Miami Vice: Honor Among Thieves? (1988)
Rock bottom....
I know many say "Missing Hours" was the worst episode, but at least it was entertaining in that "what the..?" type mold, like watching a slow motion train wreck - it does at least hold your attention. This episode is actually embarrassing to watch. The weaselly guy talking in the little girl doll voice? That goofy actor is just...sticky, icky, clammy and creepy. And the whole trial thing? Is this just a really bad rip off of the German film "M", is that what this is supposed to be? And lastly, how the bad guy and the drug king pin die, ludicrous can't even begin to cover it. I don't know why this was allowed to air, but when it did I remember thinking 'this show is on it's way out...' Skip this episode at ALL costs. It's worse that worst from Season 5.
Miami Vice: Child's Play (1987)
Way to go!
I just got done ripping "Honor Among Thieves?" from Season 4, so I thought I would make a positive comment to balance my negative one. This is probably Don Johnson's best piece of acting in this season, maybe the whole series. There were many truly great episodes, "El Viejo", "Shadow in the Dark", "Out Where the Buses Don't Run", "Down for the Count" "Payback", "Definitely Miami", etc. But this one does not get the same buzz, probably because it is carried by the force of the acting, not the shootouts or action scenes...in fact it is the shooting at the first that sets up the rest of the show. I know the end is a bit weak, where the gun runner dies (his fall is lame, I admit), but the strength of the episode is that it takes what Vice usually dishes out for entertainment, a shootout, turns it on it's head and makes the hero, Crockett, a bad guy for doing the right thing. I think it is one of the top 5 episodes of the whole show - give it a look.
Pastor Greg (2005)
Underdog show trying hard
I am a Christian, too, and I think if this show is taken for what it is, a goofy non-serious slapstick sitcom, it can be entertaining. Is it great? No, but it is not awful. I remember the first season of "Home Improvement" and "Seinfeld" and neither was particularly funny. It took awhile for the characters and writers to find their stride, but they did. This show will too, as I think the writing has improved immeasurably by the end of Season 1 and I expect it will be much better in Season 2. Give this show a chance, if for no other reason than how many Christian sitcoms are there out there to compare it to? I read somewhere that the lady who played Mary Ann on Gilligan's Island, Dawn Wells, has joined the cast. I think adding a wonderful character actress like her is a great catch for a smaller budgeted series, and her presence will no doubt have an impact on all the talent on the show. Her experience alone in sitcoms will have a rising tide effect. Again, give this show a chance - it may be your last one to see a true Christian sitcom. (BTW, I do NOT work on this show or know anyone on the show. It is just an opinion.)
