The Butler (2013)
If its a true story, include all real facts and don't change anything
What annoys most people, such as myself, is the fact that Hollywood title films such as 'The Butler' as a true story, yet over 50% is changed. That does not make it a true story. Although this disappointed me, i felt that the film still should get a good rating as it was extremely touching, not to the fact of the civil rights movement but his life, what he went through. We want his life story, the real one and doesn't include the extras that has nothing to do with the title. Understanding what goes on within those highly secured walls is little known and the language of the guests and presidents is unclear. This film should have been done differently, the changes that the production studio should not have been made, we know what we want to see, not what you think we want to see. Stop messing about Hollywood, make real films and stop feeding us false information especially about someone's life as hard as Eugene Allen's.
Earthkiller (2011)
what's going on?
so this film starts off with a naked woman, wow right? everything going for a man is happy EXCEPT she's flat and whiter than the whitest Irish. Boom, happy moment gone. And what else, for the opening part of the film, nothing makes sense, literally, nothing does. Is this a Sci-Fi or what??? Nope this film is a piece of trash rubbish that was pooped out of a stupid D-graded writer who couldn't be arse to use his intelligence. Seriously, worst opening ever, didn't even bother watching after 20 minutes because nothing made any sense. Save yourself from this film, there are films that are rated lower than this film but makes absolutely more sense, save yourself and don't dare watch it, even if you're drunk - Just don't.
Black Hawk Down (2001)
America not what the media depict them as
This movie had good points and bad points. If most of the fighting was actually the truth, then America must of had some idiotic colonels. Who the hell sends freaking expensive helicopters into battle where the opposition (in media terms) always carry RPG? The stereotype that Americans are dumb is actually on point in this film. Too much shooting, it got boring. there was too many action and not enough calm scenes and history as shown that a film that calms down after a big action scene usually makes the film good. This film is definitely a propaganda film for more recruits, not only in America, to fight it wars that generally do not concern them (because they want to show that they are the boss in wars - They really aren't)). It is also said that most of the film isn't entirely correct, BIG changes were made to hide some 'embarrassment'. All in all, Ridley Scott did a good job, got directing choices but the whole America is number 1 makes Black Hawk Down lose so many stars.
Dawn of the Dragonslayer (2011)
Good enough?
Looking at some reviews after i saw the film, i was pretty disappointed when i saw extremely high and extremely low ratings. IMDb overall of 4.1 is too low in my opinion. This film got me into it straight away, bring me back to why the life back then is so much simple and better than todays. I must say that some people caught the right things as why this film dropped so many IMDb stars. First of all, we see what some people think is either dragon poo or spit out food, to which i don't care but why is it included? Seriously during the film i was so confused of what it actually was, i thought it was a sheep made into a big ball to use on a catapult. The acting of some of them are terrible, for instant the main character has a Irish accent while the others had normal English accent even though they were only a hill away from each other. As soon as we see the dragon up close on the tower and at the end, the film was ruined. I could accept the lead actors awful voice, but the dragon killed it. the CGI is terrible, I've seen better cgi monsters in other low budget films but this takes it downwards - Just terrible. All films are predictable just get over it.
The main actress Nicola Posener is probably the best thing about the film, her elegance and beauty with her acting was splendid and the director should have definitely got a different leading actor. The mise- en-scene was definitely good with the good camera angles overall.
worth watching except if your not fond of crappy CGI that will ruin it all.
Yang men nu jiang zhi jun ling ru shan (2011)
terrible
With all the talent and the script that thing film acquired was destined to be great. But no. It was terrible. I don't dare explain why it went so wrong. Apparently the director hasn't even made a good film in over 2 decades, so why would they choose him to make a big budget film?
The biggest problem in this film were the 'mothers' and 'grandmothers'. Seriously they all look the same age, they are all young and most likely late 20s to early 30s but no, this film makes them out to seem a generation apart. Just no. In all my viewings of Asian films, this one takes the joke out of that. Continuity seems to be a major problem in this film, one second the lady warriors are taking off 2 chain mail suits and suddenly 10 seconds later they got two thick chain mail rope of about 50 metres, how is that possible? The one thing i hate about Asian films is the over dramatic fight scenes where the fighters seem to fly 10 metres because screw logic and the physics law, there is no reason that it should be added.
