. But no. It was just a terrible, fluctuating accent.

Matthew Modine had no business being a leading man in this film. He was more suited to being a guy buddy of a lead man. He just couldn't carry it.

The whole bit of him falling head over heels with a married woman and then stalking her.... well... it was just plain creepy and unbecoming. Yuck.

And then when he does a switcheroo at the end and goes for Ginger, it felt yucky, as if he was so desperate, he had to take the next best thing. And Ginger rightly called him out on it. It was absolutely not plausible that he could be in love with her so fast. Side note, why is Ginger named that when she looks Italian and has dark hair?

The scene with them crawling on the floor looking for the frog was cringe-worthy and felt like it was from a Jerry Lewis movie.

Why was Matthew Modine handcuffed to the bed in the very opening scene? It had nothing to do with anything. Speaking of unrelated elements, why is the film called "Kettle of Fish" when it had zero to do with anything in the movie. "Kettle of fish" implies there is more than one. So I kept thinking there were going to be more fish. But no. It was just a single gold fish in a bowl.

When the married woman does a "sexy" dance for Matthew to seduce him, it was so dreadful that I was literally embarrassed for the actress that she had to do that dance.

Gina Gershon is smolderingly sexy as an actress, and it was all wasted in this film, as she was reduced to a jokey fake Brit with zero charm, charisma, or believability. And if the part was not meant to be sexy, that's fine. But why make her character into a cardboard clown. She could have been real and had real heart.

When she is supposedly on a date with the other scientist from work, nothing about that scene, not one single thing, felt real or compelling or funny or anything. The scene felt about as engaging as watching a some previously spilled popcorn on the movie theater floor.

Rom-com's are my favorite genre. That's way I was so put off by this drivel. But to be fair, I had just watched "Jerry McGuire" the day before. I guess that kind of set the bar pretty high. But I have enjoyed countless other low budget rom-coms at the level of Kettle of Fish. The difference is, writing talent, director talent, and believable casting. Now if you will excuse me, I gotta go take a shower to wash off all that creepy stalking from the elevator scenes.

What a turkey! Completely forced, with bad lead casting!
30 March 2020
This movie is boring, loaded with cliches, bad casting, and annoying tones. Anna Kendrick is mal-cast as a quirky tough-girl. She could not pull this roll off because she had no depth or actual connection to the character. It seemed like she was doing schtick the whole time.

Her love interest appeared to be way too old for her.

The "comedy" fell completely flat. They were trying to make tough guys have a funny, human side, like in Pulp Fiction, but it all just seemed disconnected and written.

I almost bailed on the movie about 5 times, but I didn't want to have to go on another big hunt to find an afternoon movie to watch.

Overall, it felt mechanical, concocted, and riddled with notes from the development executives.

Other than the script being lame, the biggest problem was the poor casting of Anna Kendrick in that role.

It did have some great fight choreography though.

Fresh, charming and amazing actor chemistry!
30 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This film was a delight to watch!!! From the poster, I had the idea that it was going to be a drug-fueled gritty movie like "White Girl". But surprisingly, it was a full on romance set to a caper background plot, The lead actors had every bit as much chemistry together as Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling in the Notebook. The thing that made this movie so cool and fun to watch was how it avoided all the excepted cliches.

<<<<<<< SPOILERS >>>>>>>>>> <<<<<<<<< SPOILERS >>>>>>>

There were so many times when I was pleasantly surprised by the omission of old cliches. For example:

There was no cruelty or violence or people tied to a chair getting beaten up, a staple aspect to most caper movies.

When they were romping through the stranger's house and sleeping in their pool house, nobody caught them. This breaks all the stereotypical treatment of those scenarios. But surprisingly, there was still tension because we were expecting it.

The item in the briefcase was the best!!!!!! It was of value to nobody except the ex-wife and her former husband. It was literally worth no money but it had such high stakes retrieving it. This was a brilliant and satisfying choice.

At the metro, Danny is desperate to catch up to Ellie. But rather than jump the turnstyle, as one would expect, he offers a guy $100 to get him through legally. This shows that Danny has real morals and a heart.

And the biggest one of all, the movie ends with Ellie's somewhat reserved reaction to Danny's kiss. It was so brilliant that they didn't go full on... like every other Hollywood romance. It was absolutely sweet and their connection was beyond adorable.

