Memoirs of a Geisha (2005)
Although surface...beautiful in every way
I was pleasantly surprised coming out of "Geisha." I had heard numerous mixed reviews and was skeptical. However, what I experienced was 2 and half hours in an exotic world floating on silk. True, the film is not complex or deep, or probably very true to the life of a real geisha. But, I don't know if that's what I really wanted. I was content with Rob Marshall's musicality in his directing to create a meditative and intriguing melodrama. Oddly, the story reminded me of Chinese spoken drama, which was written around the time the movie takes place. Also, John Williams score is worth two stars alone. The actors all created compelling performances even though the characters on paper lacked depth. I recommend "Geisha", not because it's an important film...but because there is beauty in virtually every frame, everything else in the film is shadow.
Superbabies: Baby Geniuses 2 (2004)
One of those rare horrible movies...that is a must-see!
When I uttered the words, "Baby Geniuses 2" to man in the box office at the movie theaters I had a certain sense of shame and embarrassment. The only reason I went was because we had a group of about 15 film majors that thought it would be funny to all go see the late-night showing of this movie. We were right! From the second we saw the flashback to 1962 Berlin, Germany we knew this was going to be sooooo ridiculous that there wouldn't be any problem finding stuff to laugh at. The dialogue and the "concept" of this movie are so prepostorous that I contemplated dropping my major in film once it was over because I thought that if this movie could make it to the big screen, then Hollywood is truly dead. I understand, this is suppose to be a kid's movie.
Doesn't work as that even! There was actually a few young children in the theater and they were crying after about 15 min. into it. There's too many special effects and loud fight scenes to make it enjoyable for a child. Plus, even a baby can probably tell how much crap this is. One of the funniest moments was during a part where they're pulling a mini-van into the head baby's secret lair behind the Hollywood sign...I know, that's enough to be funny....but if you look in the upper left hand corner in the screen you can CLEARLY see a crew member just messing around behind a bush. That's how poor quality this is. Well, that's all I'm going to waste my time saying about this movie. If you have a group of friends who want to just laugh they're butts off for 2 hours (way toooo long), then be brave and go see Baby Geniuses 2, it'll be an experience you unfortunately will never forget.
Monsturd (2003)
Absolutley terrible piece of crap...a must see (once and only once)!
The makers of Monsturd set out to make a movie that would be so "crappy" it's funny. They even tried adding jokes in and funny bits. Oh they're funny, but just because grown people actually spent hours of their lives dedicated to this. Here's the thing, if you like horrible movies with horrible acting for the sake of laughing at it, this is one to see once and probably only once. If nothing else it'll make you feel a lot better about what you're doing with your life. Also, the more people you're watching this with the better. I'd give a grade or a star to this movie, but it's not even worthy of that. In fact, it's not even worthy of being called a movie. It's just, Monsturd...the biggest piece of crap man ever created. So yeah, go rent it.