I'm not sure if the actors reputation went in decline after but if it didn't then thats good, they put a real performance but the director - terrible. Just quit. Seriously I don't know how i managed to go through that film especially after trying to make myself quit.
Warn you, don't watch it especially if you have OCD.
Naresuan (2007)
worth watching
although this film was to be done in one long 'epic' feature film, it was instead broken down to many films. Looking upon this film and seeing it was made in Thailand, the first thing going through my head was that this film may be like the terribly disgusting Ong Bak film that lacked everything but the story. I was wrong. This film doesn't lack much but certainly deserve the rating it has on IMDb. Because it was broken down to fit in the time schedule, we don't know how many days have passed where we see lots of scenes in daylight and it seems like one whole day but it isn't. It started off slowly but gradually get into it. nevertheless an amazing film with a lot of good scenes and definitely brings us into the story for the next film.
Tamnaan somdet phra Naresuan maharat: Phaak prakaat itsaraphaap (2007)
better than the first part, trust me
Part 1 was good, Part 2 is epic'er. Now we come into what the Asian's are best known for in their films - their epic battles. We skip a decade or so into the future where naresuan is know a grown man and thinking for himself. In the part 1 we see that they said he will be a good leader, but already in the first 30 minutes or so in part 2 we see that they were right. His constant thinking and knowledge pulls him to think between the lines, between the battlefield and reality. What this shows is never underestimate someone small as they say "big surprises comes in small packages". The battle is definitely the main part of this film, the preparation in making this idea obviously great and well worth it. I cannot spoiler such epic battle but this film is the start of the war.
Europa Report (2013)
different to the others
This low budget Sci-Fi film was super interesting and was definitely different to other sci-fi's that focus on mars or the boring Earth moon. The only thing lacking in this film is the way it had to go back to those characters in the one-on-one interviews and some of the camera shots - the cctv type. Sure great idea but didn't work out in this situation.
The fact that this film was so much more realistic than any other sci-fi's is what should make this film popular. Just going beyond the moon is already a record breaking achieve for man (not the robot they sent to mars as it isn't human. This makes not only Mars the only other discovered planet on our solar system to have had life, but maybe there is hope that Jupiter and its moons could as well.
The film started off extremely slow it terms of getting to know the characters and the story it self which was hard for the viewers to get a grip of concentration on it. All in all, the film wasn't that bad, some improvements definitely, but so very interesting and super tense near the end.
In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale (2007)
Don't watch it.
Where do I start? I watched this film on netflix after it being out for 7 years and I have to say, this is the first time I've ever heard of Uwe Boll. Making movies adapted from video games is a good idea but everyone knows that a game or film made by the counterpart always, and I repeat, always bad. They ruin the franchise. When the film started, I thought it was okay until it got to the first battle scene in Stonebridge, #1 I don't see a bridge and #2 there was only a house or 2 that was actually in stone. How awful. The bit where Statham's character slashes and 'kills' a krug, wheres the blood? How was he able to lift that ugly goblin thing? We know these characters have blood as we see Solana with some on her head, Gallain when stopping a sword smash onto his head, Duke stabs some general and wow, there's blood on the dagger but no, slashing in that universe means no blood for either the krug or the humans. Another question that popped up in my head, why where the krugs taking the humans, to be slaves? all i ever saw was them tied in chains sitting on the floor.
'In The Name Of The King'. Okay what does that mean? 90% of the film was about Statham's character, we only learnt about him being the king right before his battle with Gallain.
it's truly awful, I watched it because I thought it was interesting, hence the title name but nope, I will never again watch a movie by this awful director, WHY IS HE STILL DIRECTING?????????????????????????????????
Prisoners (2013)
How the pace ruined the film
While many people love the suspense of the film or just simply the 2 main actors, others like me did not. Though not a bad idea, film or setting i felt that the pace of the film is what bore me out. While watching the film, and as a TV student myself, found to be heavily distracted throughout the film. I felt no suspense and no love towards the film which IMDb gave a grand total of 8.1 on. I believe if the film was shorten down to 100-120 minutes (1hr 40mins - 2hrs) then maybe the film would have been more interesting and the suspense would have been felt.
All in all, it wasn't a bad film, it did catch my glimpse from time to time, but the pace is what made me and countless of other people feel really bored and distracted upon. i think this film deserves a 6, no less and no more.