This movie is a winner from start to finish!!!! Bravo

Fantastic acting... but overly bleak.
6 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The acting in this film was gripping. The tone was amazing and super compelling. The scope of the film was perfectly suited to highlight the small town drama. However, this film was overly bleak and too uncomfortable to be enjoyable to watch!

*************** SPOILERS **************** The problem with this movie is that it had very few moments of joy or goodness to offset all the misery it presented. It was brutally graphic and raw... but out of balance. I really needed a little sunshine to counterbalance all the evil. Luckily, Bear, the truck driver, and the diner boss lady, were in Katie's corner. But it never they never got a chance to shine as a hero or mentor for her.

Every little bit of redemption or hope was missing or hidden from the audience. For example, when the mechanic goes to beat up the rapist, we didn't get to have the justice of seeing the revenge on screen. In stead, they just cut away. It was frustrating to not get closure on seeing the rapist get his due.

And even in the very end of the movie, we see Katie is finally choosing to overcome and move on. But she hitchhikes to a semi truck and we know she is just going to get abused again. I wish the semi pulled up, and a really friendly and motherly lady trucker was at the wheel. Then we would have felt like Katie was going to be ok. But instead, we know exactly what will happen in that truck.

Overall, my feeling felt like... If you are getting hit on the hand with a hammer for 2 hours, it feels really good when someone stops hitting. Like when Katie finally chooses hope at the end. Sure, she chose hope, but after being hit with a hammer so long, any break would feel good. It felt manipulative in that way, gratuitous cruelty with the end goal of relief.

Fits the genre and it's franchise... if that's your thing. (Also Movie Mistake Revealed)
20 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This movie fits the genre and its franchise. It is very solid on action scenes and car chases. The action scenes were pretty standard. Too bad they weren't more creative like in John Wick 3.

It was fun to see Martin Lawrence and Will Smith together. Their chemistry is familiar and nice, but falls flat in this film. The dialogue and relationship were overly formulaic and lost a lot of charm because of that. It seems like their barbs and jokes to and about each other were written by a committee... and then rewritten by another committee, causing them to lose wit and charm.

The sound mix was first rate. The epic final gun battle was awesome to hear in the theater.

__________ SPOILERS ______________ SPOILERS ____________________

I was taken out of the movie a couple times by production issues and it was frustrating with such a big budget. It was like pulling back the curtain on the Wizard of Oz and completely pulled me out of the story.

1) The parkour stunt double who (was fighting Will Smith on the roof) looked nothing like the body type of the guy Will Smith was fighting, so it looked silly.

2) MOVIE MISTAKE: Vanessa Hudgens shoes literally change from one shot to the next and it completely pulled me out of the movie. This happens when the cops all meet in the headquarters lobby and head down to the armory to check out their cool gadgets (like the tricked-out food truck.) In the lobby she is CLEARLY wearing black booties and pants and in the very next wide shot wears black pumps.

That caused me to drift off into a bunch of thoughts about if they had shot the two scenes months apart in completely different locations and literally forgot to bring the right shoes.

3) When Michael Bay, the famous film director, shows up for a cameo, again it had the effect of taking me out of the movie and thinking about Michael Bay.

4) It really bothered me how they are always talking about the Bad Boys song. It felt forced and also felt like they were breaking the "4th wall" and talking to the audience with a little jokey joke. I'm sure many folks thought it was hilarious, but to me it just felt phoney... again, taking me out of the story.

Anyway, it's probably a fun ride if that is genre works for you. But the joy, charm and spontaneity of the franchise and characters seems officially tapped out.

Absolutely firing on all cylinders in my perfect genre (relationships and indie themes).
1 January 2020
This movie was an absolute delight. Not knowing anything about it before hitting "play", I was tremendously impressed with the giant celebrity talent in the film. But it was so well written, directed, acted and shot, that the celebrities quickly had me forgetting they were anybody but the characters in the film.

There were unpredictable and fresh plot points through out the film. It has no murders, no evil, nor big big set pieces, but it was a delight from start to finish. Callum Turner was stellar in the leading role. And he was directed in a very real and subtle way that made his character mesmerizing to watch!

Kudos to the team for the whole endeavor. BIG BIG THUMBS UP!! What a refreshing and original story and treatment. Bravo.

It's the Mac and Cheese of movies! Familiar comfort food in the form of cinema.
30 December 2019
To go with a food analogy, this film felt like comfort food, Mac and Cheese. Every bite was creamy and delicious and just what one needs when they sit down for a meal of it.

Just like Mac and Cheese, this film was not full of nuanced spices or unexpected flavors. It was full on joy and comfort and warm, welcoming goodness.

