Julia (2022)
Sarah Lancashire IS Julia Childs
I have just finished watching Sarah in Happy Valley where she is a ballsy British police officer who couldn't be any further from Julia Childs. However don't let that put you off if you are a Happy Valley fan. This series showcases Sarah's amazing acting ability just in case anyone doubted it.
This show is heartfelt and funny, entertaining and touching. For me, it was particularly poignant to see Julia go to the doctor and realise that she is menopausal. The way it affects her and the way it makes her act are perfectly portrayed and beautifully done. Thank you to the makers for that.
A great dramatisation based on a real person should make you want to go searching for more about that person, this show does that.
The sets are great, the characters are well cast especially Julia, Paul and Avis who is just so sassy.
Watch it and love it - Bon Appetite.
Villeneuve Pironi (2022)
The Real Story
I have to admit I came to be an F1 fan after this happened. Gilles son Jacques was my first F1 passion so by default I have always been interested in the story behind Jacques.
This documentary is captivating, heartfelt & gives both sides of the sad story of both men's sadly too short lives.
There are interviews with Gilles' widow & his children, members of the Ferrari team at the time including a fabulous British lady who was the only woman & only British person in the Ferrari team. Also interviews with Didier's wife, his girlfriend and his twin sons who were born after his death. There are snippets from drivers from the period including Alain Prost.
It really is a fascinating insight into the relationship of these two great drivers.
It's an emotional rollercoaster though and brings home to you how dangerous the sport I love was and still is.
Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries (2012)
An Art Deco Gem
I am a big fan of the Art Deco period and this is quintessentially "Deco". It draws you in from the first episode with its easy to watch characters who quickly become your new best friends. Mr Butler (the butler) is one of my favourites along with Hugh the police Constable and the icing on the cake is Miriam Margolyes as Miss Fishers prim Aunt.
Each episode is a different case and coincidentally Miss Fisher seems to be friends with someone who is involved which infuriates the police inspector. This makes for a great relationship between them.
Miss Fisher is a woman of many talents, she drives, sings, plays tennis, performs in a circus as well as being an escapologist. She is a thoroughly modern woman for the period, she even wears trousers!!!
What more can I say? The show is perfectly cast, the clothes are beautiful, the buildings are stunning, the stories are thrilling and as with a lot of Australian shows there is so much tongue in cheek humour.
This is a show that you will fall in love with and watch over and over again.
Cities: Nature's New Wild (2018)
Absolutely Fascinating
I came to this half way through episode 3 and couldn't stop watching. So I've now gone back and watched them all from the start. It's one of the best wildlife programmes I've watched in years. It shows animals, birds & insects who have evolved to live in our cities all over the world. The commentary is excellent; modern & edgy.
From rats in the UK to river dolphins in the Amazon to the most beautiful bats in Australia you will be intrigued by these ingenious creatures.
It's actually very refreshing to see how so many animals have evolved to live alongside us when we see so many things about how we are ruining the world.
Watch out for the bears in Aspen who are amazingly clever and really made me laugh!