Kristin Davis is absolutely adorable and a delight to watch. She is cute, believable, relatable, and looks so cute in her perfectly pedestrian uniform and boots.

Rob Lowe was the perfect match in a familiar and likable character (who is also handsome and beyond belief).

The film had no surprises... just like Mac and Cheese. It warms the soul and brings a smile. Everything about this film felt welcoming and delightful.

The cinematography was equally inviting, most shots filmed in the warm golden glow of magic hour.

It's a cinematic dish that just may help you remember the joy and hope of being alive.

Bravo! A smile from start to finish.

SUPER Sweet, entertaining, and had great casting ---- SPOILERS_----
8 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This movie was a delight to watch!! From the very first frame until the very last one, it delivered smiles and a great feeling all around.

The acting was superb! That physical casting was a little off between the two sisters, unless I missed something in their relationship where they had different parents. But even so, it was still super nice to see their acting together.

I LOVED ALL THE RELATIONSHIP DYNAMICS!! The two parent leads (the home owners) were superb. All the others were incredible also.

To be honest, I bet this film would be a difficult and boring script read due to the ensemble slice-of-life style. But the writer and director were the same person and he really had a handle on bringing his vision to life. Every nuance, every detail, added to the overall emotional transport this film delivered.

There were so many memorable scenes that were a blast to see unfold.

It was so fun watching every single actor in their roles. Even the twins had me in hysterics.

************ SPOILER ALERT **********

The only reason I gave this film a 9 instead of a 10 is that it's wrap up after Christmas was not very compelling. I was hoping for more of an electric culmination of events, but it just kind of go solved in a non-dramatic way.

Still, it is a great film that I will love to watch again and again. Kudos to the director for creating his vivid vision and kudos to the actors for being so charming and awesome!

You lost me forever on Season 2, Episode 6 "Unleashed"
3 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This show was amazing for season 1. It was compelling and had great characters. The finally was awesome. But in season 2, things started to go downhill really quickly. The series turned into a sappy, incestuous, soap opera.

For me, it was clear they ran out of material in the episode when the power went out in the restaurant. But it seemed like it might be worth the time to check out one more episode. Then "Unleashed" happened (S2,E6).

SPOILERS!!!************* SPOILERS**********

In "Unleashed" the script was a schmaltzy disaster, coupled with a heavy-handed and melodramatic director that made dramatic scenes laughable. Literally, we were laughing out loud at the supposedly dramatic moments.

The inciting incident of Gary's dog running away, was given outrageous importance! The whole gang assembles with great desperation to find the dog. It had the urgency of searching for a toddler who had been abducted. Wow. The energy, thanks to the on-the-nose script and the insanely heavy directing, made the drama into a farce.

When Gary runs a stop sign and gets pulled over, he is so wildly over the top that you would think the cop was literally going to find cocaine in Gary's car. But instead, the cop turns all "Howdy Doody" in an instant, letting Gary off with the most cliche apology ever.

That's just one tiny example of the whole show's tone.

When the entire group is running down the stairs in slow mo to see the dog, it was almost like a Saturday Night Live sketch. NOBODY would do that. It would just be like "Hey, they found Garys' dog, awesome." And that would be the end of reaction.

I felt bad for the actors having to do all this silliness. Like when the son has to hold the daughter's hand to pretend they are a couple. C'mon, that was just stupid, especially since we never saw the girl's reaction when he grabs her hand. And the dad yelling across the street from his car window was comical. He looked like central casting... "Time to insert the shot of the dad." It felt like a bad script note.

Overall, this script and directing were absolutely caricatures, schmaltzy, and beyond trite.

The very best elements of the series are the casting, the sound mix, the production design and the cinematography. The acting is awesome. It's a shame to force all that greatness into a dopey soap opera.

Loved season 1, but I'm outta there.

Super realistic emotional journey! Fantastic directing and acting
22 October 2017
This movie is a gem for an indie lover like me. The simplicity of the story allowed focus on the complex and nuanced layers of the characters. Quite understated in its presentation, the film allowed us to fully digest each of the completely moving scenes. In each scene, there were so many feelings that resonated with me. This movie had a similar unrequited love theme that is found throughout the indie film landscape, but it still came across as fresh and compelling. The actor's chemistry was strong, though it took a few scenes to kick into gear. As a big fan of character movies, this one delivers on every level.

While AmyAmy Hargreaves, in her quirky, super appealing, and unpredictable realization of the character was particularly engaging, I felt the most important scenes in the film were delivered brilliantly by the jilted husband played by Mark Blum. Blum was absolutely perfect in every scene and had the gravity to pull the other actors into a heightened drama.

The smallness of this production was also refreshing and intimate. I love when films don't feel slick and over-rehearsed. I would have given this film a 10, were it not for a certain overly-sharp character shift of Amy Hargreaves in a scene set in the morning. But I will overlook that because the rest of the film was working so well. They say 90% of a director's job is casting. I bet that was the case in this excellent film, too. Bravo to everyone involved in this movie.

SPOILERS!____ Extremely well-crafted and a great movie… if you like cruelty. —SPOILERS!!!!
16 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
This movie was well-made and super compelling. I would give it 8 out of ten stars if I were a fan of this genre. Its set up is fantastic and its execution is really strong. Both the acting and directing were first rate!

My problem is, I don't know anyone would make a movie like this. The premise is sick: a woman is kidnapped, held prisoner and sexually abused… with plenty of detail at each point. But I felt it was disgusting to watch. It felt yucky to give my time to a movie that is all about the the dark and sick side of humanity.

If you like that kind of thing, then this is a really solid and creepy movie that would be great. It's actually an excellent portrayal of a sick human. It's just not my cup of tea.

It also felt like the theme and story was lazy story-telling. Basically, get a creep, have him sadistically dominate an unwilling female, and then…

SPOILERS.——— SPOILERS———

have her turn the tables and get revenge. You could take any sadistic loser, have him kidnap anyone weaker, and have instant screen drama. That's why I say the storytelling is lazy. With some adequate directing and acting, this story could have been made by anybody.

My big problem, apart from the sickness of the theme, was the implausibility of her captivity… as well as her inability to escape.

There could have been a thousand times where should have hit him over the head with a frying pan or stabbed him in the heart, but it never happened and was never even considered by the victim character, Claire.

Additionally, her attempts to escape were pathetically weak. The windows were "reinforced" but she could have easily dug out the wooden window frames that were holding the glass. She could have tried to break through walls. She could have lain in wait to kill the guy when he came home. And on and on. A truly desperate person would have been able to escape that place, especially when the captor is away at work the whole day, every day.

Other than the implausibility, this movie would be engaging and dramatic to watch… if one is into that kind of thing.

Christina P: Mother Inferior (2017 TV Special)
Not funny. Not smart. Just gross. Disgustingly gross.
15 October 2017
Trust me, I can handle vulgarity. I'm a huge fan of stand-up comedy and also a fan of the likes of Louis CK and Amy Schumer. But folks, this comedy special of Christina Pazsitsky is completely gross and unfunny.

Comedy is funny when it is smart and insightful. This special is just horrible. Pazsitsky relies on topping each "joke" about an orifice, with another take on a different orifice that is even viler.

Joan Rivers had plenty of vulgarity in her routines, but it was smart. Louis CK and Amy Schumer are the same, smart. (Although their 2017 specials were about as gross as Pazitsky's). But if you look at the body of CK or Schumer's work, they are very smart and offer clever observations.

Pazsitsky, however, is completely unfunny in this special; merely describing body fluids, body function, and sexual mechanics is trite, sophomoric, and annoying.

Her interactions with the audience during the show were cringe-worthy and embarrassing to watch.

It's like she had no clever observations to transform into comedy so she went for the big laugh by talking existentially about the body and sex, as if the just uttering a vulgar sentence is automatically supposed to be a laugh riot. Nothing in this is funny. I was deeply put off by her daft insulting of the audience's intelligence.

She's an appealing person with decent comic delivery, but the "comedy" out of her mouth was nothing more than futilely trying to max out the shock meter. But that "shock" had no effect other than to make me want to immediately cleanse my palette with some good old-fashioned Chris Rock, Sarah Silverman, or Chelsea Handler.

I hope this special gets buried and never surfaces again.

10 Year Reunion (2016 TV Movie)

Terrible at every level
15 October 2017
Good grief, this movie was terrible!! It's hard to know which was worse, the script, the directing, or the acting. Actually, I feel like the actors may have been passable, but the over-the-top, melodramatic directing made this film so campy and dopey that it could literally be fodder for mockery in memes across the web.

I was interested in the film because the synopsis had elements that I liked in "Pretty Little Liars", sneaky, backstabbing friends trying to solve a murder of one of their besties.

The script relied on dense layers of exposition. At the big reveal scene, I was tempted to grab a yellow pad to diagram the plot so I could keep track of it all. But at that moment, I was far too distracted by the bombastic, heavy-handed, bigger than big "emotional" shouting scene between the characters. The acting in that scene was so completely over-the-top that I erupted into spontaneous belly- laughing. I doubt that was the intention of the scene. This movie had zero nuance at any level. The characters weren't cardboard cutouts, they were regurgitated clowns.

Why did I continue watching this film if it was so bad? I was playing a game of trying to predict each character's next line. I did really well… until everything came off the rails in the bizarre expositional ending showdown.

Fantastic Acting, Amazing directing, Insanely steamy
15 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
— The acting in this film was super solid, as was the directing. The story, a pretty standard infidelity theme, was unoriginal but superbly executed.

— My favorite thing about this movie was the romantic development at the start of the relationship of the two leads. It was really satisfying to feel the hunt and chase in action. It was all super plausible and believable.

—- The Toronto setting was beautifully shot. The cinematography was perfect.

About the sex scenes:

—- Honestly, this movie draws a very blurry line between porn and art. It may be one of the most sexually explicit films I have ever seen. In fact, it is so explicit, that sometimes it took me out of film by wondering things like:

—— Are they really doing it on the set in front of a whole crew? —- Are they really aroused on set? I mean there is full contact with all the erogenous zones —- Was it uncomfortable for the crew to watch?

—— etc.

The point is, as beautiful and steamy the sex scenes were, they ended up being a distraction to the emotional connection of the film. I mean, there was full on nudity with full-on lesbian sexual action. Everything from masturbation to sex toys was covered in explicit and stunningly beautiful cinematography.

Also, I happened to have streamed this film alone, but the experience made me think I would have been far too embarrassed to watch it with anyone else such as a friend, wife, relative, girlfriend, boyfriend. I can't imagine watching this film with another human without strong reactions about comparing one's self or sexual activity to that which was depicted on screen.

Still, I loved this film. It felt very sincere. As a giant fan of indie romance films, this film was firing on all cylinders!

This film takes all the best parts of indie filmmaking and puts them into an absolutely riveting and flawless movie, albeit a quirky one!

It was a delight watching Melanie Lynskey meander her goofy self into the role of a badass and reluctant super heroine. The outright honesty of her character is so fresh and fun to experience in scene after scene.

Elijah Wood kills it as the dorky sidekick. His normal presence and past work wouldn't generally bring the word "delightful" to mind upon seeing him on screen. But in this film, he brings the full on charm in the form of a nerdy social reject.

I wasn't expecting this film to get so dark, (ala The Hangover), but it really pays off in so many great ways.

More than just an indie character piece, this plot is extremely well-written to have plausible twists and turns that keep you glued to the screen.

The casting was phenomenal! The director cast two everyday people for the leads, as opposed to glamming it up with stereotypical pretty faces. The quirky dialogue coming out of Melanie Lynskey's mouth was priceless! You just wanted to go into the movie and hug her and give her a nice piece of warm peach pie.

In one word, this movie is FRESH!

Chloe (2009)

Brilliant, sexy, disturbing, & extremely plausible script. Superior casting & directing [********** SPOILERS **********]
8 September 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I happened upon this movie after browsing my favorite Netflix section: "Independent."

Without knowing anything about the film, I was immediately drawn in by the stellar casting of Julianne Moore, Amanda Seyfried, Liam Neeson, all of whom are insanely talented and believable actors.

While some elements were predictable, it didn't matter because the execution on all levels was so captivating. A story is a story, but the telling of the story is what makes for the emotional connection.

For a slow-paced psychological mystery, this film does an outstanding job of delivering masterful scenes one after another.

********************************** SPOILER ALERT ********* SPOILERS ************

One of the hottest scenes in cinema is when Catherine has revenge-jealousy-anger- exploratory sex with Chloe. With so much tension wrapped in lead up to the scene, it is beyond satisfying to see it play out so solidly and solemnly. The big twist for me was that Chloe actually fell for Catherine. For someone who is detached from the people she has sex with, it was extraordinarily powerful when she let her guard down and fell for Catherine.

The weight of this scene and relationship was revisited in the end when Chloe forces Catherine to kiss under the threat of being killed. Even though it was super suspenseful (for fear Catherine would be murdered), it played as one hundred percent erotic, filled with all the emotions of the relationship between the two women.

Side note, the way Chloe managed to have sex with all three members of the family was completely brilliant and plausible. I loved the angst the film brought by letting the audience know how Chloe was sleeping with everyone behind each of their backs.

Then when I saw the credits roll, I was pleased to see that it was made by the director of one of my favorite films called Exotica. Atom Egoyan. An incredible director, he has a talent of bringing sex into real world relationship dysfunction.

My one gripe with this movie is that I wish, somehow, they would have all reconciled and that Chloe would end up healthy. I so badly wanted somebody to love her. The ending was a downer for me and I really wanted Chloe to end up feeling like she discovered a new place in the world.

Still, a strong film that I highly recommend for those who enjoy relationship dynamics.

Slow-burn Art-house Film completely worth watching!
29 August 2017
This film, even though it is a slow burn art-house film, really has a lot going for it. The casting is perfect! I never expected to see Guy Pierce as an Americana low life, but he totally pulls it off. Kristen Wiig was perfectly cast in the completely understated role. Sometimes she is drawn inward so much, that you almost wish she had a moment of warmth that was more than just nuance. I wanted her to have a little outward joy on film to help ease some of the difficulty in watching the character trying to cope with herself in the world.

But I really loved some of the sweet moments of warmth in the film, however, reserved they happened to be. I was touched by several moments, especially the moments between Hailee Steinfeld and Kristen Wiig.

Over all, this movie was my cup of tea, I just wish it had a little more range for Kristen's character to help swing the needle up and down a bit.

Baby Driver (2017)

****** SPOILER ALERT ***** Awesome Character, Awesome Action! Pure fun!
3 August 2017
************** SPOILER ALERT ***** Awesome Character, Awesome Action! Pure fun!

Baby Driver is a romp. The opening car chase scene is worth the price of admission in and of itself. It's one of the coolest chase scenes ever!!

The best thing about this movie, other than the chases, is the Baby character. I'm a sucker for an understated hero and this really hits the mark. Baby is an introvert who loses himself in music. But he is also a savant of perception and has a quiet power that really makes him appealing. I could quibble about some points where the character writing was poor, but I'll forgive those points because the broad character is so strong.

I had real problems with the casting of Kevin Spacey as the crime boss. The casting is so stereotypical and cliché. Spacey behaves exactly as you would expect such a cliché character to do. It would have been a much more interesting choice to have the crime boss be cast as… A 22 year old rapper, a 15 year old gaming nerd, a foreigner from a developing country, or a heavy suburban female with kids type… anything but the tired trope of Kevin Spacey the crime boss.

This movie would have had a much higher rating for me with a couple EASY changes.

SPOILER ALERT**********************

1) The Baby's love interest is too much, too fast without them really having enough relationship development screen time together prior to them devoting their lives to each other.

2) The movie has a double ending that is confusing and annoying. The movie ends when the couple drives down a country road. The credits should have rolled at that point. I would have given this film a way higher rating. The second ending is annoying.

Still, I forgive all the faults, thanks to the awesome Baby character and is bad-assery!!

Cliché, heavy-handed, and Junior High directing skills
27 July 2017
This was an overly melodramatic cliché that was painful and embarrassing to watch. The film was so on-the-nose about every detail, that it was eye-rollingly bad. As if the cultural gap wasn't big enough between the billionaire and the poor plebeian, it was exaggerated 10-fold by the heavy-handed directing. Every single point of contrast seemed like it was made by a 13-year-old filmmaker with no understanding of nuance, cleverness, or inspiration. The characters were cardboard cutouts of stereotypes.

I wanted to love this film, but it was dreadful at every level. The reason Beatriz has to eat dinner with the family was laughable, the costume disparity... laughable... the sad-sack martyr of the protagonist... laughable.

Lead actor bombs the film
26 July 2017
Ironically, Kumail Nanjiani, the lead actor in this film stands out as a terrible actor against the fantastic talent of Zoe Kazan, Ray Romano, and Holly Hunter. I say, "Ironically," because it is the lead actor's project and story! Zoe Kazan is adorable and charming as his love interest, but he is flat and wooden, which has the effect of creating zero chemistry between the lovers in this romance.

Additionally, there are random, out-of-character scenes forced into the story which are unbelievable and clumsy. For example, when Kumail Nanjiani shows up at a drive- thru restaurant, the bit seems like it is from another character in another movie.

Topping all that, the film keeps its emotional connection to the audience at arm's length due to the insensitive directing that seems to prefer the syllable of every written line in lieu of nuance and charm that may have been between the lines.
